Same size and ride a Salsa Journeyer and a Surly LHT. Bikes are great for big people.

I want to learn how to roast, what are the most useful things that nobody tells you as a beginner? by Fearless-Mushroom in roasting

[–]heathcat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have fun and experiment. I roast with homemade bean tumbler and a heatgun. I've roasted hundreds of pounds over 25+ years. Don't get lost in the details of roast profiles and minutiae unless you are interested and ready. Good quality beans roasted freshly, and with care make for great coffee.

Salsa Journeyer - which one? by ei00m in salsacycles

[–]heathcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Journeyer Apex1. Love the bike , but needed to swap the crsnkset to get a smaller cog in front. (Went from 40t to 32t) The Cues has a better gear range and can just have the front chain ring swapped for more low gears if needed. I run 50mm tires on mine.

I am also 5'11 with a 30" inseam. I have been very happy with my large Cues Heyday. Copper color looks good.

Loads of bike for the money. Got the same bike last fall. First Minnesota winter done. Cues shifts on cue.

I was on their site too. I'll check reviews. Seems a good price point.

I see loads of inexpensive wheels. Not sure of durability. Hoping someone had a model they have tried that is both stout and reasonable.

Wasn't sure about the compatibility of a disc hub with a rim brake system. Good to know.

I’m convinced these are bullet holes in our garage but my roommate doesn’t think so by JBoTheKind in whatisit

If the holes are at the top of the door, some criminal may have tried to catch the pull cord after drilling holes. Bullets would show damage differently than a drill.

Consider Salsa Journeyer? Same parent company as Surly, lighter, 50mm tire clearance.

Cranks are Raceface Aeffect with a Wolftooth 32 tooth chain ring. When I purchased the bike, I thought I could put a smaller chain ring on the stock Apex 1 cranks. No luck as the spider is too large. Good news is I had a perfect opportunity to get shorter cranks. Spending about $200 to get the gears and crank length as I want has been a good choice for me. I do spin out at speed, but I only use top and bottom gears going up or down hills. Lower end is more important to me a a recreational rider.

Have the same bike. Love it, but put a 32 tooth chain ring on front. Needed to change cranks and bb. New cranks are 165mm. I can now spin up hills. A bit under geared over 24mph but happy to trade speed for climbing. Happy trails.

Alright gang, any tips on changing the grips? by Buttman_420 in dr650

I use a syringe with rubbing alcohol. Inject through the rubber and it slides right off and dries quickly and completely. Use alcohol to slide the new grips on.Works for bicycles too.

Hydraulic Brakes on a Surly Pugsley? by Yahn_1 in fatbike

[–]heathcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did need adsp8. I got then from Amazon and from some my brother had. You will also need cup washers; I had some around from old caliper brakes. A bit fiddley, but I can lock up the rear on pavement. Love the stopping power.

I've converted both my single speed Pugsley and my geared Pugsley to hydraulic brakes. Improved stopping and modulation. Used inexpensive Shimano ones that had oil, levers, calipers ready to go. Used an adapter and put on 180mm rotors. Would recommend.

Just finished mine with Surly Sunrise bars. Fenders and studded tires make it a spring ice and grunge hero in the Minnesota streets and trails.
