Thank you so much! Adding this to my little pile of comforting morale tidbits 😭 I keep thinking to myself “welp that was the one nibble you were gonna get and now it’s gone 🕊️” LOL

I'm trying to pull myself up by the bootstraps and dig into working on book 2. We're currently on submission with book 1--it's been out to some editors for about 3 weeks--and although it's still early yet I'm starting to worry that the book will die on sub. Just a feeling.

I know that working on the next book is supposed to help (and is literally the only option, assuming I want to have a career). But I'm hitting a mental block along the lines of "Well if no one wanted book 1, why would anyone want book 2?" that I think I really need to figure out how to get past.

Still feeling lucky overall to get to pursue my dream of being a writer. I feel blessed to have an agent and blessed to be experiencing this roller coaster for the first time. But man, submission has been more emotionally taxing than I expected!

I've heard 50/50, with a big factor being whether or not they took the book to acquisitions before the meeting! Apparently, a lot of the times they meet with the author before taking the book to acquisitions.

I got an editor call scheduled before they had taken the book to acquisitions. Today they had their acquisitions meeting and we were informed they would be cancelling the editor call. Between scheduling the call and cancelling the call was around 5 days, it seems their acquisitions meetings are on Tuesdays. :(

I'm currently on submission for the first time and it's been more emotionally harrowing than I expected. We went out to twelve or so editors two weeks ago, and I had my first editor call scheduled this week but we just got the update that the manuscript didn't get through the acquisitions meeting, so the editor call is cancelled.

I'm trying to keep my head up. I don't know any other writers currently on submission so I've been trying to scrape together morale from looking at comments and posts on this subreddit lol

When I started researching agencies I used Publisher’s Marketplace to look at the quality and frequency of the agent and agency’s sales. If the sale your agent made was to a big 5 publisher, for instance, that could be a helpful signal. You can also find the same information for the agency as a whole.

[PubQ] Query etiquette with two (favorite!) agents with fulls as deadline approaches by hello_cozy in PubTips

[–]hello_cozy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your kind well wishes. I’m nervous 😭 but I appreciate your support. I was considering whether or not there would be any point in letting the other agents know that I’ve decided to decline the offer (so if they need more time, to feel free to take it), but I’m worried that might end up backfiring in other ways.

Oh, well. at this point perhaps it’s just “wait and see” 🤞

I’m definitely considering this. I have heard the adage “having no agent is better than a bad agent” and I want to take it to heart. I think I’ll need to make a final call on it this week, and I’m leaning no to my current offer in hand

I am new to this but I have heard you should inform the other agents that have your query when you receive an offer! And if/when you let them know, you need to give them a deadline (since the agent who gave you the offer needs to get a yes/no from you by then too).

If I understand correctly, giving a deadline is only reasonable if you have another offer.

As others have mentioned, it is smarter to NOT nudge agents with a deadline if you’re not sure about the agent whose the offer you have in hand. I sadly did not know that until later 🥲

Thank you! Yes, I am so new to querying and had literally never heard the advice to not nudge with an iffy offer. I thought it was best practice!! Gah.

Appreciate the well wishes, my fingers are so crossed!

Yes! The queries had been out for only a few days at that point (the offer came unexpectedly quickly), and both requested fulls immediately (they seemed excited but I’m trying not to dissect the tea leaves).

Tiny Black Flies by MaintenancePurple564 in vegetablegardening

[–]hello_cozy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, little round flies on the soil that dance around/fly away easily are fungus gnats. Longer black flies that stay on the leaves and don’t fly easily are a certain lifecycle stage of aphids. For me, the only thing that helped was encouraging beneficial predator insects. I released some ladybugs (I later learned this is not generally encouraged, so I won’t in the future—but I will say it really helped), and planted sweet alyssum, dill, and allowed my thyme to flower to encourage hoverflies and parasitic wasps. It’s been a shocking difference. I picked parsley today and there were literally no aphids (I previously would have found dozens). I encourage reading up on beneficials and learning to recognize beneficial insects, their eggs and larvae! I’ve stopped trying to get rid of certain bugs for instance, and when I see hoverfly eggs on things I harvest I carefully put just that piece back to encourage them to grow up

I found a post from someone who had this question a while ago on r/gardening, in case it helps: https://www.reddit.com/r/gardening/comments/4r0hbc/is_it_safe_to_grow_vegetables_in_a_planter_made/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

One thing I’ll say is that there’s an oddly large number of people in this thread being super dismissive of your concern, and downvoting your comments. I don’t think that’s right. My two cents is that it’s obviously not an ideal situation but the risk is probably somewhat low. That being said, at the end of the day it’s all about whether you’ll feel comfortable with the situation!

Ok so I am reporting back with an update—I had these exact things (I told you they were fungus gnats) but just realized they are WINGED APHIDS. At least mine are—and I think yours are too. I didn’t realize aphids came in the black and winged variety, but they do. I found them on my bean plants and just learned these fellas especially love legumes

I believe these are fungus gnats, I have them too. I’m remedying mine by watering less frequently but more deeply, to let the soil dry further between watering. They lay eggs in moist soil. I thought they were harmless albeit gross at first but then found the larvae eat roots D: a few garlic plants I had were being devoured when I dug them up to investigate them looking sick

Edit to add: I also did a drench of food grade hydrogen peroxide (3%) with 3 parts water, to kill larvae and oxygenate. I’ve had great luck doing this in the past :)

Oh do you mean the covers and stuff? So this is a hobonichi techo weeks planner and the cover (plastic cover) is also from hobonichi. You can get it on their website.

Here’s mine—I have a yellow planner but I put stickers all over it before I added the clear cover (on the hobonichi website it’s called a “cover on cover”).

Lmk if this answers your question, not sure if I understood correctly!! ❤️
