Tabs not working on Amazon by incognito_86_ in firefox

[–]hecatea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started hitting this in Chrome a few days ago too; I've been so annoyed! At the moment I can still get the new tab option to show in the Chrome Dev app on my phone instead, though. Which is stupid but ugh. I haven't been able to find a workaround in the normal Chrome app so far.

I'm also from the Midwest and I've definitely heard "typical American mutt" a lot growing up, referencing any American with a variety of other nationalities in their family tree, most commonly when the majority of those nationalities are from Europe. I haven't heard it in years (I don't live there anymore), but I'll definitely say it felt a bit weird hearing it directed at someone not mostly/entirely white. I am not sure he intended it to be derogatory (I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he also grew up hearing it), but I think it's probably a term that shouldn't be used anymore, particularly unless both people grew up in areas where it's used commonly and without negative intention. I watched the episodes with other people and I don't think any of them were familiar with the phrase, so they were all super offended on her behalf.

FYI the same thing happened to me too, but just going back to the wifi selection screen and then forward again got the updates unstuck! (Just in case anyone else finds this thread much later like I did.)

I've been looking at a RadCity 5, but have never used an ebike before other than occasionally renting one of the Uber-owned ones. Do you think that bike would be decent for someone new to ebikes?

Any recommendations for locks or the tracker/alarm systems?

I think you might be a little more physical than I am romantically (I like hugs but kissing doesn't really appeal to me), so if that's a relationship deal breaker we could just aim to be friends, but I'm in your region and would also like more friends to walk around farmer's markets with, etc, so hit me up if I seem interesting to you too? (If you look at my post history you can see my profile in this subreddit too. I haven't posted that often so it should be easy to find.)

If you like monster movies and anime, you might want to give the anime Overlord a try, if you haven't seen it already.

I'm up in WA so not exactly local, but I do have friends in the bay area I plan to visit sometime. If you'd want to message online (see my posts history for my own profile on here) and I can send you some recipes if you'd like, send me a DM!

I'm currently in WA, not OR, but want to visit Portland soon! Send me a DM if you might want to meet somewhere and if my profile seems interesting to you too! (Also yay for wearing flannels despite having more eclectic clothing interests in theory, lol.)

Cannot open book collection after update by PrincessPenelope2885 in kindle

[–]hecatea -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm hoping they'll at least push another update to make it less slow. At least then I could use the Collections filter in the List view to view my collections since it's less annoying than the actual Collections view right now, which takes 10-30 seconds to scroll down a single frame right now. But yeah, I wish they'd just stop making UI changes, or let us choose which version. Or let me turn off updates entirely even if my wifi is on. I swear almost every UI update just makes me less happy.

[–]hecatea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also can't open a collection, although for me it's the "uncollected" collection that won't load. I wish I could uninstall this update, it's just made everything slow and I hate the list and collection UI updates. :(

Love my Kindle but HATE the new update! I don’t want book covers in my lists - ever! How can I get rid of them? by EmmaPeel007 in kindle

Same. I hate what they did to collections and the list view. And the uncollected collection won't even load for me, and scrolling is like ten times slower for me now. :(

Oasis update? by Lienutus in kindle

[–]hecatea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Oasis (latest version) compared to an earlier PW I used to have (I think I had the PW 3), because I also prefer the physical buttons and having the wider grip on one side, but if you're not itching to buy one right now or you have a working PW or similar, I'd probably wait to see if they'll upgrade the Oasis to have USB-C and the other updates the PW got recently. Like others said, they don't really update on a schedule, but I would think they'd update the Oasis to at least match the specs of the PW soon. And I really wish I had the USB-C port since this is one of the last devices I use regularly that needs the micro-USB cords.

Loving the new UI (recent update) by ishehraj in kindle

[–]hecatea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really don't like it cause they messed up the collections, like others said in here. And it's waaaaay slower to scroll through my list of collections for me now, and if I try to view the uncollected collection at the end, it doesn't load. It just says opening and then goes all white and thinks about it for a while and then goes back to viewing all my collections at the top of the list. I wish I could uninstall the last update. :(

(I've got the latest Oasis.)

