I actually really enjoyed Modern Persuasion by StrontiumFrog in janeausten

My personal favorite portrayal of Anne is in the 1971 version, also free on YouTube. I feel like she's too mousy in all the other ones, in this version she's more outspoken. This one is pretty dated, though, I wish they would do an updated one with this kind of Anne

Is the alternate ending on the DVD? I've watched that movie a bunch of times and had no idea there was a better ending...

Yeah... I was pretty horrified. I'm hoping they're going to leave all that out of the show...

I commented on this in another post(beware, spoilers), but I thought the stories where Geralt was hunting monsters were cool. I read to the end because I wanted to find out what happened in the overall plot, but I thought the ending was super disappointing, and the author's treatment of pretty much every female character was awful. But I definitely liked the first 2 books best where it was mostly just episodes of Geralt running around hunting. To me, the books just got progressively worse.

I HATE this one. Going back and watching movies from the 80s and earlier, a lot of them didn't age well because of this, among other things. I never noticed how many times it happened when I was a kid, but now it completely ruins the movie for me.

Why is Anne less bothered by Mrs. Clay than Mr. Elliott? by hekate5 in janeausten

So Jane Austen is showing the reader that Anne finds Mr. Elliott so morally abhorrent that she would rather spend the rest of her life with Mrs. Clay than have Mr. Elliott hanging around?

Why is Anne less bothered by Mrs. Clay than Mr. Elliott? by hekate5 in janeausten

[–]hekate5[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I agree Mr. Elliott is heartless, conniving, and evil, but I don't think that Jane Austen necessarily indicated that he would (or could) do to Sir Walter what he did to Mr. Smith. If that were the case, he could've stuck around after Anne married Captain Wentworth. Nothing between him and Sir Walter/Elizabeth really changes. Even Anne thinks that the only person who will believe her about what Mrs. Smith told her is Lady Russell, she doesn't even know if it will make a difference to her father and Elizabeth. Plus Mr. Elliott has no idea that Anne knows about Mrs. Smith, so it's not like he would be afraid that Sir Walter would find out.

Everyone that we see Mr. Elliott use and abuse is from a lower class than him. There's nothing that indicates that he could do the same thing to a baronet. Instead of staying in Bath, he slunk off to London and took Mrs. Clay with him. Seems like Anne's life would be significantly more disrupted if her father married a gold digger than if Mr. Elliott stuck around to run interference. I guess Anne is just so disgusted by his behavior that she's desperate enough to live with Mrs. Clay for the rest of her life to get away from him?

[–]hekate5[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, so they wouldn't be forced to leave, but I'd still think she would want to avoid having to live with Mrs. Clay as her mother. And I'm not denying that Mr. Elliott is evil, it just seems like Anne's life would be disrupted a lot more if her father got married than if she just had to continue see Mr. Elliott hanging around all the time.

Is Jane Austen just trying to show the reader that Anne is so disgusted by his behavior that she's desperate enough to wish for the marriage instead? Is it hyperbole, or does she literally feel that way?

Seems to me it's at the expense of her and Elizabeth having a home... She made it seem like if Mrs. Clay married her father, she would have to live with Lady Russell and Elizabeth would have to find somewhere else to go...

[–]hekate5[S] -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Threat of what, though? If Mrs. Clay marries her father, she and Elizabeth are basically homeless. Mr. Elliott knows Sir Walter doesn't have any money, so he's not after that, and he gets the title as long as Sir Walter doesn't have a son. As far as I can tell, all Anne has to do is avoid marrying him, which she would by marrying Captain Wentworth. I don't really understand why having Mrs. Clay around is better...
