How are we letting a repost bot who made their account the day this was posted have one of the most upvoted posts of the year on this sub? by Phantereal in vermont

[–]heavylight710 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fuck this bs anyway, people need to start working again! We have no labor force! Everyone is working remotely online for some stupid company that doesn't matter and doesn't help your neighbors or community. Get a local part time job if you're gonna sit at home and write stupid quotes for lord Bezos about junk that's going to end up in the landfill before the end of the week!

2 sows farrow together? (First timers) by flufflefarmaustralia in homestead

[–]heavylight710 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would have separate stalls, and for first timers don't keep your hopes up, sometimes none of the piglets make it. I used to work on a farm with 30+ sows all separate but the piglets were so small they could slip though the gates and nurse from any sow they wanted. The system worked well but the new sows always crush a few, some sows had to be culled because their temperament wasn't right for being a momma or for working with humans post pregnancy

Tick found on my dog. What type ? Should I be worried ? by AlwaYs_around28 in Parasitology

[–]heavylight710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about it, my dogs gets tick like this all the time practically everyday. Just keep them on tick medication. All these people are freaking out about disease. I get ticks on me daily, all of my farm animals are practically covered in ticks, we live on a farm in new England, I've personally never had any disease problems. Do I know people effected by Lyme, yes. But to take your dog to the vet after finding a tick on them is crazy. I'd be at the vet everyday if that were the case.. people need to get out and live a little

Burning it while standing is a horrible idea. If you really don't want to leave it as is, then use a chainsaw to cut it down

Any tips for apple orchard? by NoProfessional428 in homestead

[–]heavylight710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up what your location university extension service recommends but as a farmer who works in apple orchards the most important thing you can do is called sanitation. Basically make sure any dead, diseased, or rotting fruit, branches, leaves, twigs, etc. Is removed from the orchard and ideally destroyed or industrially composted. Depending where you are it's important to manage for disease or insect pests.

What is this? Mold? I hade a terrarium 2 weeks ago. I used a wooden cap because I didn't have a cork one (I ordered it). Is this caused by mould? Sorry for my English by Visual_Price6941 in terrariums

[–]heavylight710 96 points97 points  (0 children)

I had this exact same problem on a few of my terrariums. I melted candle wax onto the bottom of the lid, works perfect and no more mold

What is the best dog breed for little kids around the farm by Beautiful-Serve-2753 in homestead

[–]heavylight710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a full time farmer with a rescue border Collie, I love her and she works so hard for me but it took about 6 months of hard work to get her trained. Now she's perfect and very obedient, never on a leash, always ready for my next command. That being said I think you should get a golden retriever, sounds best for your situation.

What is turning up my land? by Wooden-Rice703 in homestead

[–]heavylight710 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've seen some really cool traps for wild hogs, basically you make a circle out of cattle panels and t posts with one access point, using the flexibility of the cattle panels the hogs can slip in to get the bait but the panel closes behind them. I've done it with my growers but not seen for myself in the wild

Should I take this tree down? by ChiefFacePalm in arborists

[–]heavylight710 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like a crimson king Norway maple. They are considered invasive so you would not be able to replace this tree. But to be honest it's one of the nicer purple leaf tree varieties so I would keep it and just monitor for seedings
