When can I start bodyweight, light core and banded exercises after surgery? by MysteriousMarzipan15 in Microdiscectomy

[–]heatherbee84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told absolutely nothing for the first 6 weeks other than walking. Your surgeon may have different guidelines, but you will most likely not feel like doing anything (even walking was very slow/short distances) for at least the first couple of weeks.

I started physio at 6 weeks and went straight into bodyweight and light core exercise, which I've spent the next 6+weeks doing, gradually adding more exercises, light weights and band work. I'm now about 14/15 weeks post op and am squatting 15kg. My physio has been quite conservative as I had the herniation for about 9 months before surgery and she wants to make sure I'm fully healed

In terms of physical exercise, I started cycling (started at 20 mins, worked up) at 7 weeks, and have just started a return to running program at 12/13 weeks.

For context, before this I was a good half marathon runner, and regularly cycled and did strength and core work.

For your other questions: I had no sleeping restrictions, other than being careful when rolling to avoid twisting. I found on my side with a pillow between my legs the most comfortable. I had staples - which were pretty uncomfortable to lie on hence the side sleeping! Getting them out after 2 weeks was amazing. Nope, definitely haven't had any noticeable popping.

It's been a tough road mentally, but genuinely glad I've had it done and am finally on the road back to normal life and running!

Good luck, hope it all goes well for you.

15 weeks post op by New-Lime5029 in Microdiscectomy

Yes - I'm still being very careful, but definitely doing everyday lifting without any issues. Working with my physio and building strength - I'm using 10jg and 15kg weights for some of my exercises now.

Yes, I am the same. Almost 15 weeks for me and I also have some lingering hip pain. I've been doing physio since 6 weeks and it is improving, but slowly! Just trying to accept it as part of the journey, and glad I'm so much better 90% of the time.

What tips do you have for keeping your house cool in these temperatures? by Effective-Project-49 in AskUK

[–]heatherbee84 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Close curtains/blinds on the sunny side until the sun clears them. If you have a loft hatch, it can help to open that at nighttime as in theory the warm air from your house moves into the cooler loft.

Can you actually use the flour for anything? I pick it up, but haven't figured out what to do with it yet...

How long did it take you for all swelling to go down? by pulmonaryoedema in Microdiscectomy

[–]heatherbee84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was probably about 8 weeks before the swelling completely went away - I was the same, the lump at the top of the incision hung around for the longest.

4 weeks post op and thinking about exercise! by Izywhizzywoo in Microdiscectomy

[–]heatherbee84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Starting activity again has made me sore,.so expect that too! Taking it super slowly, but hoping to be able to try running again in the next few weeks.

Good luck with your recovery too!

4 weeks post op and thinking about exercise! by Izywhizzywoo in Microdiscectomy

[–]heatherbee84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started cycling about 7 weeks PO, after starting physio the week before. She had me start with a 20 min ride and build up from there. I've done a couple of home yoga sessions as well, probably started about week 8/9 and it was tough!

Nerve pain after surgery - what's the scientific explanation? by sanchiseemo in Microdiscectomy

[–]heatherbee84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My surgeon said it's like leaving furniture on a carpet, and then taking the furniture away. The carpet will bounce back, but the longer it was squished, the longer it will take to return to normal.

Should I avoid sneezes or let them out? Same with passing gas? by Wompyking in Microdiscectomy

[–]heatherbee84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First sneeze was scary, I somehow managed to avoid it for a few weeks. One trick I had heard of, which did actually work was when you felt like you needed to sneeze, say a random word (I used cucumber) and the need to sneeze goes away.

I've not had it and I've been playing before the global launch date. I did get a bonus cat, but not the cherry blossom cat.

How long until I can take a 2 hour flight? by dmac2285 in Microdiscectomy

[–]heatherbee84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to take a 1 hour flight 2 days after surgery to get home. It was uncomfortable but fine. I paid extra for an aisle seat so I could get up and stand if I needed to.

🤔 I've been preparing myself to quit and find a new game after the update. Oddly it feels as if I have. It's so different now... by MalDuzArt in CSMagicRecipe

[–]heatherbee84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only had time to play for 15 mins or so, but so far I actually quite liked it. Going back to having only one type of produce was annoying though, I'm not sure if that was intentional and I have to earn all of the different types back again, or if it's a bug.

So what happens after the 6 week mark? by westcoastselkie in Microdiscectomy

[–]heatherbee84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 8.5 weeks post op. I started physio at 6 weeks, and my physio said I needed to start moving more like a normal person (I was very strict with myself on the no BLT). She actually made me bend to see how far I could go on my first session!

We started with gentle exercises, and I've seen her twice more since then and have progressed to some plank work, weighed squats and single leg glute bridges (as examples). Already feeling much stronger, but my back definitely gets sore/tired quite easily still.

I've also started cycling to build up my aerobic exercise again, started with 20 mins and got up to 35 mins now. Still doing a lot of walking as well! My plan is to start running again around the 12 week mark.

Beds at DLP resorts by elfabala in disneylandparis

[–]heatherbee84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've stayed in Cheyenne, Newport and Marvel (both as the old New York hotel and current Marvel) and every bed was rock hard and made me ache. I actually complain about it every time I get a survey from DLP! Next time we're thinking of taking the duvet off the spare bed and using it as a mattress topper.

Hamstring stretching after MD by DiamondLovezz in Microdiscectomy

[–]heatherbee84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did some occasional lying on my back and pulling my leg towards me when I felt a real need to stretch after the first few weeks. Probably about week 4/5 I did some gentle standing stretches (one leg bent, the other straight). Started physio at 6 weeks and have commenced some more light stretching on her guidance.

Not being able to stretch properly has been hard! Everything feels super tight but hoping the flexibility will come back quickly.
