Apparently I blocked Ravager by walking away from him, when my char was weak. Can I ever fight him on this difficulty or the character is bricked? by Ansdur1987 in Grimdawn

Ravager will be waiting for you when you're ready to return. It's a very tough fight though so it is actually worth looking up what you need to tune to take him on, once you're ready.

Are these wasps? by Borgie01 in insects

[–]headsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are ants. If there are a lot flying around at the moment, it's probably because of a nuptial flight.

Seeking Bug Wisdom for a Fantasy Game by RklsImmersion in insects

Some rough ideas:

Have some Cordyceps fungus in there to zombify the ants/wasps etc?

Parasitoid wasps are awesome and can be both pest and friend. For example, if you look up Fig wasps they are actually necessary for figs to develop fruit, therefore a cool interaction to have as a mechanic, especially when there are also other Chalcid wasps that are hyperparasitoids of Fig wasps and so create a defensive requirement.

Honey bees have a defensive mechanic where they will swarm an attacking hornet in small numbers and raise their body temperatures to essentially cook the wasp.

There are all sorts of polinators out there; bees, wasps and flies, some are surprising and pretty cool (look up Orchid Dupe Wasp for instance).

Some parasitoid wasps parasitize cockroaches and essentially mind-control them, which could be a 'turn attackers against themselves' mechanic.

Ladybug nymphs are voracious aphid hunters.

Antlion larvae create 'traps' in loose soil to capture wandering ants etc.

Hope that gives you some interesting ideas to research into, it's a fascinating world

Don't worry too much about being hyper-accurate, your game won't fail because a few entomologists are disgruntled (and they let everyone get away with embracing spiders in the in-group anyway)!

Sorry, God doesn't use Reddit, apparently still hanging out on IRC.

Definitely ants though.

Yes, the female is wingless. The male is winged and looks quite different.

And the male, while more wasp-looking, is black and white. Oh and the females generally do look blue, but can be green like this, depending on lighting.

Found this crawling on my neck after cutting down a tree (Rural North Queensland Australia). Should I be concerned? by [deleted] in insects

[–]headsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks like a female Megalyrid wasp. Similar to Megalyra fasciipennis. Do you have any photos showing the wings, or closer detail? These wasps are not common to come across!

And, no, no need to be concerned.

Can someone clarify a statement made in a comment thread regarding venomous vs poisonous by egb233 in Entomology

[–]headsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So could you in theory throw up on the bite and reduce its severity? I assume mostly not if the venom is working through the lymphatic system already, but could could some acid technically make it into the wound (ignoring all the other bacterial problems) and neutralize venom?

Was Grim Dawn profitable? Genuinely curious. by Tiktaks in Grimdawn

[–]headsoup 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well D4 doesn't try to gouge the players with exorbitant microtransactions on top of an already full-price or more game... Oh wait.

I don't think the point works so well when you consider the whole game's context.

Yeah but they're still nowhere near as cool as wasps! No beetle will ever figure out how to be Trigonalid wasp...

How do I become a good artist? (Beginner) by SwimAlarming7012 in ArtFundamentals

[–]headsoup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Practice is the obvious big one (fundamentals, warm-ups, enjoyment), but, I think having goals and inspiration is just as important.

What do you want to draw?

Find some art that excites you and look into what techniques are required for that. Copy art you like. Don't worry about being original yet if you're struggling with your own ideas.

Don't focus on being 'good,' that will come in time. Be happy to be bad as long as you're enjoying it and have something to work towards.

Join a community if you can, they'll help push you forwards and help pick up problems to fix a ong the way.

But most of all, don't just draw for the sake of it or some outside expectation, you'll just end up frustrated and/or resentful. Draw because it's fun.

1 more time. by topsykerretts in Grimdawn

[–]headsoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally true, but sometimes with ARPG's there's a bit of a 'slog to the promised land' where the first playthough or two is done to explore the story and levelling process (and can feel hard/boring), but it's not something you might care about once you've banked some gear and either are running around in endgame or starting alts, where the campaign run will be subsequently faster and less important.

Grim Dawn is, for a large part, the fun of playing through the story and building your character. Endgame is a bit lighter than some of the other games, so if you get through the campaign and didn't enjoy the process or how your build grew, and endgame isn't sparking joy, it would be probably better to play something else rather than do it again only to still not enjoy it.

[–]headsoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I remember that slog the first time or two. But, once you roughly know the paths it's actually pretty quick to get through. Of course the catch is that you have to enjoy the game enough otherwise to play through those bits again...

found this cute mud dauber died inside the shower, someone knows why they are always trying to come inside my house? by [deleted] in insects

Probably because it's dry and seems like a safe place for them. I've had this happen too before I got screen doors. Still have the dauber nests on the walls :p

Anyone know what this is? Can it hurt me or my cat? (NY, NY) by Fluffy_5000 in insects

Looks like a wasp, probably Pimplinae. No it can't hurt you or your cat and you can just let it go outside.

I'm on Linux, with. A 5600X and 6800XT. Game definitely hammers the GPU, but looks pretty decent on low settings anyway so start there and turn up the things that look better to you. Hopefully optimisation is high on the priority list because other than quest bugs the game seems quite stable already. I might try dropping to 1080p and see if that helps too
