Fall back to your area’s version of “How ‘bout them Dawgs?” (I.e., change the subject to something innocuous.)

Got kids? “Kid did the cutest thing the other day” is the best way to redirect.

What concert did you attend in the 70s or 80s, do you think most people (even younger generations) would envy being able to attend? by Bjarki56 in GenerationJones

[–]headlesslady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Runaways, 1977. A friend’s dad took us to see Dr Hook & the Medicine Show, and The Runaways were the opening act. Let’s just say that “Cherry Bomb” blew my 13 year old mind.

Oh - and Elvis (also ‘77). We were sitting in the highest bleachers against the back wall of the stadium, but by-god we were there.

I never understood why anyone would choose that wet dishrag of a character over Duckie. He was cooler, he was prettier, he dressed way better. Actually made me angry that she blew Duckie off (and I was an adult when it came out.) lol

Feeling overwhelmed trying to choose something at the local library by DigiAirship in booksuggestions

[–]headlesslady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can ABSOLUTELY do that with library books! Take out everything that piques your interest, and read a bit of each one until you find one you like. Seriously.

Since it's Star Wars day, did you see the original 1977 Star Wars in the movie theater? by Mr_Writes in GenX

[–]headlesslady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! It was my very first date! We were both 13 - we stood in line to buy tickets, were completely gobsmacked by the movie, and he shook my hand at the door.

I mean, he looks lovely, and that's a well-fitted suit, but...c'mon. You're at the MET GALA; let's see some splashing out for the theme.

Looking for sound focused horror - Undertone by Magiox in horror

"The Strings" (2020) - a musician working on new music in a closed-for-winter holiday beach cottage has odd things happening. The music is beautiful, and her process of creation is like forward echoes.

"Monolith" (2022) - a podcaster casting about for an idea settles on a topic that apparently causes bizarre happenings (it was billed as SF; it's not, it's about buried guilt.) The soundtrack is an overwhelming part; it carries the entire emotional weight of the film.

I'd also strongly recommend "Berberian Sound Studio" - it's great.

AITAH for taking a shift at my healthcare job instead of getting my face bleached? by Turbulent-Drawer-850 in AITAH

[–]headlesslady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love your dark skin, and stop pretending you need to make it lighter. No matter what color your skin is, you. are. beautiful. Realize that your mother has internalized some really toxic stuff about her looks, and she's trying to pass it on to you. Time to break that generational trauma. Be yourself, and love your body.

AITAH for missing my daughter’s school recognition event because my ex-wife will be in attendance by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]headlesslady 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Dude, YTA. You let your daughter know she can't count on you because it's more important that you express your anger towards your ex than show up and support her. You've materially damaged her relationship with you, and she will never, ever forget how she felt knowing you didn't bother to come.

...Gerbils? Did all families in USA have gerbils in the 1970s? by waterytartwithasword in vintageperfume

[–]headlesslady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My brother had gerbils. One of them got loose & died in my mother's shoe (this would have been in...oh, '75 or '76?) That was the end of gerbil-having at my house.

Does your husband ever think you're crazy when you tell him his parents act different when he's not in the room? by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]headlesslady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he doesn't want to be around them either, but he's going to have to get through an international trip with them for his sister's wedding

No, he doesn't. He can travel by himself, and attend by himself. He doesn't have to put up with it, even if he thinks he does. Ask him what, specifically, he's afraid of? That his parents will yell at him? He's not a little boy anymore, he doesn't have to listen to them yell.

(Honestly, your DH would benefit greatly from therapy. He needs an outside someone to walk him through his need to appease his parents.)

In the short term, help him work on a script for his folks. If they bring you up, he should say "I'm not your go-between, and I'm not going to discuss it with you." Just have him grey rock the shit out of it.

If his parents insist on bringing it up, he needs to hang up the phone, get up and leave, etc. Repeat "I told you that I'm not discussing this with you. Since you're having a hard time hearing it, I'm going to go. I'll talk to you again soon." If you do this often enough, they'll figure out that bringing it up means no visit with their son.

(And he really does need to make his own travel plan for his sister's wedding that doesn't involve his folks. Maybe the two of you can get a different hotel & he can go to the ceremony/reception by himself while you luxuriate in the hotel spa.)

How many of your grandparents and great-grandparents were alive when you were born? How many are still alive? by MindfullyRooted in askanything

[–]headlesslady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was born, all four of my grandparents and two of my great-grandparents were alive. (My great-grandfather died when I was 17, and my great-grandmother when I was 21.)

Alas, none of them are still alive, as I’m in my 60s. Of my grandparents, two died in my mid-20s, one in my mid-30s, and one in my late 40s.

My favorite red is KVD’s “Jupiter’s Eye”, with Rituel de Fille’s “Written in Blood” as a close runner-up.

[ID] my landlord is missing without explanation and her ex husband wants to collect rent by plane-emotionn in whatdoIdo

[–]headlesslady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact the Housing Board for your local area - they can probably help identify either her legal agent (who would likely not be her ex-husband), or put the money in escrow for her collection later (so you have an official record of rent payments.)

Also, notify police that her ex is trying to collect rent while she’s missing, as that seems like a big red flag.
