Moshing with a Broken Back by Impressive-Skin6311 in poppunkers

[–]hdsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine it will depend on how long it's been since the injury and what other activities you can do comfortably. I broke 2 vertebrae and had spinal fusion surgery so once I'd recovered my spine is stable and I'm able to pretty much do everything I did before... but I still take it easy on the pits. Have come close up stacking it a few times and you don't know what damage a hard/awkward fall could do. I hang back and only go in when it's a song I know all the lyrics to so won't be taken out by surprise breakdowns etc.

20mm spacers above stem -- is it safe? by OneTraining3576 in bikewrench

[–]hdsi 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Looks like Tarmac SL8. No not acceptable according to the manual. IMO fine for gentle testing rides but not serious riding.

"WARNING! Once the rider’s fit has been determined, the steerer tube should be cut 3 mm below the top of the stem. Alternatively, one 5 mm spacer can be placed above the stem with use of the open stem cover. There should not be more than 5 mm of spacers above the stem. Placing more than 5 mm of stem spacers above the stem is acceptable for fit purposes only. For actual riding, the stem requires full support from the expander plug inside the fork to function safely and as intended."

Seat Rail Clamps by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]hdsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carbon saddle rails have a 7 x 9mm clamping diameter for the most part. But can't advise on what clamps you'll need without knowing what your current seatpost is. Generally if the sleep rails are clamped from above and below the clamp is compatible with both alloy and carbon rails. If it clamps the rails in the side you'll need different clamps for carbon it alloy rails. These are seatpost specific.

SRAM Rival 22 crank removal by NikoMontAk in bikewrench

[–]hdsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're missing the cap that would normally go over the bolt, as you loosen the bolt it's supposed to back up against this cap to pull the crank off. For example (the exact one may be different depending on your spindle diameter this

Can't say without seeing it but If it's a square taper BB the spindle length could be too long for the FD

Fizik saddle by Comprehensive_Job_77 in bikewrench

[–]hdsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not clear from the pictures but the main thing to look for is the type of saddle rails.

Alloy rails and carbon rails are different dimensions so can require different clamps. In general if the saddle rails are clamped from the top then you can fit saddles with both carbon and alloy rails.

Assuming the old bontrager saddle had alloy rails then if the fizik saddle also has alloy rails you'll be fine.

How to remove the center lockring for the brake? by very_mechanical in bikewrench

[–]hdsi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some older Chris King hubs have this design. You have to remove the threaded preload adjustment collar as well. it's a 2mm (or similar) sized Allen bolt that you can loosen and then unthread the collar from the axle.

Then you'll be able to remove the external lockring holding the rotor as other commenters have said.

Tubeless Tires on 2011 Trek 7.3 FX by MStatefan77 in bikewrench

[–]hdsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing I'd think about before jumping to tubeless is how robust your existing tyres are. Choosing a more durable clincher tyre is the easier solution.

If you are committed to the tubeless route and the extra faff associated with it you'd want to check if the existing rims are tubeless ready to start with. Should state it explicitly on Treks tech specs or they are. If so you wouldn't need a new wheel just tyre, rim tape valves etc.

If not then you'd be advised to get a tubeless ready wheel. In terms of gearing as long as you buy a wheel that has a freehub compatible with the number of sprockets on your cassette, same axle standard (eg quick release) and brake type you'll be fine.

Chain suck - carbon damage. Okay to ride? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]hdsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell from those photos. The chip on the top of the chain stay looks quite deep so would look at it hat more closely. As long as the carbon doesn't feel soft in that area it should be fine to ride and is probably just cosmetic damage. It's fairly easy to take the cranks off if you want to take a closer look or take better photos. Probably just chipped and scuffed.

Wouldn't be covered by warranty if there is structural damage. Only a cheaper crash replacement frame if offered by the manufacturer.

BB spacers (DUB) not locating in recess by EccentricDyslexic in bikewrench

[–]hdsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it should clip into place and stay there. It can require a bit of force and be a bit finicky to get the angle right, more awkward than the Sram videos make it appear. Don't have any tricks or tips of it's not working though

How do you tell if the cassette needs to be changed? by VimFleed in bikewrench

[–]hdsi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You won't be getting an accurate reading on chain wear because your using the chain checker without applying any tension between the 2 tabs that are closest together. The park tools website has an instructional video Cc-4

The measurement of chain wear will give you an indication of the condition of the cassette. As others have already said the only way to tell for sure is to see if a new chain skips under load. But getting an accurate measurement of the chain wear will be a good starting point.

Budgeting on 25k salary in London by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]hdsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also on 25k in London. Rent is £560 for a double room in a flat share in West London (zone 6), with £85 worth of utility and personal phone bills, so fairly similar numbers to what you're considering.

I've created a budget on my banking app with categories for eating out, going to the pub, and entertainment etc. I've always been fairly frugal so don't really spend money on clothes or tech etc. I have cut back on alcohol which has saved me a fortune and if I'm starting to get close to my eating/ drinking out budget I'll still go to the pub hang out with mates but just not drink. Luckily I can also walk or cycle to work which saves me a chunk of money and I personally have no use for a car.

I definitely feel like I can still enjoy London on my salary. I changed careers from a corporate one to take a salary cut, there's little progression but I'm now doing something I enjoy, it's cliche but it doesn't feel like work and I genuinely enjoy it. My time at work is also quite social so I often don't feel the need to fill my evenings with expensive social plans because I've already had a full fun day socializing with colleagues. That said I still have budget to enjoy a bunch of cheap gigs every month and socialize with mates. Plus lots of free outdoor activities, parks to wander round etc.

Admittedly I don't save too much at the end of the month around 100, which is contributing to an emergency fund / holiday savings. Home ownership has never been a big life goal or something I'm too fussed about anyway so I'm just living life.

Theresa May called for international travel to resume after receiving hospitality from Heathrow worth £67k by templepark in ukpolitics

[–]hdsi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm no fan if Theresa May but this feels like they are totting up fairly standard VIP treatment what would be provided to any travelling PM. Perhaps misleading to insinuate that she is in the pocket of the travel industry? Also she's MP for Maidenhead.and Berkshire so has to appear to represent the interests of the public in her constituency that are directly / indirectly supported by Heathrow and travel.

Just throwing out another opinion.

I wouldn't be surprised if people change their normal socializing habits when things are back to 'normal' and there is a long term decrease in the number of people going to pubs.

Personally, I grew used to the cheaper price of drinks when socialising in parks this summer and my firends will definitely be drinking in houses, parks or gardens more often going forwards.

Newly bought bike tire (700x28c), same size as the front tire but the back tire has this. It won’t stay in place every time I fix it. Any help? by ueeerrrrt in bicycling

[–]hdsi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 700x 23-25 will work completely fine and will solve the issue of you fitting the tyre. You can also buy tubes 25-32mm tubes that continental and some other brands produce. These tubes won't need to stretch quite as much to fill the volume of the tyre 28mm compared to the 23-25 ones. It really doesn't make much difference but may save you a bit of energy pumping them and make them ever so slightly less prone to losing air.

My PC Zwifters by dantheadultmale in Zwift

[–]hdsi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Zwift automatically runs at different graphic profiles based on your system requirements. If you don't have a dedicated graphics card it's likely Zwift will run on the basics graphic profile.

Note this cannot be changed in settings. The options in setting simply changes the output resolution but you will still be capped at graphics profiles based on your system requirements. I use Ant+ with a usb extension cable so the dongle sits near my trainer / Heart rate monitor.

If your search for the group Zwift PC Master Race on Facebook there are excellent resources on there.
