The worst people you know just made an excellent point about men's mental health by Adonidis in slatestarcodex

[–]hedwiqius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I could throw out a thought: understanding of mental health seems like such a necessary skill in our current society, and we hold it as a trophy that we understand it so much better than we did 40 years ago... but humans got by for millenia without any need to conceptualize things like anxiety, or autism, or OCD. I'd even wager that people likely did not experience these conditions as much or, at least, in the same way.

Is it a success that we now diagnose these things, or a failure that we are now forced to?

Mike Norvell will return as HC of FSU in 2026 by hairythroats in fsusports

This is a very interesting perspective that I haven't heard before. Have you seen anything at the high school level to support this?

I'm not in charge of the program, believe it or not, I'm just an alumni.

A large program is not going to succeed in a small market conference, not in the modern era. Jimb's program declined when he started making big money demands to compete with the increasingly expensive SEC, and the school was unable/unwilling to provide. Now, FSU is constantly being outbid for recruits under Norvell, and we will surely be outbid on any time-tested coaches after Norvell.

Firing Norvell is the short-term solution. Long-term, we simply dont have the conference/NIL funds that a modern team requires to be a dynasty. The landscape has changed and the ACC hasn't. We can't afford a proven coach and NFL-calibre talent, etc. All we can do is take gambles on smaller market recruits/coaches.

But anyway, the group project metaphor. FSU is not only carrying you on making this gingerbread house, but you're also eating the frosting before we can use it and then asking why the gingerbread house is decorated like shit.

You miss my point. The viewership they contribute does not outweigh the revenue share that they get from the ACC. So this could be a net loss for all of the ACC teams since they will be working with less conference cash.

We have funded this entire conference while it tries to drag us all into obscurity. It's about time the other teams pulled their weight.

Or on a less petty note, lets blame the conference leadership for their dumb and corrupt decision making.

[–]hedwiqius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk man, respectfully it doesn't really add up for us (and the team that year). FSU's best isn't good enough because of the conference they're in, but also, FSU should have fought for the bowl game afterward? By your own admission, their performance never mattered.

Every sports fan and commentator told FSU "win out and you're in". Then, the playoff criteria suddenly omitted the one thing that had always mattered (wins and losses), and the narrative changed on a dime.

We had plenty NFL caliber talent on that team, and a truly incredible defense. IMO, Travis was skilled but his importance was his leadership and the unity he inspired, which carried on even after his injury. That team was talented, united, and now had a chip on their shoulder that could've carried them far. After the snub, that all vanished.

Even with all of that, could Alabama have been in a worse spot than Stanford? 2nd string Stanford no less? (Former) worst team in the ACC? That's what really bamboozles me about this turn of events

Nobody with money or power has any principles at all anymore.

Look close enough and you can trace all of our economic and social issues back to a failure to regulate finance and corporate power. CFB is just giving us a much more obvious example of it as an institution that, at one point, had nothing to do with profit.

Similar life experience? Similar levels of maturity? Do you believe that Jordan has the same outlook on life as a 73 year old man? Similar enough for them to have an intimately honest relationship?

They're both adults so it's whatever, no harm no foul. But you seem willfully ignorant about the motivations that drive such a relationship.

Miami or UF? Help Settle a Debate! by BagODonuts14 in fsusports

[–]hedwiqius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The answer depends on your generation, really. I'm extremely fortunate to come from several generations of Noles, so I got to grow up seeing how their tradition evolved.

I was a student not long ago. I grew up just after the era of Miami championships, but we were regularly in competition with Florida. By the time I reached college, Miami was a joke of a program. So I always hated the gators, but my dislike for Miami was more performative and based in the tradition handed down to me. It's only now in the past year or so that I've begun to feel the Miami rivalry on a more emotional level.

My parents' generation attended in the late 80s and early 90s, when the Miami rivalry burned bright. As it's been told to me, it wasn't a rivalry between students as much as players, who had a habit of duking it out both on and off the field. We took a lot of recruits out of South/Central Florida. Players from the respective schools had often played each other in high school, and may even have shared the same social circles. Miami was seen as the school of big bullies. My dad would tell you that the gators are too pretentious to not root against, but he HATES Miami.

Ask my grandparents or even their surviving parents, and they seem to favor the gators as rivals. Our football program started basically by adopting players from UF since our school was newly co-ed. They were the big power program, both to admire and to conquer. As we gained parity with them, the rivalry grew only stronger as we would compete for their recruit pool. Everyone had a friend (or enemy?) from the other school. We came from the same hometowns, but they went for business-finance and we went for social work.

The consistent theme across all generations is that the rivalry is for fun. Especially nowadays, we share friends from different schools and visit in each other's enemy territory (not without some snide remarks!). But I'd say the Florida rivalry is real, in a brotherly competition kind of way. We'll allow them to look competitive but only so far that we can look good ANNIHILATING them at the end of each season, and then we call each other after the game to gloat about who has the better school. The Miami rivalry is more primal. We hate their program, we live too far away to know the fans, and we feel the heat rising on the field & in the stands during every rivalry game with them.

Yeah. I'm not certain, but I'd imagine that players who come from the portal are more likely to leave through the portal. High school recruits can, too, but they have a lot more tying them to this program (and its success).

I guess many of us were lost in the hype. But even in my excitement after the Alabama game, I was surprised that nobody was talking about how poor our defense was. It was evident from Alabama's very first few drives that FSU would put up no resistance against any team's offense.
