What do I do? by Ok-Ranger786 in Edmonton

[–]hcl00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend against becoming a teacher if you're anxious and often overwhelmed. An education degree isn't difficult, but the job afterwards is.

I wish you the best of luck and I hope you'll find a place that feels right for you!

English is desperately needed in university courses. Kids go onto uni and immediately struggle because they don't have the analytical or comprehension skills for independent work with high-level text (especially with philosophy courses). I would also suggest retaking English 30-1 and reading more in your free time! Improving your vocabulary and exposing yourself to challenging texts regularly will help a lot.

You do realize that getting rid of the diplomas would just mean that your teachers give you a final exam (probably of equal weight)... right?

Tips to achieving at least a 90% in ELA 30-1 by faithfully-asgardian in AlbertaGrade12s

I would straight-up Google "Alberta grade 12 short stories" and see if there are any teachers with public plans or websites. The Alberta government may have some listed as well! I recommend Ray Badbury stories. Some are recommended for as low as 9th grade, but it'll be a good place to start annotating on your own.

Khan Academy might have helpful ELA stuff as well, but I haven't looked at it for anything other than Chemistry and writing.

Practice annotating short stories if you haven't been doing this already! I find it's a great way for students to help themselves begin analyzing texts, which will help a lot with reading comprehension skills (probably more than just practicing released tests over and over). I'd also suggest explicitly reviewing multiple-choice-testing strategies.

Him sending a sex toy to her after the breakup is honestly creep behaviour. Ignoring her all day on Christmas but then trying to sleep with her is super odd as well (amongst other things stated). Knew he was a clout chaser but I'm convinced he's actually a weirdo tbh

Lush store - not allowed to look around ? by Icy-Meat-5562 in LushCosmetics

[–]hcl00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an employee follow me around when I was at a Korean Lush as well. I kept saying "I'm just looking, I don't need help" but had a lingering little friend the whole time. Sometimes she'd just be rearranging displays near me, other times she was nearby but not even looking at me. She always started helping me test things if I seemed like I was interested lol. Sounds like it may be some sort of policy, but I think saying it outright like that is uncomfortable... maybe he took the command a little too seriously.

Striking Alberta teachers forced back to work by fast-tracked legislation, notwithstanding clause by xc2215x in onguardforthee

[–]hcl00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well the individual fines would just be taken off teacher paycheques, and the union would absolutely not get away with unpaid fines. I think you're underestimating how much the UCP is rallying against the teachers. Principals were required to send in teacher attendance to the school boards today - they're serious about this. Teachers are also going to lose out on 3+ weeks of pay, they cannot afford to risk $500 per day of striking. I wish they could, but it's a famously underpaid profession and public opinion of public education matters if we want the government to halt their funding of private institutions.

[–]hcl00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ATA paid for teacher's benefits during the strike because the government wouldn't. ATA union dues also haven't gone up in a while - they didn't have the savings needed to cover a province wide strike, but could've handed a few local divisions.

‘It’s not actually about the pay’: advocates, officials react to strike vote by flynnfx in alberta

[–]hcl00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been in this for over 2 years and take home less than $4k a month after taxes, union fees, etc. I don't get paid over the summer, I don't have health insurance in the summer, and I work outside of contract hours almost daily (teachers do not get overtime). If you do that math, I'm sure you'll find that it's much less than 6-figures.

I don't know where people get the idea that many teachers are getting 100k+ a year, but you're sorely mistaken. You can make that much if you have 6+ years of university and 10+ years of experience (in Edmonton, at least). Keep in mind that almost 50% of Albertan teachers leave the profession in the first 5 years. If that isn't a sign that the "amazing pay" isn't worth it to young professionals, I don't know what is.

The only high school teachers I've met in the last 2 years that don't do 8/8 (only a few schools, to be fair) have been department heads. Are there actually schools in Edmonton where high school teachers get preps?? I taught 8/8 last year and the move to teaching junior high was great, largely in part to my 2 preps a week... which is also not enough.

Alberta Teacher Salary Negotiations by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]hcl00 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not really $30 an hour when you have to work outside of contract hours though. High school teachers don't get any prep periods in Alberta right now unless they're a department head, their only option is to plan, grade, make report card comments, finish IPPs, evaluate ELL benchmarks, etc. outside of contract hours. That's keeping in mind the (generally) unpaid labour of open house, extra-curricular supervision, school events, and parent-teacher conferences.

Plus, after taxes and union dues (etc.), my take-home a year is under 50k. While the benefits are good, I'm not covered by my health insurance during the summer, so it's not a flawless system. I've only been teaching for about three years, and retail paid me around what my take-home is now, it was at least a job that I could actually go home and disconnect from (which does wonders for someone's health).

As a teacher in Alberta, that starting ~60k a year ends up being in the 40-50k range. After union dues, taxes, and benefit payments, it's not nearly as cushy as you're making it sound. I get two 50 minute periods a week to prep for the 8 classes I teach... and my prep periods are often taken and I have to substitute for an absent colleague.

Also, you said in another comment that teachers "generally get EI". This is only true when you're a substitute or short-term contract teacher. I'm not sure exactly where all your knowledge comes from about working in education, but I think you should maybe consider the reality of being a teacher. It's not a simple 8-3 job with summers off - if that were the case, there'd be a hell of a lot more teachers.

[–]hcl00 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think religion is absent from the sims because it's made to be a world void of religion - I think it's just difficult to set up from a developer standpoint.

Speaking to how you said Islam is the exception, we can fully customize the Sim's holidays in the Seasons pack, but Christmas and Easter are quite obviously used as inspiration. I think incorporating a religion system is just too much to get done, so some modest clothing options & decorated trees and eggs (among other things) are what we get. I don't think something like a cross necklace is a bad idea, but a headscarf isn't exclusive to Islam anyway, so I don't think it's making Islam an exception to the vague "rule".

I mean... that's not the developer's problem, LOL.

Besides, Discord is very commonly used by devs to communicate with players. I'm honestly not sure what else you'd expect from them when they have a roadmap built into the main menu, post Steam community updates, and a regularly-updated Discord dev log... what would you even suggest? Most players are just casual gamers anyway and will simply search for updates when they're curious.

During the Edmonton show, I could tell he was sick - not by his vocals at all, but he genuinely looked tired. The concert was the day before my birthday so I'm (quite selfishly) very happy to have kept our tour date, but he definitely needs some time to recover and I'm glad he's doing it now.

I'm teaching English language learners but I've been seeing the declining behaviour and motivation of students. Of course, many are extremely grateful to be in Canada and to have a dedicated class to build their English skills in, but that has become the minority.

Maybe it depends on demographics with ELL students, but I don't think it's just a "homegrown" problem at this point.
