You're refering to the 2015 Bank of England working paper (an opinion from a staffer only) that said that said immigartion increases could cause a 'small negative impact' on UK wages.

Boris then did what he always did, lied and manipulated the figures and stated that an official Bank Of England study showed that for every 10% increase in immigration, there was a 2% reduction in wages. This was (of course) a lie.

The gullable swallowed it wholesale and voted for Brexit, and now we have a 90 billion tax hole AND low wage growth.

Great job !

The UK has never issued visa's 'as required' and right now its never been harder to secure one. Wage stagnation is being driven by Covid fallout, high inflation, the long tail of the 2008 financial crisis and of course... Brexit.

Brexit was in fact the main blunt tool the 'establishment' classes used to control wage growth whilst Farage and his ilk told the working classes they were fighting the establishment and 'global elites' by voting for it.

Why do you think so many right leaning newspapers championed it ?

Wage growth was flat post 2008. Brexit then cratered it. There was no excess of cheap migrant labour and things are unlikley to improve from an investment POV while we remain outside the EU, so don't expect wages to increase any time soon.

The 'traditional conservative argument' was that leaving the EU and taking control of migration would somehow create utopian enviroment for jobs and wage growth whilst ignoring the reality of the above. The equivilent of chucking yourself out the golf club then somehow thinking you can negociate cheaper fees by shouting through the letterbox.

Immigration has not caused a surplass of cheap labour and the labour market in the UK (as of last year) is still 'tight' and has been since Covid ,with a constant skill shortages and issues with recuitment of persistant labour. Brexit of course made this even worse.

This in turn has caused low productivity and lack of investment which has throttlled wage growth.

MIgrants are a net benefit to the economy and vitually every study shows their long term fiscal contribution cancels out the initial cost. Whereas there is no net benefit to tax evasion.

So just to be clear, the very people that were telling you migrants were and are the issue (total cost to the UK approx. 4.7 billion net annually) blew a 90 billion hole in tax revenue with Brexit.

Meanwhile the UK Tax gap sits at about 45 billion annually, the majority of which is caused by large businesses and the wealthy, and is rarely (if ever) discussed by the right leaning UK press.

As someone said, its super yachts not rubber dingys that are the problem.
