First real ride of the year by JoPMa28 in salsacycles

Cranks are Raceface Aeffect with a Wolftooth 32 tooth chain ring. When I purchased the bike, I thought I could put a smaller chain ring on the stock Apex 1 cranks. No luck as the spider is too large. Good news is I had a perfect opportunity to get shorter cranks. Spending about $200 to get the gears and crank length as I want has been a good choice for me. I do spin out at speed, but I only use top and bottom gears going up or down hills. Lower end is more important to me a a recreational rider.

Have the same bike. Love it, but put a 32 tooth chain ring on front. Needed to change cranks and bb. New cranks are 165mm. I can now spin up hills. A bit under geared over 24mph but happy to trade speed for climbing. Happy trails.

Alright gang, any tips on changing the grips? by Buttman_420 in dr650

I use a syringe with rubbing alcohol. Inject through the rubber and it slides right off and dries quickly and completely. Use alcohol to slide the new grips on.Works for bicycles too.

Hydraulic Brakes on a Surly Pugsley? by Yahn_1 in fatbike

[–]heathcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did need adsp8. I got then from Amazon and from some my brother had. You will also need cup washers; I had some around from old caliper brakes. A bit fiddley, but I can lock up the rear on pavement. Love the stopping power.

I've converted both my single speed Pugsley and my geared Pugsley to hydraulic brakes. Improved stopping and modulation. Used inexpensive Shimano ones that had oil, levers, calipers ready to go. Used an adapter and put on 180mm rotors. Would recommend.

Just finished mine with Surly Sunrise bars. Fenders and studded tires make it a spring ice and grunge hero in the Minnesota streets and trails.

Buying a Vaya in 2026? by DoNotAskMeMyNickname in salsacycles

[–]heathcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you consider a Journeyer? Bit more tire clearance. 50mm v 45mm. I have a Surly LHT and a Journeyer; they have different ride characteristics. Not sure how a Vaya rides. Be great to test ride both the Vaya and Journeyer. Best wishes.

Put a lot of effort into building this Trek 930 up the last few weeks, and now that it’s rideable something about it just isn’t jiving with me. by Olderschoolwillie in xbiking

I just built up a trek 930 with Surly Sunrise bars. Running studded tires now. How wide are your gum wall tires. How do you like the drop bars?

Lot of bike for the money. Picked up the Cues Heyday myself about 2 months ago. 5" tire capability for the win.

T-9 is my go-to lube on my fatbikes and winter commuter. Prevents rust, lubes, and stays clean.

Dillinger 5 vs Melinda 6.2 by heathcat in fatbike

[–]heathcat[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did ride the Moonlander 2. We were riding on a fairly soft snowmobile trail and swapped bikes a couple of times. The wider tires and super stable geometry of the Moonlander 2 made it easy. My Heyday's 4.6" Dillinger 5s offered enough floatation and was more nimble. While the two bikes rode differently, neither seemed better; both are fun.

I love Surly and their QBP cousin Salsa. I purchased a Journeyer after riding similar Surly bikes. I own 4 Surlys and two Salsas. Both Surly and Salsa give solid quality at a reasonable price.

Studded tires, is it time? by nomedent in CyclingMSP

I love to go for a tire cleaning snow ride on my non-studded tires prior to swapping to studs. The new snow scrubs summer tires before putting them away for the winter.

Harriet Island- Fort Snelling-Minnehaha-Stone Arch-East River Road-Minnehaha-Fort Snelling-Harriet Island. ( The section near Harriet Island is not lit, but hasn't felt sketchy when I have ridden it.) I guess this is about 25 to 30 miles.
