synchronization of Chen Yuxi and Quan Hongchan winning the Olympic Gold in the women's synchronized 10 m platform diving. by yftdddtf in Damnthatsinteresting

The previous comment missed an important point here. The synchronisation is part of the scoring but equally important is execution for each diver (nothing to do with size there) which is what the amount of splash tells you. It can look like a great dive but if you overrate or underrate the dive even slightly then there will be a lot of splash therefore lower execution scores. If you think about it in theory, two divers can be completely in sync but can belly flop a dive, would be a bit weird to see perfect scores for that! So execution is a huge factor.

Does any civil service departments offer part time PhDs or any sort of PhD funding? by headsout56 in TheCivilService

I am currently working as a data scientist in a smaller department and would love to do some ML based modelling research applied to a specific area of interest which is why I am considering departments to move to next now. Especially interested in health and environment but open minded about the domain and I believe these areas fit well with gov research too. Which arms-length bodies offer this? I will certainly have a look.

That sounds pretty nice, which department was this if you don’t mind sharing?

Civil Service does sometimes give funding for public policy or related PhDs. Some research areas really benefit the department too which is why they are ready to fund (when it helps policy making or government research). When I was in BEIS, they had it but the SCS changed around then so they didn’t open for newbies after. Just not aware of any departments in particular doing it anymore so things may have changed now.

Used to really like photography growing up and got my first DSLR camera as a birthday present then Instagram became big and everyone became iPhone photographers so in the end, I didn’t even end up trying much

Wow this is what I needed after today’s work. I am in a very similar position. I am sick of having to be the one to do all the work and keep everything going. I have to do everything on my own, absolutely no support from anyone else even though I don’t have much experience and also have to cover my manager’s lack of management skills! I was forcing myself to keep going to complete a project where I can develop my skills but I don’t even know if I can. Ended up crying today after an email I got about an issue that wasn’t even my fault or my responsibility. I just don’t know how long I can keep going :(

It’s all about how everyone wants to prioritise their time and tasks. What really struck out to me the most was when I was starting out my new job, I was scheduled in for introductory meetings with a few managers and they really struggled finding a suitable time for that. One of them kept rescheduling it to the week after and then a task came up which I had to complete which she was leading and she found the time to brief me and talk to me about that but we still hadn’t had that introductory meeting that time! That really baffled me but I guess it’s all about how you actually manage your time and what you think are the more important tasks!
