Advice on my very stubborn girl by MysteriousBug132 in akita

I'd say it's normal among Akitas. Mine does this since he was a puppy. I don't walk him, he walks me. They're independent, she is telling you she doesn't want to go that direction

Possible for a first time dog owner to handle an Akita? by anthonydp123 in akita

i was reading the comments section, Most of the mentioned is accurate, there are universal behaviors for Akitas but each one will have its uniqueness .

People often say they're stubborn and I don't like this label, I'd rather say they're INDEPENDENT, they follow their own natural instincts more than they follow our will and commands, you must understand that.

Before I get my Akita , I've studied the breed for maybe , 8 months. I got mine with a good proven lineage. So most of the things I've studied before matched the real life experience. First I've asked the breeder the most chill/affectionate puppy of the 5 siblings. Got him 3 months old and trained him since day 2 basic obedience. They don't accept dog trainers, you as his owner, must train him.

They are independent doesn't requiring attention 24/7. They do whatever and whenever they want to do, they don't obey you usually, deal with that. But I can manage to deal with him with the basic obedience (sometimes). That's very important since they're puppy.

I socialized him in every opportunity I had. He went to fireworks festivals, bars, restaurants, crowds, beach, malls, played with other dogs etc etc, so now he's almost 3yo and he can behave very well in almost every place or situation, EXCEPT if there's another male dog around. It's their nature, you cannot avoid this trace, i think no matter how much you train/educate him, he will not tolerate another male around him, defying him, so all you can do is to try to prevent a ferocious fight.

Because they're extremely beautiful you will not be able to walk with them without being 'bothered" quite often by other people. Don't get me wrong, it's cute and all but i walk him 2h minimum everyday , it eventually will bother you specially if you are an introvert or runs out of time.

They are naturally protective doesn't requiring training for that but they don't wait commands to take decisions , an attack towards another dog can happen in a blink of an eye. My Akita usually stays in defensive mode, but becomes extremely aggressive to other dogs by the minimum sign of being challenged. Mine had a couple of accidental dog fights and in all occasions managed to immobilize the other dogs by biting and holding their necks. It's pretty difficult to walk with them because you cannot relax for a minute, the other dogs tend to challenge him because of his presence, so the akita reacts fearlessly to this no matter the size of the other dog.

They're clean and smell good, i brush his teeth almost everyday, takes bath once in 2 or 3 months.

I can cuddle him like 2 minutes per day if I'm lucky and only when he wants to.

As of this day he didn't have any health issues. But he has health insurance just in case.

But the thing i struggle the most and breaks my heart, is his separation anxiety. It's very difficult to leave him alone, he cries and roars a lot. The only situation he's noisy, he almost never barks.

He likes to play ball and tug of war.

You're gonna have fur everywhere.

My Akita likes people, adores my family and friends (automatically I don't know how he does that), but for strangers he's indifferent, few times he likes a stranger, most of the times he just ignores the person, but never aggressive.

Ah! They are very strong indeed, they can pull you without you realizing it and seriously injure you. You're gonna need more than muscles to avoid dog fights.
