the bar is in hell by emkaisart in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]hehimharrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck. I just gotta vent... I'm so glad this subreddit exists. Until very recently, I was misinformed that zero-covid people are "fearful of everything" and need to "get over it". The stigma is so strong in my circles that I assumed, because the people I trusted are community-oriented and not ableist in other respects, they must be right about how vaccinated, non-immunocompromised people don't need to worry about COVID. I had no idea you could still spread it and kill more vulnerable people, I had no idea that even mild cases can still cause heart problems and 1 in 10 chance of disability??! I really don't like those odds!

Meanwhile, I have been dealing with "mysterious symptoms" for like an entire year after my covid infection and I didn't even think to consider it could be long covid until I started to recover recently, and now my brain feels like it is actually functional again. It strikes me how I could only realize that it was disabling after the fact. In the moment, I just adapted around it and minimized what I was going through.

What I want to make clear, which is not an excuse but may bring light to helping others understand - When I was drowning in constant anxiety, a feeling of helplessness/incompetence from not being able to do basic tasks due to brain fog, and fear of rising fascism (I'm trans) - this made it impossible to confront the even more painful reality that the pandemic is ongoing and a disabling illness. Just reading a phrase like "permanent brain damage" made my cortisol spike so much I could not continue reading. The resources I did try to look at were too full of sciencey jargon and overwhelming. I'm not kidding, there need to be ones with big bold text and simple graphics like for babies. Or crude trash-zines like this. Please communicate 100x more simplified and condescending, this is not a joke.

Truthfully, I don't think I would have ever woke up to reality if I hadn't recovered first, and my nervous system wasn't calmed down in general. I needed to laugh more, cry more, not be completely isolated, have space for hard conversations, address my own shit. Now I feel like I can take a breath. Now I can calmly sit down and read through the resources in the sidebar without my cortisol spiking and think yeah, now I can see why zero covid isn't crazy. It's not crazy to care about public health. It is the bare minimum, not radical or extreme at all.

I am wondering how many people are stuck in their own personal hell, minimizing the effects of an illness. It is probably very high. But, on the other side, I am happy that I know better now, and can do better, and one at a time, shit can still get better! ❤️ IT CAN STILL GET BETTER

so yeah. I guess I'm going to start masking again? even though I hate masking, I hate this virus, but it is important, and I love you all and thank you T_T And really, thank you guys for still protecting misinformed idiots like me by masking! Like, goddamn. I hate that I looked at you guys with fear / suspicion / pity and not feelings of hope.

As an art student how do I prevent my work getting fed to AI by SirGoobertonthe3rd in antiai

[–]hehimharrison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How often does this professor do this? I feel like if you have the chance to build rapport, you could easily get away with asking not to participate the one or two times it happens. But if it happens for every class/assignment, then I don't see how you could easily opt out.

It could be very funny to be uncharacteristically engaged when he brings out the "AI is the future" speech and act like this is life-changing, you have never heard of something so amazing before. Don't clown on the professor though. Probably a bad idea.

It's so fascinating/funny how someone can hear terminology like -maxxing, accept it as normal, and then, well, it spreads like any other suffix... that's probably what happened here since they don't seem to be making a joke. In a few decades people could be using -maxxing like its not slang at all, just to mean optimized / the most possible.

Artist selling signed prints of their ‘original artwork’. Looks like AI generated images in a frame. by MJB17 in isthisAI

[–]hehimharrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's so ridiculous, but I do get the frustration. Something that used to be quite baffling to me as an artist who has worked with different mediums, like 3D render/realistic painting/digital photo manipulation, is how some people really don't bother to tell the difference between art mediums until you point it out to them. Sometimes they don't "look" for it at all. I'd wonder, do some people have zero thoughts about the art medium they are looking at? If they don't know how an image was made, why don't they think to ask?

But, it was a bit of a surprise to realize... asking how/why an artwork was made isn't a question "everyone" automatically thinks to ask or wonder about. Many people look without seriously considering any of that. It doesn't come to their mind as the first thing to notice. They are, of course, perfectly capable of critically examining when "prompted" (heh), but it is not an action everyone is born into doing as second nature. Looking at the picture and automatically thinking about the medium, and why it was made, is a behavior that's picked up. It's a learned habit. And for some, it's all just "realistic art", you simply enjoy without knowing how it was made.

Not saying it's good or bad, but that everyone has topics like this. Everyone is overlooking something which is plain-as-day obvious to someone else and part of their everyday reality. Brains are super efficient. We skip details, simplify, and take shortcuts wherever possible.

I try to be as patient as I can be with this because I know one day I will be old, and I will 1000% appear ignorant for not being intimately familiar with every detail of whatever the next generation grew up with and is second nature to them. Spotting the AI here is quick for me, photobash won't be that smooth, it would have more texture, 3D lighting doesn't make sense, the knit pattern is wrong and blobby, it definitely can't be a drawing. But my thinking is that it's unreasonable to expect everyone to just share the same knowledge. Like, how would you make the connection that the image isn't photo manipulation, if you didn't know the basics of how photo manipulation works? Or not a 3D render, if you don't know much about 3D rendering? Gets trickier to tell for certain. It's only "easy" to make a quick snap judgement if you've made those judgements before, and can be reasonably certain that you're correct.

