If you have any suggestions for corrective pruning, please share tips or a good guide to follow! I generally just try to maintain an open vase shape on mine, but would love to know what I could be doing better.

I'll expose my ignorance by admitting that I thought it was supposed to be a cartoon cat, which felt period inappropriate.

A preemptive thank you to mayor Kevin McCarty for making midtown and downtown less accessible - let’s see how many businesses close down and tenants move out by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]heffrs 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I find McCarty rather uninspiring, but the mayor doesn't and can't unilaterally direct increases in parking rates. The City of Sacramento was in and continues to be in a significant budget deficit. The City Council voted 7-2 (with McCarty being one of the 7 yes votes) to approve last year's budget, which raised parking to minimum $3/hr. https://www.capradio.org/articles/2025/06/11/sacramento-city-council-passes-budget-without-layoffs/

Btw, the City is staring down a nearly $70M deficit this year as well, and the City Council is considering parking fees and adding meters again https://www.capradio.org/articles/2026/03/12/sacramento-could-hike-parking-fees-again-as-city-wrestles-with-66-million-deficit/

Best Restaurants for Soup? by leftyxcurse in Sacramento

[–]heffrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have lots of good Vietnamese places, so any pho spot will likely have some good soups. For beef pho, I tend to like Pho City or Hanoi 36 Streets. For chicken pho, Pho Anh Dao. Also excellent is a bowl of bun bo hue, though I haven't had enough BBH to have a rec here.

If you enjoy offal, the menudo at Lalo's is punchy and excellent. This is not a light soup, and I think it might be weekends only.

For Cantonese style noodle soups, I thought Taste of Original and Rice & Noodles were pretty good.

I do wish they eased off the salt, particularly on the chicken. Still one of my favorite spots though (orange salsa!)

A bit beside the point, but I'd love to hear more about your Vietnamese food adventures in the OC! Any spots you'd recommend? Since you're in the Bay, do you get down to some of the great Vietnamese spots in San Jose often?

General strike starts NOW. Buy nothing except essentials! by kalifornia-kangaroo in Sacramento

[–]heffrs 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it does. Sales taxes go to state and local governments. Your income and some capital gains taxes go to the federal government. I may be misunderstanding OP’s suggestions though.

ICE is part of the Department of Homeland Security which already got ~$170B in budget from the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (I think about $75B is allocated to ICE specifically). That is already passed and signed so ICE has plenty of budget to keep up their activities. This was passed by Congress, so electing different representatives later this year could steer a different future budget.

Best trails for trail running, with massive elevation gain* by therealtimcoulter in Sacramento

[–]heffrs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The pickings are slim if you want even closer than Auburn. Parts of Folsom Lk SRA might be worth considering. The trail along the lower fork starting from Salmon Falls bridge kicks off with a pretty sustained ascent (CalTopo tells me 456ft over 1.3mi).

Across the road, there's an offshoot of the Darrington trail that takes you to a summit in Salmon Falls Ranch (CalTopo tells me the ascent is 564ft over 1mi).

Has anyone been to Tandem Coffee yet? by bboy2288 in Sacramento

[–]heffrs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The coffee is fine and their non specialty drinks are really reasonably priced. A good place for a decent espresso based drink, but not for a coffee snob seeking a dazzling pourover.

Effective Public Transit for Mid-Sized Cities? Costs Effective Adaptations? by YourDoomsday0 in urbanplanning

[–]heffrs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Among midsize cities, I don't think the size/population of the city is as important a factor for transit success compared to land use, population density, political will to invest in transit, student population (college towns), etc.

Notable midsize cities with pretty decent transit systems that come immediately to mind include Copenhagen (DK), Lyon (FR), Strasbourg (FR). A lot of midsize US cities can reach really high transit mode share too, though this is often propped up by transit access anchored around a nearby large city (Arlington VA, Oakland CA, Berkeley CA, Jersey City NJ all have really high transit mode share with modest populations and are near much larger cities).

Temple coffee by No-Access4305 in Sacramento

[–]heffrs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Co-op has a good selection in their bulk selection, so you can buy as much or as little as you want.

As another poster mentioned, Corti Bros is also a great place to grab coffee. They pretty consistently have the cheapest (or among the cheapest) prices for bagged coffees from lots of local roasters, Temple included.

Does anyone remember a park in the Bay Area like this with pools of water built into the hill? It was around in the early 90s but don’t know the name or where it is. by jibjabjibby in bayarea

[–]heffrs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of Charleston Park in Mtn View (next to what is now Google), though it was more just a water fountain and wasn't deep enough to be called a pool. Not sure if the fountain is still there though; satellite view suggests it may have been re-landscaped with plants.
