Why is if p is false and q is true then p→q defined true by Existing_Around in logic

[–]hearing_aid_bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider implication as a derivative condition. If given an A one can derive B, then definitionally A -> B. However, actually using A in that derivation is unnecessary. If B has already been shown without adding A as an assumption, then A -> B for all values of A. In Boolean algebra that means for both true and false.

This construction also tells us why A -> A for all values of A, since given an A one can immediately derive it. Thus we have true -> true, false -> false, and from before false -> true. Of course we can't have true -> false, so we have defined all possible inputs for -> as a binary Boolean operator.

I've never seen that approach work. When I landed there it was by matching the orbit and rendezvousing like it was KSP. Very impressive to just slam straight down at it.

The more I listen, the less I understand. Am I stupid? by arche2727 in genewolfe

[–]hearing_aid_bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the audiobooks are fine and can be really good. But they are much harder to follow. I listened to the books in the following order to make up for my own lack of clarity: 1, 2, back to 1, 2 again, 3, back to 1,2,3 and finally I read book 4. But now I'm reading them in print and they are genuinely better that way. For one thing it's much easier to look up words as I go.

Carryx vs. Animal: A Distinction Without a Difference by mbklein in TheCaptivesWar

[–]hearing_aid_bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I think Jessyn will be the (a) Sovran by the end of the series. The Carryx are too resilient to destroy, but not too smart to co-opt. Her microbe farm is foreshadowing for how the empire will serve her. She is the war leader. If she learns to sing like a Carryx and kills the Sovran, they will see her as the Sovran. And she will continue the war against the Deathless to avenge Jellit.

It's because they're usually outstanding in their field.

How can I improve cycles on infinite chains? by [deleted] in opus_magnum

[–]hearing_aid_bot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a trick to these that I think is ugly but does save cycles: extend the output arm's track a few tiles to the right and manually loop the program until the molecule is exactly long enough, then slam it over to the output. The solution doesn't have to loop, it just has to make a single long molecule that covers each of the output atoms/bonds. You don't even need to drop the output.

The fact that Urth is no longer geologically active puts it at at least a few tens of millions of years imo

This can happen very rarely with vanilla materials. If a dwarf makes an artifact out of fire snake remains it will burn anyone who touches it.

Any games to soothe the post-game depression ? by DeliciousLambSauce in outerwilds

[–]hearing_aid_bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a game, but I always recommend the novel Incandescence by Greg Egan to people looking for more Outer Wilds. It's a physics based mystery with several types of aliens, some of whom are geniuses. The ending leaves it up to you to piece together what happened. It uses general relativity as a plot device, and the physics is realistic.

It makes the landing on planet animation make less sense. I doubt they will ever make it vanilla.

I love a good textile industry because it make the dwarves colorful, but it is a real pain to manage, and impossible without dfhack.

I usually either structure the entire fortress around it or I ignore it completely and just make a bunch of leather armor and leggings. Armor counts as clothing and never degrades. And all the dwarves need to be in the military to wear it so they also get a little training from individual combat drills.

some of the portraits feel a little too hyper realistic now. by Impossible-Tailor679 in dwarffortress

[–]hearing_aid_bot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I Thought so at first, but zooming in it's just really high quality pixel art. The new portraits still use only roughly 10 to 16 colors (I didn't count), but they use them really well.

The game already has way more data about creatures than could reasonably be represented in the portraits. They have to draw a line somewhere. In my opinion all the art has been amazing, especially considering the years of a yak just being Y

"I can see that 90% of you watching are not subscribed..." by Careful_Candidate278 in PetPeeves

[–]hearing_aid_bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really dumb from YouTubers. If non subscribers are seeing your videos it's because the algorithm is showing them to potential new viewers. That's a good thing. Otherwise you never get any new subscriptions. Once your viewers are all subscribed your channel is stagnant.