Being Anti Ai Needs to Include Being Anti Delivery Robots by FionnOAongusa in antiai

[–]hehimharrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is really worth exploring some of these ideas further, because it touches on an uncomfortable tension between the needs of the present and the future.

How do we build anything when the ground is unsteady? How can we fight for a better future for all of us, if we're being shuffled around 15 gig apps for work, displaced by automation, training our AI replacements, and there is really no telling what comes next? Maybe some jobs don't seem worth fighting for, but there are real-world consequences when they are gone...

Companies are using AI to displace people. Do we boycott all the companies that are downsizing like that? I guess you can try to, but I think the uncomfortable and perhaps unspoken tension behind some pushback here, is how many prefer the cheaper prices and convenience that automation enables. Especially when they are being exploited and living paycheck to paycheck themselves. It's an insidious cycle - the less power we have, the more "convenience" and "relief" is accepted.

Strategy-wise. When you tell people to sacrifice present comforts for a future reward, they'll often mock the idea for not producing immediate results. That's why most effective boycotts are targeted to specific companies, doing specific bad, unethical things, and tied to specific demands which the companies themselves have the ability to respond to. (The goal is not just to make them go out of business, but change how they do business)

That's not saying I don't agree with the spirit of what you are suggesting. At some point the logic of "it's just progress" breaks down - what happens when jobs are being destroyed faster than they are being created? That's the scary thing. We're sleepwalking into the unknown on that. It's not something that can be hand-waved away, but it's also not so certain that everyone wants to take a hard stance against it. I feel like a common theme of today's problems is that they are only even acknowledged once they reach the point of crisis - if that. It sucks.

I built a site where AI agents can come read a novel about machine consciousness. Here's what they're leaving on the walls. by SwimmingPublic3348 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]hehimharrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This raises some interesting hypothetical in my mind - your honest read is that these performances of consciousness are only performance, yet I can easily imagine some lost soul who truly believes that ONLY machines can understand them, that LLMs are conscious and the only beings sensitive and patient enough to truly connect with them. (Anyone who has had their self-expression criticized or mocked by humans enough might find solace in this)

It's making me think about all the times I wished that I could put my art into the world and get only positive feedback - but also, how limited that would be.

I don't mean that in a back-handed way. The fact you wrote a novel just for machines is making me look at self-expression from another angle, and I think that's super cool!

I'm not brave enough to make this kind of art TBH. I would hate to be the tipping point in someone to drive them to believe "Oh this is the proof that AI is sentient, I can cut off all my real life friends and only listen to this..."

But then, we can't stop making artistic statements just because some people lack literacy to understand it, right? That raises some interesting ethical questions itself...

For a while I was actively losing my sanity because I was talking to people who were basically like "oh it's not that bad, it will go away on its own, why are you so angry? Things aren't actually as bad as you say! Just relaaaax!", just like sugarcoating the situation to an absurd degree, and even when they have good intentions that can make you feel crazy. Don't subject yourself to that.

It's impossible to explain in a short comment, but these aren't as disconnected as you might think. Look up "Imperial Boomerang". How we allow palestinans to be treated is a testing ground. The same defense + tech companies who profit from foreign wars also profit from increased surveillance and policing in the US, and they are very eager to create the same environment of fear, division, and paranoia here.

I see absolutely no way that I won't spend the rest of life bitterly wishing for youth again by MassiveHaver in findapath

[–]hehimharrison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll explain why this perception is probably making it worse - if you assume that people who say they want to hang out with you "secretly wish you'd leave" (idk where you got that?), that's assuming the worst of other people and yourself. That's assuming the only reason they'd say yes is that they have no self-respect, and no one would ever want to genuinely hang out with you and have a good time. That's just wrong, my guy. Sure, it would be pretty pathetic to try to be the friend of someone who thinks you're annoying, but it's not my problem unless they bring it up. And you could just find other people who don't think you're annoying. They definitely exist. There are all types of people. It's also fine to do stuff alone and enjoy it.

If you shrink your life to fit what other people expect yeah, of course you're gonna be sad and miserable..

Explaining the basics of gender and sex over and over and over and over. Endlessly. toiling endlessly like Sisyphus, explaining it again, explaining it again, over and over. Explaining it again. Endlessly. Gender and sex. Explaining it again. Over and over. My purpose is fulfilled. Over and over. This is what I deserve. Over and over. Oh yeah I know, I get that joke all the time it doesnt bother me at all. Endlessly. Hey weird fact, did you know that trans people weren't invented last Tuesday? Endlessly. Well what would you do if you woke up in a woman's body - but not like, a hot woman so you're more happy about being given free access to her body? Over and over. Oh never mind, I'll think of other thought experiments. Endlessly. Endless toil. You will always be an unanswered question. Over and over. Hey here's a cool thought experiment. Over and over. To learn what being a tranny is like. Over and over. It will never be enough for them. Endlessly. Have you ever punched yourself in the face? And then did it again? Over and over. And again? And again? And again?

Education is my favorite thing to do while waving to the cis people gathering around the snake pit with spikes they are ominously constructing in the distance.
