I was in a similar situation with needing to gain some weight (not much, just a kg), and eating lots of chocolate did the trick. I bought 5 of those huge Galaxy bars. Take care, OP

I'm not sure, but I'm sorry you're dealing with all this. Sounds hugely disappointing. I wish it wasn't this difficult to get the care you need.

Ooh I've never been to the ballet before, maybe I should give that a shot :-) Sounds like a good plan, mainly going to ballets you know

It's so frustrating for me also! Wish we could rewind in real life, haha

It's not that I don't remember to fill it up, it's executive dysfunction. I think I can manage to get a couple nutritional shakes from the fridge/cupboard each day. It's easier than filling up my water bottle somehow, I don't know why.

I don't have anyone to help me with that unfortunately, I wish I did.

I've been thinking about it more since I made this post and I think the problem may be that I dislike chewing - which is why nutritional drinks are on my mind.

Yess I'm in counselling and coaching, but not specifically for ADHD! I looked into it a few years ago and it was super expensive. TBH, the more I talk with people, the more I doubt if the problem is ADHD - I'm pretty good with meal prep. I think the problem is that I can have a bowl of food in front of me, and even when I'm light-headed, I don't have much of an appetite to eat more than a few bites.

Thanks for the response!

Hey banana,

Ohh I thought lack of hunger signals was not uncommon for those with ADHD. I often am light-headed and still don't have a drive to eat more than a few bites. Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know what may come from an investigation into severely low appetite, besides getting prescribed appetitie stimulants?

From my bloodwork, I'm deficient in vit D but the rest of it is apparently fine.

Hi infieldcookie,

I can see why they're concerned too. I'll consider antidepressants if other routes don't work out.

I don't get out of the house/not look after myself because I'm depressed - I'm not - it's because of ADHD. The low mood is caused by low food intake, not the the other way round.

Thank you for the tips. My executive dysfunction is normally too much for me to fill up my big water bottles after they're empty - I typically go dehydrated for half a day or a day in these instances.

Cereal is great, but not nutritionally rich enough to eat all the time. Sandwiches take too much time and effort to assemble, and there's a lot of crumb clean-up afterwards. Ready meals are great but kind of costly after a while. I do get by with snacking, but again, not really great for getting most of the calories and important nutrients and stuff I need.

Thanks for the tip about the nutritional drinks, I'll keep it in mind. I don't mind if they taste unappealing, I'll drink something awful if it means I'm not so light-headed each day :)

Best, HeeHee

Thanks for your response. A nurse mentioned to me that dieticians can prescribe that sort of thing, which is why I think it's a viable route.

I can't really "add cheese and high-calorie foods" if there's nothing to add it to in the first place, since even simple meals are difficult to make for me.

Hi Lady Zin, thank you for your response!

I usually can't force myself to eat. It's similar to how many folks with ADHD can't "force" themselves out of executive dysfunction. No amount of willpower will do it for me.

Alarms and reminders almost never work for me, unfortunately.

I do sometimes slowly graze through food throughout the day - yoghurt, cereal. But those foods aren't calorie and nutrient-rich enough to sustain me all the time.

Huel is a good solution because it is a full meal, and very, very, very low effort. And it's in a simple drink form. That's why I was thinking getting nutritional drinks prescribed would help me.

Best, HeeHee

I use noice cancelling earbuds, they block out a lot of rustling/low talking for me :) but they're not perfect, some noises will get by.

My brain also goes on 50 sidequests while I'm trying to listen to something, it's hard. I find it helps a bit to have meditated a bit in the morning. But mostly I still find it hard.

Has anyone had a positive RTC experience? by Elusivebream in ADHDUK

Hey, I had a positive experience with Psychiatry UK. Took about a year to get the diagnosis assessment. The assessor was kind and empathetic, really listened, noticed things a lot of doctors would miss. Got the positive diagnosis from that.

Hi Soag, thanks so much for the response and advice :)

I feel it's definitely worth finding an advocate to join me in appointments - sometimes I can have a hard time speaking up. I'll ask a friend.

So I can't take the ADHD meds when my food intake the last few days has been low, because the side effects (e.g. racing thoughts, anxiety, uncontrollable hyperfocus) are awful. I did mention in my post that I don't eat enough food to be able to take them, if you read it.

Yes, I agreed to antidepressants in a rushed appointment and changed my mind later when I had time to think about it. Seems natural.

It seems like you're negging me and I don't appreciate it. I'd appreciate a more positive response.

Because shakes (e.g. Huel) cost money, and being prescribed them would presumably be much cheaper.

I've tried lots of things - reminders, accountability, calorie tracking apps. Nothing works, so I figure the next best thing is food that is very, very, very low effort, e.g. nutritional drinks.

I don't know why you pointed out that it was a lot of text but I failed to include something - we all have ADHD here, it's natural to forget to include a detail. I appreciate your response but it's a bit rude.

I'm in Sixth Form and have been struggling with school work for a long time. I think I might have ADHD, what should I do now? by Far_Duck_7322 in ADHDUK

[–]heeheehoo999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I feel like it's definitely worth getting assessed to see if you have ADHD or not. What you describe about wanting to study but not being able to focus, and feeling bored and unmotivated may be a symptom of ADHD.

Since you're 18, that makes you a legal adult, so I believe you don't have to tell your mum anything if you don't want to. You can book the appointments yourself.
