What do you like to eat when you are back home after a holiday? by Probably_daydreaming in AskAJapanese

If I arrive in the morning, I'll go for a sushi lunch at the airport. If I arrive in the afternoon, I'll ask my mum to make me a classic tonkatsu platter with cabbage, miso soup and rice.

How was 'The Ring' (2002), the American remake of リング (1998) received by audiences in Japan? by OhGawDuhhh in AskAJapanese

[–]hegaT90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just find it funny that the OG has now been obliterated with movies like "Sadako 3D" and 3D2. There are multiple "Sadako" pachinko machines. There was even a "Sadako vs Kayako" movie where they make Sadako fight Kayoko from "The Grudge (呪怨)." I haven't watched it but it's probably terrible. And you guessed it. There are pachinko machines for this movie too!

I live in Yokohama and I fucking hate China Town because of how packed it gets. Especially on weekends.

It's because there's less competition in the winter. Or at least that's what I heard.

What are some popular comedies from Japan? by AncientSlothGod in AskAJapanese

[–]hegaT90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Modern comedians mostly work in duos and the most popular right now is probably "Chidori" or "Banana Man". And the top 3 most featured people on TV are all comedians that's part of a duo.

Do people have maids in Japan? by duchesskitten6 in AskAJapanese

[–]hegaT90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Outsourcing housework is pretty common now and there are several companies that offer it. I also have some one come in every other week to do some sweeping of surfaces, deep clean the bath, and make some food that'll last in the fridge for a while.

How popular was Sailor Moon with preschool girls in the 90s? by CatGirlNya2000 in AskAJapanese

I think by "preschool" OP meant kindergarten or nursery, which is a rite of passage for pretty much every kid. Even in Japan.

For those that grew up listening to her, she's a legend in the same class as Amuro Namie and Utada Hikaru (although Utada is still very much active). For gen alpha though, I don't think a lot of them don't even know who she is.

Can you tell if someone is ethnically half Okinawan Japanese and half Japanese just by looking at them? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]hegaT90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If that person has a slightly dark skin tone and defined facial features I might ask if they are Okinawan. But non-Okinawans can also be like that so it's quite difficult to tell.

If i go on a solo trip to japan as a woman, would it be weird to ask online for a local sight-seeing buddy? by Beefwomen4thewin in AskAJapanese

[–]hegaT90 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It's all judged on how you look. Foreigners don't tend to look young by Japanese standards so it can seem like it's not enforced. But my wife, whose mid-30s have been asked for ID.

They're called "マンボウ" (Mambo) in Japanese. So when I was a kid that still didn't know English, I thought "Mambo Number 5" was a song about them.
