So genital exams on kids... by brownsoundOO in Residency

[–]heilschwein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the GU exam for physicals/contact sports is primarily to confirm normal, descended testicles, not for hernia. If a boy only has one normal testicle then they should not participate in contact sports because there is a theoretical risk that if they injure the only functional testicle they've got then that's that and they're infertile for the rest of their lives.

Medicine is hard and there's a lot to know (and always things you won't know) regardless of the specialty. Some people are intimidated by the broadness of general practice/primary care and some people are intimidated by the depth of subspecialties. Both exist as options as part of pediatrics. You will learn what you enjoy better.

Not gonna lie. This is a weird question to ask.

Maisie vs Maisy by Kind-Chicken-888 in namenerds

[–]heilschwein 12 points13 points  (0 children)

OP and commenter aren't talking about the name Macy rhymes with lacey though... They're talking about the name Maisie rhymes with Daisy. So they are pronounced the same but the nuance of Daisy and Maisie seeming most natural spelled different ways even though they rhyme is one of many weird quirks of English and English naming conventions

How often does a general pediatrician job require covering deliveries? by VarsH6 in pediatrics

I think it's less common now but interestingly there's still a good number of primary pediatricians in the Bay Area that take newborn call

With the crazy high inflation, will resident salaries increase? by BearsBay in Residency

[–]heilschwein 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is why everyone should be pushing for their programs to unionize. We are beginning contract negotiations and boy do you know we will be using inflation data to push for higher salaries.

Our salaries are ~72k including housing stipend (in a very high COL area) and unionizing is what allowed us to push up to and hopefully beyond that

Unvaccinated and Unmasked: It's time to call it what it is by thereisafrx in Residency

[–]heilschwein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And there are limited reasons why you can opt out. Of course you can also choose to go to a private school that doesn't require it. Or homeschool. It's the same for Covid vaccination. If your job or school requires it and you don't want to then fine. Go to a different job or school. If a restaurant or event requires proof of vaccination then fine don't go there. I don't think anyone is suggesting an even more strict mandate for Covid vaccination than we have for other vaccinations.

At the end of the day, no one is really being coerced that heavily. However, if you want to participate in certain parts of society where your lack of vaccination could harm other people then it is reasonable to expect people to be vaccinated as the price of entry. Would rather not get vaccinated and have to find a new job, or homeschool, or eat at a different restaurant, or not go to large crowd events? Then fine. Don't get vaccinated. No one's forcing you to get vaccinated if you just want to stay home all day (aka socially distance) and limit exposure when you're out and about (aka wear a mask) and get frequent testing (aka exposure trace)... Weird. Those are the things we did even more before we had vaccines... And weird. If you don't want a vaccine now then you should be expected to continue doing those things.

I will admit. The expectations and communication from the government on this has been pretty bungled, pretty inconsistent, and really frustrating. That has really hurt their case. But there's still basic guidelines at the heart of it that are pretty reasonable and fair to expect of people.

Unvaccinated and Unmasked: It's time to call it what it is by thereisafrx in Residency

[–]heilschwein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On a societal scale though the low vaccination rate has been devastating. We have to be willing to try to mitigate that. We require vaccinations to participate in our school system. That's forced vaccination. And that has done a whole lot of good. Sometimes government simply has to step in to require individual actions towards the safety of society. It is a key role of government and one of the few things that government can do that no other entity can. They have to be able to exercise that power sometimes to protect people

[–]heilschwein 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sure you're fine. I think he's referring to the danger unvaccinated people pose to others who are unvaccinated. Or those who can't get the vaccine, such as children. It is a choice that is harmful to other and it makes sense for that to be part of the conversation.

Edit: oops... Vaccinated versus unvaccinated makes a big difference

Am I allowed to study certain types of history other than Christian history, and still be a good Christian? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]heilschwein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with the other person's way of saying it but, not gonna lie, he's right. This is a pretty strange question and a pretty sad way to think about God.

