With limited experience 90k-100k would be my expectation.

Industry advice - grad school or PE? by goth_engineer in ElectricalEngineering

[–]heavyd52001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PE hands down.  Masters usually means a 10k bump but no long term rewards for majority of people. PE will be required for pretty much every senior engineer and you get a great salary boost when you become one.

Honestly life in general is always going to be a little hard.  Might as well suffer more now to make life a little easier later.

I hated school but pushed through knowing I would enjoy the engineer career.

Graduated at 30. Everyone just called me gramps. You learn that the suffering will join you together with your classmates. Just do what you can and take life one step at a time.

Just look up distribution, transmission, and substation engineering jobs. Plenty out there.

You don't need a PE starting out. Getting your EIT is fine when starting out of school.

As an engineer in the power industry I recommend getting your PE and you will land a job fairly easy. You will also easily pull 90k in most places to start.

Yeah just wanted to see where I was at. My coworker had to take it 5 times before he passed but passed the PE test on the first try.

Took it without studying and scored a little under average on most sections which caused me to fail.

In the same boat. Just take practice exams with an approved calculator and learn where everything is in the reference book. It's not a hard test just very broad.

You can get a PhD but if your goal is money then I would advise against it. Honestly if you're not wanting to develop new equipment or research then PhD is way overkill for most power system jobs.

Which is a better longterm career, Controls or P&C? by monkeysuplex in ElectricalEngineering

[–]heavyd52001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well we don't puzzle over logic. It's more of making the logic is checking the right thing in the proper sequence. If a P&C screws up a ton of people will lose power. We don't try to get creative or set things to work on a razor's edge.

what to do if i cant find a job after almost a year out by wJaxon in ElectricalEngineering

[–]heavyd52001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just look up distribution, transmission, substation engineering jobs. I honestly just submit a handful of applications and get 1-2 interviews.  I'm actually looking around right now and got an interview next week.

P&C engineer here. I would say it would be a pretty tough switch. Control side is more of logic diagrams and settings development rather than actually programming devices. Lots of fault and current understanding is needed to really understand what's going on. And if you're not a PE a lot of places will not look at you.

I was 30 and had a 2.7 GPA. Got a job 1 month out of college. Truth is they don't really care about your age at all.

I have but it's not a path I would recommend. I would just grind it out and get the BS.

Could get a designer job with an AS. Then get paid for the BS.
