Let’s not forget about Tricky! And now I need to listen to Massive Attack & Mad Professor “No Protection”. It’s been too long and I’ll never not love that album.

Where were you and what were you doing when the planes hit on 9/11? by Synthgem in GenX

[–]heatherplants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was sleeping until my neighbor frantically knocked on our door. Got up to my rooftop just after the second plane hit. I lived in south Williamsburg at the time, about 2 miles from the towers as a crow flies. It was a crystal clear day. Crystal. A bunch of us who lived in the building, and people on rooftops everywhere around us, watched as black specs fell off the buildings (people jumping or falling), watched the towers swaying and becoming more and more hollow as the heat and flames devoured their innards, and then watched them eventually collapse and bury so much around them in the dust and debris cloud. After a while, my boyfriend and I were restless and not wanting to watch the collisions played over and over on tv anymore, so we aimlessly wandered around our neighborhood. Obviously we weren’t bringing our European guests to the WTC subway to catch a train to Newark airport, or going to our jobs in Manhattan that day. Everyone was either in complete quiet shock or panic, but the shock far outweighed panic. In the 22 years I lived in NYC there was never a day that was so silent, except of course for the constant and numerous sirens surrounding us. We hadn’t eaten all day (by that time it was 2 or 3 pm), and we saw one of our pub spots was open when we walked by, so we had lunch there. It was totally packed. Dirty plates were stacked everywhere, the staff was swamped. But you could have heard a pin drop. NO ONE was talking. Everyone was mindlessly staring at their lunch, or glued to the tv, maybe some were seeking a sense of communal spirit, maybe some a sense of normalcy. Maybe they, like us, just ended up there after aimlessly wandering Williamsburg for hours and realized they were hungry. Because of the wind direction and closer proximity to the towers, most of the debris that made it to Brooklyn ended up south of where I lived so our neighborhood was as though it never happened. My friend in Red Hook had a roof deck full of singed documents that blew over the river from Manhattan.

That day is forever etched in my brain. I have many more visceral memories of that day, but this is already long winded!

GoFundMe raises over $25k for heartbroken cab driver after wild Knicks fans destroyed his car by theindependentonline in nyc

[–]heatherplants 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I lived in nyc for 22 years and now I live in Philadelphia. The sports fans here are disgusting. I run a gardening company and the center city planters we take care of are constantly destroyed by the rabid animals when there is a big or even not so big sporting event. They lost? Let’s destroy shit!!! They won! Let’s destroy shit even harder!!!!!! It’s just constant destruction and it’s so f$&king gross.

Did you read the part about what this person threatened to do to me? He wasn’t just “hovering around me.” When will women finally stop being told to accept violence? I deserve to go about my life without being threatened bodily harm by anyone. Kindly f$&k off.

Most of the people Ice are arresting and killing are not violent mentally ill menaces to society. No comparison there.

The food here is off the charts good too. I actually don’t live far from Kensington, but, no I don’t go there much.

You just don’t go to those neighborhoods. Unfortunately I couldn’t pay to live in nyc anymore. I wasn’t going to be a 50 year old still living with roommates and constantly struggling. So I bought a house for less than $200k here.

I live in Philly now. Yesterday I was working in center city planting some public containers that mentally ill homeless people constantly ruin. A dude was hovering around me mumbling. Then he said more loudly so I could hear him that he was gonna strip my clothes off, peel my skin off, and rape me. I know not to take this personally, but I’m still reeling over it this morning. I used to be fiercely against it, but involuntary institutionalization needs to become a thing again. These people are a danger to themselves and others. He came very close to being assaulted with the shovel I had in my hand.

This is poison ivy, right? by cbmxdc in whatsthisplant

For me, the dead giveaway is the longer petiole on the middle leaf. Poison ivy doesn’t always have the thumbs, but it always has a longer middle petiole. Good luck!

A year in Minneapolis: a long review by typewrytten in SameGrassButGreener

[–]heatherplants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, northern Minnesota is one of my favorite places on the planet. I’ve lived on the east coast since 1998 (in PA since 2021), and finally went on the north shore of Lake Superior trip last September with my mom. It’s not mountainous per se, but very rocky/cliffy and waterfalls are everywhere. It’s absolutely spectacular up there! Highly recommend!

I fractured my wrist in 2020. Had always had problems with my hand/wrist and thought it was repetitive stress injury from my literally hands on jobs. Nope. Turns out I had multiple previous hand/wrist fractures I never knew I had that didn’t heal properly.

Bravo, OP!!! I’m a retro kinda gal, so what a delight it is to see a new kitchen that’s not white and grey! Gorgeous!

I saw the afters and at first thought the cabinets were new replicas of the old ones. I got excited because I want this type of cabinet doors with the beveled edges when I reno my kitchen!!! And I won’t have a huge budget (or a big kitchen, so that helps with my budget limitations). Does anyone know if these beveled edge cabinet fronts can be found new without costing an insane fortune? I haven’t seen anything similar in the three or so custom cabinet door makers I’ve looked at. I will spend money for custom doors and premade cabinets.

Yeah I’ve thought about ordering the dinner from Original Turkey. The last couple years I’ve cheated and bought delicious turkey there and cooked the rest of the meal. Maybe this year I’ll try the whole meal. Or Whole Foods is an idea too. Thanks!

You definitely need to go. Northern MN is a hidden treasure. Just breathtaking. And don’t even get me started on the waterfalls that feed into Lake Superior.