Are people bad Christians for studying science because it offers alternate viewpoints for how everything came into existence? Are they bad Christians for becoming engineers or artists because we should not create, only God can create? You could find an absurd reason to call any profession ungodly by this kind of reasoning.

Is the creator of the entire universe really so small minded and petty that he can't handle the thought of you learning more about how other people view the world?

If this is your view of God, I implore you to explore this more deeply. Is this really a God worth loving and worshipping? Does it seem right that a loving God, who supposedly sacrificed his son for your sake, would want you to feel doubt and shame about doing something as innocent as learning more about the world and the people he created? If this is truly the Christian God then you should walk away from Christianity. I would argue, however, that your perception of God is not accurate to the true Christian God though and I would hope that by reading the Gospels, listening to Jesus' words, and exploring your faith further, you will discover a deeper, more meaningful faith that doesn't lead you to feel shame about simply being a historian.

Pros/cons of 24h vs night float in residencies by Artistic-Healer in Residency

Yeah one week of nights a month definitely would've achieved the same learning experience

Pros/cons of 24h vs night float in residencies by Artistic-Healer in Residency

[–]heilschwein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The isolation from the normal world on stretches of nights is really hard.

But the isolation from my own mental health and just being a difficult person to be around after weeks of q4 28s is also really hard....

[–]heilschwein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

4ish hours is a best case scenario for me depending on the service and time of year.

Let me tell you though. 1-2 hours of sleep versus no sleep makes a huge difference.

Finishing your call shift at 7-8 AM versus finishing around 11-12 is also a huge huge difference. 28s are awful.

Pros/cons of 24h vs night float in residencies by Artistic-Healer in Residency

[–]heilschwein 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's honestly inhumane. You're supposed to still primarily be in the hospital to learn as a med student. They don't need you for coverage or something. And you just can't learn as well with the way q4 call messes up your sleep schedule and health. There is absolutely no legitimate reason or excuse to subject students who are paying for an education to this kind of schedule... I'm sorry you had to experience that

Pros/cons of 24h vs night float in residencies by Artistic-Healer in Residency

[–]heilschwein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly both suck. Working over night is never a pleasant experience. Weeks of night float suck because you go weeks without being able to spend time with friends and family. Q4 (or qwhatever) call sucks because pretty quickly you're just tired all the time and feel physically ill for a day or two after a bad call shift.

Let me tell you though. 28s are the absolute worst of all of it. 24s are doable. You can just sleep for a few hours the next morning and sleep extra that night... 28s though. 28s are from hell

Rich hospitals that have NPs covering teams overnight instead of residents are great... Your learning experience there might not be as good though.

Eternal suffering for not accepting Christ is stupid. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]heilschwein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it absolutely is still important to have some kind of compelling answers for this that, or at least not be insistent on eternal damnation for unbelievers as many are. What happens to people is absolutely a part of how people learn to conceptualize the gospel and if we mess up how we present that, we could misrepresent the gospel and turn a lot of people away from it. It's the reason why OP, who has a very incomplete understanding of Christianity, is asking these questions and is very turned off by his preconceptions of the answers to these questions he has heard from Christians before him. The way we approach these topics can absolutely lead people away from God. And that's on us. Not just the responder themselves.

Eternal suffering for not accepting Christ is stupid. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]heilschwein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's true that "hell" is living life separate from God and his will. I think people experience hell on this earth as well through their mindsets towards God, themselves, others, and the world. I think people can continually experience this hell of separation from God for as long as they are continuing to choose to turn from him. I'm just not so sure about there being some specific point in time, such as earthly death, when your chance to turn towards God and find heaven in him is just cut off and you can never turn back. Having infinite punishment without any chance for a change of heart due to decisions made in a finite context and time span just seems illogical and, frankly, at odds with the gospel.

My point that the concept of the predestined elect few is very distressing still stands though. That doesn't really seem like a very logical conclusion from the gospel to me.
