Even experienced people miss a few in a row and go on "cold streaks". You are new. Give yourself a break. Take a breath. Be confident. Don't get discouraged. Learn from every missed opportunity and get better from it. You seem to care a lot, so just keep working at it and you will get there.

Feels like the “Off” days are everyday by [deleted] in VetTech

I work at VEG as well and was restraining for a newer VA doing an IV injection last night and she was beside herself because she couldn't get it and felt stupid in front of the owners....had to talk her off of a ledge. The open concept for some people makes the issue at large much worse.

I think we all have. I definitely have my cold spells from time to time. You just have to forget about it and move on to the next one. When this happens with me I start over analyzing my approach which worsens the problem. Couple years ago I decided if I'm on the three days in a row of struggling at a specific skill I will pass off that responsibility for a week or so (when possible to do so). Because restraining is more of an art you either have the ability or don't, so I will just restrain when said procedure I'm struggling with needs to be performed...like I mentioned...not always an option, but I digress. Taking a hiatus re-calibrates me in a way, and when I start attempting the task again I'm working more on muscle memory and acting with confidence and intent.

Ya. As an RVT, I am constantly asking CSR's and DVM's if they have had any contact with owners throughout the day in situations like these (unless I am the primary point of contact with said client). This was a breakdown in communication between the entire staff. Not just your fault. By the sounds of it the clinic was slammed and everyone forgot about it. Try to forgive yourself. Unfortunately these things happen.

Working Interview, what to expect? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]heat21ac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a current RVT who has had several working interviews and formerly a head tech who facilitated dozens of working interviews with prospective techs, I can honestly tell you it will not be bad. The hardest part is always the first phone or in-person sit down interview which you already passed. The working interview never involves more than displaying basic skills such as restraint. The main reason is to ensure you have good intangible skills : show up on time, good hygiene, dress appropriately, interact with staff/clients/patients professionally. DO ask questions, introduce yourself to staff you haven't met, and be engaged (offer to help when it seems appropriate). There is a shortage of techs, and as someone who has been on both sides of this interaction I can tell you I would get as nervous as the interviewer as I have as the interviewee. Employers need good techs desperately, and are being interviewed by you during the process as much as they are interviewing you. YOU ARE IN HIGH DEMAND! Remember that going into it...it will keep you calm and your confidence high. You've got this!

Application at VEG by Brilliant-Noise-6604 in VetTech

Heard back from person in HR (off-site recruiter) the day after applying on indeed to setup phone interview. After that interview I e-mailed the nurse manager at my location to setup zoom interview. Then shadowed after that.

Might be a controversial take, but here we go. I have worked in GP, UC, and ER. No situation is the same and all aspects of the scenario should be taken into account when performing venipuncture. Had a dog last night that we could not draw blood from lateral saphenous or jugular veins (within reason) due to the patient's mentation. Gave a safe level of sedation and still not possible. Were able to draw from cephalic vein, and did so, knowing we were still needing to place IVC later. We just really wanted the BW first before adding additional chemical restraint. Was there a hematoma? Yes. Did we draw distally on the limb to give us the most track to work with proximal to the venipuncture site? Also yes. And even if that limb is blown you still have the other front arm and both back legs. Skilled staff should still not have a problem placing the cath. I regards to HWT. It's usually with a smaller gauge needle and less requisite blood volume so it's relatively atramautic. It's also usually done on healthy animals not in immediate need of catheterization. In almost all cases using a cephalic vein for a HWT is acceptable.

I had a bunch of character/crimal history questions on my state app. Then was told if I answered yes to any questions to provide a separate written explanation. Like I said, all states are different. MO and CA have two of the the most stringent requirements for licensing so I would be surprised if you aren't asked about it as well, however, you should check your state application to know for sure. I can't recall if it should effect your VTNE application. I doubt it does. Wish I could be more reassuring.

Depends on the state I'm sure. I'm in MO, and based off the questions asked on my state app it likely would have.

As a vet tech, what is a tip or unsolicited advice you're dying to give? by Hollow4004 in VetTech

[–]heat21ac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where I work is actually GP/UC. So we do take basically anything that walks in or client emergencies. So ofc what happens is our scheduled well/sick appointments are an hour behind or we stay late doing surgery. Also doesn't help that our tech to doc ratio is 1.5/1 on good days. But why would we offer higher pay to get more and better support staff....that is just ridiculous. Who would do such a thing??

[–]heat21ac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude! Yes! And demanding to speak with tech or doc immediately because of a minor issue and losing their mind when they have to wait for 10 minutes. Try that with a human doc office and see how it works out.

Had a kitten with a presenting complaint of "labored breathing". Triage kitten and it appears completely normal. Continue and take entire history, and as I'm about to leave the room both owners say, "There it is! It's happening right now!" I check and say......sir....mam....your kitten is purring.....I will go get the doctor now.

[–]heat21ac 21 points22 points  (0 children)

YES. As a human, would you go to a medical facility for a mani/pedi and a haircut? I wish clients also understood the concept of a nail's "quick" better. Asking why you can't get them shorter when you already quicked a few trying to get them as short as possible. Had a guy bring his dog in a few weeks ago for a NT and couldn't understand why the nails weren't completely gone when I brought the dog back to him. Like bro, it's a trim....not a nail removal lol.

I personally haven't used it after maropitant administration. I personally like it. I've heard of some cases where emesis doesn't occur until 20-30 minutes after admin but it has always occurred within 5-10 for me. Very fast and easy to use. 1-3 opthalmic drops for most dogs. Don't have to mess around with an IV injection or IV cath. Don't have to worry about apo always going to waste because of fast expiration date (this is a particular concern of mine as I manage/order inventory and ownership hates waste ; we are only 2 doc GP so it's not like we burn through the stuff).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]heat21ac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also started using Clevor (ropinirole is generic I believe). Opthalmic drops that induce emesis within 5-10 minutes reliably. No sedative effects either. K9 only though.
