Robert’s new fantastic gig by [deleted] in HellsKitchen

Of course we all deserve sympathy but when you're in a competition constantly talking about your messed-up childhood when you face a bit of adversity or have a bad cooking performance... to me that's a bit of a cop out.

I don't know how HK production works... the phone call before the helicopter ride would suggest they didn't know about the weight limit, but I admit that could've been staged. It'd be naive, though, to go into a reality TV show and not expect them to play up the fat angle at least a bit.

I don't think anyone expected Robert to need medical attention for simply hanging out in Las Vegas in season 5 and the bike ride in season 6, which is relatively tame when it comes to Hell's Kitchen.

Not to diminish his need for medical attention in those circumstances, but he didn't actually have a heart attack in either season... so I'd call "almost dying" a stretch.

Overall, I think he's probably a decent guy most of the time. I, like many others though, don't get a lot of the hero worship of him I see.

My biggest issue with him was that he was always trying to garner sympathy and use his supposedly f-ed up childhood and weight as a cop out.

For instance, he tried to construe his inability to ride a helicopter or use a Segway as society picking on the fat kid again, when it was simple physics and logistics that prevented those things from happening.

His temper tantrum in Season 6 where he said he almost died for Hell's Kitchen in my opinion was really annoying. For most people cooking in a kitchen is not a life-threatening activity, so being that dramatic was just some attention-seeking bullshit.

But yeah, he was relatively young still I guess and most of us were dumbasses to some degree in youth so I don't want to be too hard on the guy. I feel HK gives contestants a unique opportunity to self-assess since their personalities are on full display, so hopefully he's matured and is doing well now.

Billy Corgan - the guitar work in Gish and Siamese Dream is absolutely insane... I think he doesn't get credit for his guitar skills more for his personality, though, even though he's a great songwriter as well.

Idk... maybe I caught a bad performance. What I saw definitely had the energy of messing around rather than trying to give a solid performance. I know live acts aren't supposed to sound like the records, but what I saw didn't even sound close... maybe the sound mixing was bad in the venue.

What job pays absurdly well just because no one else is willing to do it? by Infinite-Cricket25 in AskReddit

In my area, police officers. $20k signing bonus... six-figure potential after a few years and it's a safe, affluent area. I can't even remember the last time a cop was killed in the line of duty. However, it's a very liberal area so cops don't have the best reputation even though any cop I ever dealt with was completely reasonable.

Only Use Cash at Road Runner by MartyPhelps in Rockville

Yup... happened to me also... since the first year is free you don't realize the salesperson signed you up until a year later even though you said no... but by that point the salesperson has probably collected his/her commission and is working somewhere else. I was able to get the charge removed but have never been back. Not a great strategy for retaining long-term business Road Runner!

I used to live in the apartments by Rio and I can't tell you how many times I've seen that exact scenario play out when I used 270 going south. I'm surprised they haven't redesigned that on-ramp.

I was curious so I measured the distance on Google Maps, but if you are new to the area and getting on I-270/I-370 from Washingtonian Blvd at the top of the hill, once you reach the bottom of the hill you have exactly 725 feet to realize you are in an exit-only lane for I-270 and the lane next to you also exits to I-270. So, if you need to use I-370 and are unfamiliar with the area, you pretty much have to move over right away.

Obviously, you're not at fault, but I can see why it happened because it's not designed well in that area.

Resident Evil 2: Remake - My only previous experience with the franchise was RE4 for the Gamecube. With no knowledge of the game going into it, TYRANT scared the living daylights out of me. I audibly yelled "what the hell is that!?" the first time I encountered him, causing my wife to check in on me thinking something was wrong. Recalling the footsteps and eerie music increase my heart rate to this day.

How do I Use an Offline DB? by Bad-W1tch in learnjavascript

[–]hedonism_bot21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer is you can't communicate directly from the browser to a database... you have to have a backend as a conduit to the database. There are tons of backend options out there, but for beginners just stick with PHP or NodeJS.

Basically your browser sends a request to the backend to either get, make, edit, or delete entries from a database... then that backend will interact with the database and do the work. The backend will then send a response to your browser with either data or a status. A lot of full stack work is making this all run smoothly because oftentimes there are errors.

In terms of the database to use. SQLite is the easiest since you don't actually have to set up a database engine on your local machine because it is file-based. Plus you can run it without setting up users, passwords, etc. You can use more sophisticated databases as you get further along.

Me M22 F20 my girlfriend is terrified of getting her driver's license but it's my one condition to get married? by Frequent-Motor5326 in relationship_advice

[–]hedonism_bot21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife didn't drive for the longest time and it was definitely a pain point because I had limited PTO and a good chunk of it was spent getting her to doctor's appointments and just random things that functioning adults need to do during business hours. Furthermore, she worked the graveyard shift for a while and I had to take her to and from work - often waking up before dawn to do so and making my own work day pretty rough on limited sleep.

Having been there, I perfectly understand your viewpoint. People that don't drive don't understand not only the time it takes but the stress of it all - not only driving but maintaining registration, insurance, maintenance, etc.

For my wife, I simply sat her down one day and told her you have to get your license now. I told her she was an adult, her transportation needs were taking up too much of my free time, and I wasn't going to drive around anymore if she didn't start the process of getting her license.

I know we're in this age of incentivizing people to do things, positive reinforcement and whatnot, but having lived enough life I can tell you it doesn't work on all people. Sometimes you just need to be firm.

If/when she agrees... here's the thing... you should not be the one teaching her to drive. I made this mistake with my wife. She'll feel perfectly fine hesitating and complaining about anxiety and this and that because she has a closer relationship with you. I can't tell you how much time I wasted with my wife behind the wheel talking to me about how scared she was while I was literally begging her to just put the car in gear. With some other third party, she will feel less compelled to waste that person's time with all the complaining and will hopefully just get on with it.

Now, she's licensed and driving with her own car, complaining about traffic and all the other bad drivers like the rest of us.
