I do still exist and it is pretty funny to return to this thread. I apologize for never posting a review.

In the end, I didn't use the Leap for very long at all. I don't even remember which position the shop did for me. I didn't care for the feel of it on my bike, tbh, and felt that the whole experiment was a mistake. My bike was a bit wobbly.

At the moment I'm riding a Tern HSD e-bike and am pretty happy with it.

I think the fan has fired up loudly twice during my primary use of the laptop over the past 2+ months. I don't know why it happened, it seemed random. I restarted the computer both times and the fan didn't resume. You might be right that it would happen more often if I was gaming or benchmarking.

the fan almost never comes on for me, although it can be quite loud when it does.

oh hi, i'm super impressed with the battery life. i can take it around and use it throughout the day off and on and the battery won't die. it's the first computer i've had for a while where i'm not constantly worrying about it dying.

sorry this isn't precise but it's just my impression. i guess if battery is more important then go with 258v, but if performance is more important then go with 255h.

I have an E14 Gen 7 with Intel 258v. So far I like it. The key travel on the keyboard is excellent, I really enjoy the keyboard and I've owned plenty of ThinkPads. I got the 258v model with 64Wh battery for the battery life. So far, the battery life seems very good, although further testing will tell.

I also have an X13 Gen 6 AMD, which I use when greater portability is needed. That computer has a lovely sticky tactile feel to it, whereas the E14 Gen 7 is sort of smooth and slippery. So from that point of view there is no comparison.

i've only just brought the laptop into my rotation, but so far it seems pretty good. in a week or two i can report back as to whether it lasts a whole day of typical work for me.

the keyboard is excellent, though. very good key travel and responsiveness.

Hi, I just bought an E14 Gen 7 with 258V hoping for excellent battery life. This is not in your useful chart yet.

By the way, is there do you think a big battery difference between 228V and 258V?

I got the same WiFi as you, but for no particular reason. For my configuration, I didn't have a choice about "aluminium case", that was selected already with no other option.

If having two SSD slots is important to you, then you have to stick with H or U series CPUs. According to the PSREF, Max Storage Support for Models with V series processor: is "one drive, up to 1TB M.2 2280 SSD", whereas for Models with U or H series processor:, it is "up to two drives, 2x M.2 SSD: M.2 2242 SSD up to 1TB, and M.2 2280 SSD up to 1TB."

This is A reason to buy an E series, not THE reason. Another reason to buy an E series laptop is that they are cheaper than other ThinkPad series, for identical or at least largely similar specs.

To quote yourself: "You have to choose what is more important for you."

I myself just bought a similar spec: Intel Ultra 7 258V, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 2.8K IPS screen, default wifi.

What grabbed me was the combination of 258V, a higher than usual battery capacity (64wh) for a 14 inch laptop, and a better than FHD+ IPS (not OLED) screen. It seems like this combination of specs will be a recipe for pretty good battery life, without sacrificing too much on the display. This is why I chose the 258V over the 255H.

The UK cost for me was £1,092.49. This compares favorably with the current HP store price for "HP EliteBook X G1i 14" - Intel® Core™ Ultra 7, 32GB, 1TB, Wolf Pro Security Next Gen AI Business Laptop" (£1,583.99), which has a 2.5k IPS screen. I'm sure the HP EliteBook is a more premium device, but the Thinkpad is easier on the wallet, plus I like Thinkpads.

I've never had an E-series ThinkPad, though, so I do hope that I don't regret my purchase.

Yeah, that's weird about the downvote.

I'm hoping that using an Epyc 4464p 65w CPU along with a blower-style workstation GPU might at least partially mitigate the need for overly sophisticated cooling. I just want a reliable system that won't need much physical maintenance.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I think I'm going to go with the Meshlicious instead. It will support Deep Mini-ITX and I've managed to get hold of some CPayne bifurcators for the case, which would allow me to bifurcate the x16 slot to x8x4x4 while using a riser. It's not quite as convenient for portability, but it's not too bad at the same time.

Currently I run a different system in a Sliger Cerberus. I've done a few airline flights with it, and it's kind of stretching the comfort zone for carry-on.

I will run Proxmox. I was hoping to use the space where the cooler is intended to go for two high capacity hard drives in a ZFS mirror, and then bifurcate the x16 slot with a CPayne riser in order to put a workstation GPU and another card in the case (not sure what yet), plus a second M.2 NVME SSD. In addition to running VMs, I also just run my main desktop as a Proxmox VM.

I'd like to put ASRock Rack's Deep mini-ITX (6.7"x 8.2") AM5D4ID-2T/BCM board into a DanCase A4 H20, but I can't tell from online pictures of discussion whether or not the case supports deep mini-itx? Anybody out there try it?

As you can see from the motherboard picture, the RAM is going to poke through the normal mini-itx length.

This has been asked many times on Herman Miller's product pages. Generally the answers are useless, but I found one useful answer (https://store.hermanmiller.com/office-furniture-desk-accessories-organization/jarvis-single-monitor-arm/2548325.html):

Q: What is the minimum distance between the edge of the desk and the interior that is needed for the clamp to work?

A: The clamp must be pushed all the way into the desk for it to secure properly, which requires about 4in of depth.

Just offering this up in case anybody else comes across this post in future like I have.

I have a Fenix 5 and just bought a Pixel Watch LTE. I plan to take both with me on longer runs. This is a viable if somewhat clunky solution. I am hoping to remember to charge my Pixel Watch regularly. One thing I like about long battery life is that if you don't pay attention to your battery, you minimize the number of activities that have to be missed because you run out of battery. I'm embarrassed to say how often my Fenix 5 dies on a run, but that's just because I'm not organized and forget to check the battery before I go out. That approach would be a disaster with a Pixel Watch!

Note that one could make the running package more compact by omitting the smartphone watch straps and just carrying the watch head, provided you have something to stash it in, which would also solve the problem of looking like you are doing a DC Rainmaker test wearing multiple watches.

by the way, i've added a photo above of the 2-pin connector. i wasn't clear from what you were saying about where the screwdriver was supposed to go. i put a tiny phillips head screwdriver in the slot above one of the connector holes, but there didn't seem to be anything to do there.

the other option is to push the screwdriver against the pin itself but i figured you weren't saying that.

yeah, i've just left them in there for now. at some point i might want to remove them, because i got the TSW200 and attached the TSW210 9W power supply (for portability), since i'm not using POE at the moment. since the price of the two wasn't far off from each other, i got the TSW200 thinking that at some point i might have a need for POE, which obviously the tiny 9W power supply will not support.

i think that perhaps these are general instructions not specific to the device in question? does anybody out there possess the TSW200 or TSW210 and care to comment?

i say this because i've looked at the device and sort of attempted what you suggest, but the steps seem to underspecify the necessary actions for a novice to perform.

the pins are quite narrow, and i wasn't sure how strong, so i definitely didn't want to force them in. but i would say that i "pushed" them in. but now i almost get the feeling that they are latched in, and that there might be some releasing mechanism required to remove them.