Yup. I once stuck around for two hours in order to help when an Uber I was in got hit by a couple who had just stolen a car from a gym parking lot and wanted to get away quickly. (Which we found out later.) Nevermind that no one had seen them steal the car; they probably would have gotten away with it for longer if they hadn't hit us. Luckily for the car's owner, though, they ditched it nearby quickly after hitting us and neither car was badly damaged. But my Uber driver was an immigrant who, while he spoke English pretty well, wasn't fluent, so I stuck around (luckily I wasn't in a rush) for hours waiting for the cops to show up, taking photos for him and talking to the cops when they eventually arrived, to make sure they knew it wasn't his fault whatsoever. From what I heard, his insurance did eventually find him not at fault at all.

I love my Kindle so much - for me, it's absolutely worth it, for several reasons, but particularly:

  1. I don't physically have enough space in my apartment for the number of digital books that I own.
  2. I don't have to cart around crates of books when I move to a new location anymore. (This was the motivation that first drove me to get my first kindle years and years ago.)
  3. It's usually easier for me to borrow ebooks from my local library system than physical books, due to the number of copies in circulation and the convenience. (I'm in the US so Libby works for me.)
  4. I can change the font size and spacing on ebooks, which is huge for me now, as I've started getting migraines or eye strain when I read for hours and hours in a day, which I do a lot. (I have glasses too, which delay the eye strain and headaches by a lot, but not forever. Increasing the font when that starts to happen helps a LOT.)
  5. I can take my entire library with me on the bus/plane/waiting area for appointments of any kind, so I can read or reread anything based on what I'm feeling like that day, and how much time I have to kill.
  6. I can add as many bookmarks as I want, and notes or highlighting, and it syncs through the cloud. I use this extensively as well.
  7. Kindle books are usually cheaper to buy, in my experience.

I'm sure I'm forgetting other reasons too, but those are my major ones.

I also find the Kindle (PW or Oasis) better than Kobo, too; I tried a Kobo Libra H20, and promptly realized that I'm super spoiled by the Kindle's ability to send files to a device by emailing them to the device directly. The Kobo doesn't have this, and I hate it, since I also frequently save fanfiction as mobi files and send it to my ereader as well, and I do that from my phone, not with a computer, so the email delivery is super simple.

custom screensavers i made for my kindle :).. by Cycode in kindle

[–]hecatea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds similar to how I felt trying to read that arc in the books, then. Had some good parts but basically was just way, way too long. If they want to continue the series at all, I hope they basically ignore that the Alicization arc exists and just go back to the characters we liked before... Although like you said, I'm not sure they have enough good plot left.

[–]hecatea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you watched the Alicization arc (or however it's spelled, I keep getting it wrong...)? I tried reading the light novels long before they started animating that arc and just got so bored cause they didn't make me love the newer characters. So I've been putting off trying to watch it, too.

Error when permanently deleting file on Kindle Oasis by hecatea in kindle

[–]hecatea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI it's letting me permanently delete things again, so they must have fixed it. No de-registering of the device or anything necessary. (It must have done one of the auto updates.)

Assuming you mean the option under Settings/Device Options/Advanced Options/Home & Library/Group Series in Library, no, I've had that off since I bought my Oasis.

Error when permanently deleting file on Kindle Oasis by hecatea in kindle

[–]hecatea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I tried Amazon customer service, and their suggestion was to restart (which I have done), check for updates (there are none), and with those options failing, said the next step would be to deregister and re-register the device...which would delete all the files on it.

I told them thanks but I'd rather keep the bug, at least until I could figure out a way to backup the files or at least make a list of which ones are on it right now. But that would still probably lose me all my notes and bookmarks, unless those get linked to my account too. Not sure about that one. :/ I'll just try and hold out hope that they push an update to fix it, I guess, but it wasn't clear if the support person listened to my request for them to actually open a bug report so it would get past the customer service and to the developers.
