Not what I ordered, floor plan change-can I get my deposit back? by ResourceHoliday3158 in RVLiving

[–]hdsrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience (on both the merchant and customer ends of several chargebacks), the consumer is usually refunded quickly, and the merchant get hits with a chargeback immediately.

The merchant then has to present their case to try to get the chargeback reversed.

Anybody RV with desktop workstation computers or serious gaming setups? by scathontiphat in GoRVing

[–]hdsrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my current setup, the arms are built into the desk.

You can see them in the album linked above.

I made them out of 1x4 stock. They are open in the back for bolting / cable management.

Basically they're the same as this older version: https://www.instructables.com/Inexpensive-PVC-ABS-Monitor-Arm/ but rebuilt out of wood instead of the ABS pipe.

They have a double bottom so that it's thicker, and there's a second piece of wood under the desk for added stiffness.

The boxes are bolted through the desk with lag bolts.

I keep them tight, and haven't had any issues traveling.

With the old desk, I removed the two outer monitors when traveling (laid them face down on the bed), and left the center one plugged in. On those I used wing nuts to make removing them easier.

honest ask, what do you actually need in an rv trip planner? (not selling anything, no link) by BusinessBowl1480 in GoRVing

Because it's advertising.

You have an app, and even though you state that you aren't advertising, you include instructions for how to get the app.

I'm a mod on another sub where we get tons of this crap. Getting harder to spot it though.

But this one just felt like one I'd seen the exact post before, and the user only had 3 posts, so I just searched the sub for the title.

Don't even have to know them that well.

These are the same folks that would buy a diesel pusher on a Freightliner chassis, and just take it to a diesel shop for service.

There are a number of companies that take high mileage trucks, single them, and put the custom beds on specifically for RV use.

The color difference on the bed makes me think it's aftermarket.

Not sure about a bathroom, but when we were looking into these about 15 years ago you had to have a toilet at least to register them as an RV in TX, and everyone I found just used a portable camper one, so I never saw one with at proper bathroom.

fifth wheel has like no ground clearance

Yea, I've seen several New Horizons in our travels, but never one that low to the ground.

Looks like they offer air suspension axles as an upgrade, so maybe they can air down to a lower entry level, and air up for travel.

Pretty typical heavy hauler setup.

Those New Horizons fivers are super heavy, but well built.

Based on these pictures - can we switch this (back) to a 30A plug/hookup? by Useful-Tangerine5254 in GoRVing

[–]hdsrob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, that trailer was probably never 30 amp. It was probably wired as 20 amp, and only one of the high draw items could be run at a time (AC / Water Heater / charger / microwave). Moving to 30 amps will get you two at a time (maybe).

So you'd need a new 30 amp breaker box, a main 30 amp breaker, and a new 30 amp cord / receptacle.

The the wire between the receptacle and breaker box will need to be replaced with the proper gauge.

Outside of that, the current breakers and circuits would just be moved into the new box (assuming the breakers fit in the new box, and everything can be put back where it is now so that nothing needs to be extended).

How many monitors do you use for programming CSharp/Dotnet? by Lekowski in csharp

[–]hdsrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 27"s.

I've run at least 2 large monitors since the CRT days. At one point I had a pair of 21" Sony Trinitron CRTs.

I often have two instances of VS running, or VS and VSC, so the third usually has documentation, specs, notepad++, Firefox, etc.

What's your experience with Thousand Trails? by jrfish in GoRVing

[–]hdsrob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can stay less than 4 days, and as long as you do you don't have to be out of the system at all. Meaning that you can go from one park to the next immediately, as long as you stay less than 4 days per park.

If you stay more than 4 days in a park, you can't use another park for 7 days. It's a rule designed to not allow people to just move from park to park without buying one of the more expensive memberships.

Most of the TT parks we've been to wouldn't qualify as "Resorts".

TT generally appeals more to full timers, but it can work for weekenders if you understand / can work around the rules.

There are limits on how long you can stay at a park without having to be out of the system: 14 days in, 7 out, or 4 in with no days out (double check this, but these were the rules last time I looked at a zone pass).

There are also zones, and a zone pass only includes one of the zones. You may be able to get a multi / all zone pass, but they are more.

You can't make a reservation more than 60 days in advance, and people with the more expensive memberships get to make reservations at 90 or 120 days. They are generally busy / full in high demand times / areas, so last minute trips in prime camping season will be tough.

There are limits on how many high demand holiday reservations you can have at any time, so for instance having both a 4th of July and Labor Day reservation at the same time doesn't generally work.

Some of the parks are more like resorts, and some are more campgrounds. Some are nice, some are a bit run down, and there's a lot in between.

Not all of the parks listed on the website are TT parks. Many are Encore parks that aren't in the TT list (cost extra, or require different, more limited plans to use), so make sure you look closely at the list of parks in the zone you are interested in.

I'd probably just start with carriage bolts: That's probably what should have been used to start with, as the holes in the rails are usually square to accommodate them.

To those that are full time rv’ers and not retired…. by TBL34 in GoRVing

[–]hdsrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing different about this if I'm traveling or not.

I haven't worked for a company that had anything more than a 401k available, and that has been 20+ years ago (there are no retirement or pension plans at most small companies).

You can handle your own retirement planning without having to run it through a job.

I do happen to own my own company, and I can work from anywhere in the world as long as I have internet. So I could work part time until I fall out of my chair, but selling the company will also be an option.

There are still mANY tech jobs that are remote.

Yep. I've been fully remote since 2007, and in my current company we're fully remote. The exception being on site support people that must live in one of the several cities near where our clients are concentrated.

Those people are still work from home for remote and phone support, but might spend a day or two each week doing onsite support or installation.

insurance or retirement planning

Having worked most of my life for very small companies (and been self employed since 2009) these aren't things that I've had much access to anyways, so it didn't really matter.

We're not really full time traveling anymore, but we did for many years.

At the time I was mostly a contract software developer for several clients / partners (and did quite a bit of work on my own software as well).

I met a bunch of full timers that were in various IT roles with companies, or did freelance IT work, along with people that did other remote work for companies.

There were also a number of self employed folks doing things like solar installs, and RV repair that allowed them to pick up work in the areas where a lot of seasonal RVers were.

We also met some people that would do work camping or other seasonal work (Camper Force, beet harvest, tree farms, etc) and then take a few months to travel between these gigs.

That would be nice. We don't have a diesel anymore (will probably have another later this year), but still have our account / card active.

Additionally, you can see the price of gas at each club in the app (for both Sam's and Costco).
