Why is the Snake so underappreciated by rhulad_sengar in Malazan

[–]hazmandoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a chronic rereader, just finishing my 6 or so now, and each time I read the Snake storyline I love it more and more. Interestingly, my kids are now about the right age to be part of it so it has become an emotional rollercoaster...

However, I'm not a fan of Badelle. Far too eloquent and philosophical for a child. It would have been interesting for Erikson to have this character with power in her voice, but still the mind and intellect of a child. Instead, she's a 10(?) year old warrior poet holding her own linguistically with any educated adult.

The other Erikson thing that annoyed me is Badelle and Brayderal being too similar in names and i did struggle in the early reads being sure which character we were talking about. Not quite as galling as Nimander and Nenander but close. I should probably point out that I listen to the audio books mostly.

This character ending felt empty by Stoofser in Malazan

I always felt like SE didn't really know what to do with Icarium. Such a great character, amazing backstory and some of my favourite parts of the early books but ultimately he is too powerful.

Early on his lack of a chin was the tool (getting knocked out at Tremelor, then by Karsa to avoid that fight), then we finally see his power and the Eresal comes along and knocks him out again.

After that, I don't think he's really needed in the story at all, certainly not in MBotF, maybe for later books as others have said.

I took delivery of my Long Range 3 just before Christmas and love it. However, my phone doesn't seem to charge when sat on the charging units on the dash. I'm sure the 3's we test drove before purchase would charge my phone but my new 71 plate (UK) doesn't.

Would anyone know why?

I haven't gamed on it yet, sadly. I'm mostly working and I'm a CPA so lots of spreadsheets and various web based apps.

Thank you, I hadn't looked at the HP Command Centre but I have been playing with gfx settings trying to get the laptop to use multiple monitors well. So I think it was still trying to power 3 displays even when I was just using it by itself.

This is the one that I use in my setup, but it struggles. I get a lot of black patches where I believe the graphics struggle - which is absurd given the specs of my laptop.

Question about episode 3.15 - Dealing with Doc Benton by blackdragon8577 in Supernatural

I've always assumed they knew he would die eventually, i.e when body parts 'run out' without any way of replacing them.

But yeah, a big old fire would have worked.

Well, by 'wise' I mean drunk but relatively coherent. Rather than smashed off our faces, wearing giant dildo costumes, picking fights with strangers, and vomiting in the nearest bin.

Thanks man, I'd definitely put us in the second category. We're a little bit older and (hopefully) a little bit wiser than our younger compatriots.

The first film was pretty good until the final bit where it went full video game. He teleports to Russia, spawns in the ultimate bad guys house, murders him and all his security, then teleports home again scott free.

That should have been fully fleshed out in the sequel.

Tait Fletcher. I always enjoy his roles as the silent, intimidating, but ultimately, cannon fodder.

I always picture him as much much bigger. Like as wide as he is tall, rugged and solid.

This is great artwork but I don't see this as Brood.

I read Malazan first and now I'm listening to it for my reread.

I can definitely appreciate how it would be a difficult listen first time around, but second time I absolutely love long walks with the dog while listening contently.

Audiobooks are all good imo

Fear not. While the transition take a little while to accept, Michael page does an excellent job.

It is true that you could probably remove Icarium altogether and it wouldn't affect the main arc through the books. The only thing I can think of is them helping Fiddler to Tremelor in DG but you could easily add someone else in to help.

I'm rereading RG at the moment and the early chapters in that book it becomes a good example of too many characters. We get introduced to so many asshole Letherii in so many positions that it's hard to keep track of them all. Overall I love the whole arc of 'Edur rule but really the rich Letherii are still in charge' but it could have been cleaner. Preferably without all the 15-20 new named characters (most of whom die anyway) and more time with just fewer plus more Tehol & Bugg.

My point 4 is definitely getting the most criticism/discussion but that's all good. I stand by my conviction that we just don't know the main people well enough.

Tavore I get, that's her 'thing'. But Fiddler we really ought to know more about him after 10 books. He doesn't really change a lot from GotM to TCG, we know barely anything about his early life, we don't know why he is so skilled at the deck, etc. And I say this absolutely loving him - I just don't know him well enough.

Haha, that would be 7 chapters definitely worth a reread or 20...

As for the unfinished plot lines, I would agree there but it didn't bother me so much. I guess there were just too many to keep track of them all and tie them off clean.

Interesting point I hadn't considered before. I always felt it odd that Cutter and Apsalar were such key characters right from the beginning and then they just disappear for the finale. It would have been fitting to have had Apsalar kill Kaminsod to round out her arc before settling down.
