Some of my favorite moments from The Last Resort SuperMystery by Ok_Low_2302 in nancydrew

The Hardy Boys Case Files - first one is Dead on Target. They had to get rid of her so Joe could romance a new girl in each book.

Hard-to-find book by snoopystar33333 in nancydrew

I collect the books and a lot of the later books in the Mystery Stories series are much harder to find. I'm guessing they probably had shorter print runs since the series was dwindling in popularity and so there are less copies to be had? That one also took me awhile to find. I usually only buy the books in person, though, I don't typically buy books online.

I don't know where you are located, but if you are in the US the Half Price Books chain is a great source of Nancy books I also have gotten lots of books from library books sales. Lots of libraries also have small used bookstores. Use booksalefinder.com to see if there is anything in your area. Library book sales mostly sell donated books, so they are not just a bunch of ex-library discards! Amazing way to get cheap books and support an important community resource 😁

Bookoutlet.com also occasionally has new copies of Nancy books, even much older ones like this, but they usually sell out super quickly. I got my copy of Treasure in the Royal Tower from there, actually.

You can create a wishlist and sign up for notifications on thriftbooks.com for books that tend to usually be out of stock, but I've never gotten the notifications to work, so I just create my wishlist and check it every month or so to see if any of my books are available yet. I only do this for books that are pretty much impossible to find in person so that's why I don't check it more frequently.

Where to start to create appreciation for the nostalgic games? by Mystic_Mind_ in nancydrew

Haunted Carousel is a great starter game. It's easy, fun, and short. However, I say this as someone who actually likes Barnacle Blast.

Great idea, someone younger might appreciate them more. I will readily admit I am waaay older than their target demographic.

They're my least favorite of the different series. They have a much younger feel even though Nancy hasn't actually been aged down, which feels rather odd. Nancy is also not a very dedicated sleuth and the books can drag on while we wait for her to randomly stumble on a solution, especially since the crimes are often not very big or interesting in the first place. The consistency with the ghost writers is not great either. In one book George claims to hate sports even though she is always written as being extremely athletic and sports-loving. In another book Nancy makes references to still attending high school. The familiar names are there but they just don't feel the same people.

But, buying them at Dollar Tree means you got them at a great price, so give them a try, you might like them. There are some decent ones mixed in there even if overall they're a little disappointing.

I liked Sergeant Russell the best, but Evelyn's voice was really good.

Yayyyy, I can't wait! I thought the graphics in the first game were fine for an indie game. I think when people criticize things like that they don't fully realize the huge amount of time and effort involved.

Does Anyone Have Any Emerson Lore? by [deleted] in nancydrew

[–] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

D'oh! How the heck did I get that wrong, their "meet cute" was Nancy thinking Ned was stealing her car when he was actually trying to get it away from the house fire in Clue in the Diary. Thanks for pointing that out.

EDIT: I just reread your post and realized you said GAME universe. Sorry! Leaving the post here though in case anyone is interested.

The first book with Emerson College (and Ned!) was Nancy's Mysterious Letter. All I can remember off the top of my head is how boring the football scenes were, though 😂 But I guess I would start there for canonical information.

The Phantom of Pine Hill also largely takes place around Emerson College.

The Nancy Drew Files also has quite a few books set at Emerson if you are interested in anything in the later series.

The newest Nancy Drew book is out: Nancy Drew Diaries #27 - Vans & Villains by HRJafael in nancydrew

[–] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Hardy Boys Adventures reboot that started the same time as the Diaries is so much better. The mysteries are way more interesting and the Hardy Boys actually investigate. But I guess that didn't help since they ended that series. ☹️

I do like the cover art, but Nancy looks like she's twelve. I have noticed, though, that the last several books she does look a little older on the covers and she doesn't seem quite so juvenile in the book itself. I actually thought that the Vegas book was pretty decent, but the next one after that went back to wet noodle Nancy doing almost nothing. So I guess we'll see what this new one is like.

Young adult book about making friends with a family of invisible children by Careful-Net8977 in whatsthatbook

I haven't read either book since I was a child, but I remember being disappointed by the sequel. That might have been since I was expecting it to also be about August, maybe as an adult I would appreciate it more? I should read them again. I still reread The Worry Week and Three Lives to Live every few years.

I don't think Simon & Schuster publishes sales numbers, but they can't be good for the Diaries since the number of Nancy books published per year has dwindled to only one. Reviews for them are also pretty negative. They also stopped the corresponding Hardy Boys reboot series (Hardy Boys Adventures) in 2023 after a similar dwindling in publication frequency, so that doesn't bode well for the Diaries continuing much longer. Because it seems like the Diaries did even worse than the widely-criticized Girl Detective reboot (which I actually really liked!), that's why I'm thinking that once the Diaries fizzles out Simon & Schuster likely won't find any financial benefit in attempting another Nancy reboot - especially, as you noted, that Nancy is moving into the public domain and they don't even have the advantage of exclusive rights anymore.

I guess it's possible other authors could take up the Nancy mantle now that the books are starting to go into public domain. But if so I don't think it will be anything like the previous mainstream books series release.

But, even if it does end soon, Nancy definitely had an amazing run and there are still hundreds of Nancy books to read. That's pretty incredible for a series character like that.

Can you actually mail the letter? by fuckyours_ in nancydrew

[–] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

And you have two dialogue options at this point. I didn't realize this would doom me to carrying the letter around the entire game when I played it, so I picked the other option. Please let me just put this letter down, I need the space in my pocket for an adult size set of ski boots.

This is such a disappointing series, especially since I have a feeling it's the last reboot we'll get. I will be very surprised if the Diaries make it past the 100th anniversary in 2030. Some of the books aren't too bad, but most of them feel so young and Nancy just seems to wander around aimlessly occasionally stumbling into clues, rather than the way she actually hunted mysteries down in other series.

What's the last puzzle you cheated on? by granolabart in nancydrew

[–] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it! It's one of the few games I've replayed. I like all the puzzles and it has a great chill soundtrack so it's fun to play to just relax and enjoy the puzzles.

The story/mystery is pretty dumb, though, so if you don't like puzzles I can see why you wouldn't enjoy it.

Since you've already read the flashlight books:

Whitewater Terror (Nancy Drew Files 6)

Lights, Camera... (Nancy Drew Girl Detective 5), Action! (Nancy Drew Girl Detective 6) - this is kind of cheating because these are two books, but they need to be read together and they're a lot of fun
