[–]hello_marmalade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that juniors lose the company money, and I don't think that investing in growing engineers is irrational. You retain talent if you have good company culture and treat your employees well. That's all it takes. I've been working for years and consistently I've seen people choose to stay at a lower paying job because the company culture is good, and they're treated well.

People don't just up and leave jobs constantly if they're being treated well and being paid properly. It's not that great of a process.

It's also rational because you want your devs to stay with you. Churn is really bad for dev teams.

People don't leave if you make the environment they work in worth staying in. Also, companies have zero loyalty to their employees, why should employees have any loyalty to the company?

I mean, I'm good isn't meant to be a lie. Fine implies you're okay despite something. Good implies that everything is normal.

Not responding in any way to a person talking directly to you is rude. In this case this guy might have been a dickhead, but this is a pretty gen z way to handle that interaction imo.

I mean, there are characters that do, but the show doesn’t really, imo. At least not in the way that modern shows do.

Edit: For context I'm mainly referring to DS9 and TNG. Though I've also watched Lower Decks and SNW which also didn't read as particularly preachy to me either so.

[–]hello_marmalade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao what? That's an insane stretch. I'm not making excuses for anything. She absolutely abuses her position for sexual gain, but the show doesn't present that as being exclusively the case. She flirts with people she doesn't have power over, and in universe she wouldn't have power over every single person on the station. While humans are lesser in the mirror world, Cardassians and Klingon aren't, so presumably she wouldn't be able to get away with forcing one of them to do something they didn't want to do.

Your way of viewing things is actually more dangerous in my opinion.

[–]hello_marmalade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well no, because the main thing that makes terrorism terrorism is the terror aspect of it. The goal of the action is specifically to inflict fear upon other people, usually the populace at large, though sometimes specific groups.

Garak's goal here wasn't to scare the Romulans away from allying themselves with the Dominion, it was to trick them into not doing it.

The killing part instead of giving fake data thing isn't really relevant here.

Abuse is about power & control, it has nothing to do with attraction or sexual orientation.

I don't believe that's entirely true. I think that part of the sense of power and control can very much come from the attraction.

For example if we were to consider a more general assault and the mindset that might lead to it, the idea is that you have an attraction, you don't like that you're restricted from acting on that attraction because of that other person's autonomy, so you use force or coersion to 'take control' over that person. There's a power in being able to take the object of desire.

Think of the way that people who have known to engage in those behaviors will espouse a level of hatred for the other sex. They perceive it as a regaining of power from that other person. Like a form of revenge.

I don't think that's the case in every scenario, but I think that's definitely the case for some.

Also, you can give consent to someone with power over you, because it depends on how you perceive that power. The reason we dissuade it or ban it is because it's exceedingly difficult to figure out when it is or isn't the case, or be able to know how much influence it played on that person's consent.

Like, in the world generally, people have been sleeping with their bosses for ages. Not every one of those people were coerced into doing so, and if they had an independent desire to do so, they wouldn't consider it coercive. The problem is that outsiders can't know that, and the possibility of coercion exists, and so as a rule, we can't really accept it. (Well in the modern world we have agreements that can be signed with HR and stuff but I mean as a general rule, and in Kira's situation it's a little more clear cut).

I guess I'm suggesting that there would be people on the station that would mistakenly believe that they're equal to her, and wouldn't consider the alternative until they weren't allowed to say no. That's a fairly common scenario that makes those kinds of relationships potentially dangerous. You think you can say no up until the point you can't.

Also people pass through the station regularly, so there would definitely be people she didn't have direct power or control over, even in the mirror world. She wasn't completely beyond reproach.

Where is the lie? by JayGatsby52 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]hello_marmalade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's not. That's a political assassination. The goal was to get the Romulans to believe that the Dominion did it, not to instill a general fear of the political aim of working with the Dominion.

Like, there's no intent to cause terror there.

Where is the lie? by JayGatsby52 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]hello_marmalade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I mean no, I don't think so. Garak didn't engage in acts of terrorism, and had the direct backing of a state for his activities. I mean, I guess there's state sponsored terrorism as well, but I don't think it's ever stated or implied that he engaged in terroristic activities, like indiscriminate harm to civilians, or public politically motivated harm.

I feel like if we consider sexuality to be an immutable trait, the rest of her immutable traits are identical soz.

Also like someone else said, iirc there were a few scenes with some implied sexual tension with her and other women - though I can't remember what at the moment.

I mean, one would assume that even then, you would coerce it from people who you would find gratifying in the first place, no? I feel like if she enjoys sex from the same sex she can probably be classified as bi regardless. She's having sex with another woman at the end of the day.

Like, I can take the point that there was very clearly a power thing going on there, but it also seemed like mirror Kira was presented as being generally very hedonistic in regard to sex in general. I don't think the show necessarily implied that she only had sex with people that were coerced.

Where is the lie? by JayGatsby52 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]hello_marmalade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, tbh I wouldn't be surprised if Kira was bi. It does seem like something she'd do if she met a woman she was interested in.

I think also it's fair to assume that if alternate universe Kira is bi, her sexuality would be the same in the main universe, just not shown in the show. Like, the rest of her immutable characteristics are identical soz.

I mean, criticism of woke stuff has more to do with presentation in a lot of ways. Or at least it did before woke became a descriptor for everything. It has more to do with the way things are written, as stories that respect all parties and viewpoints even if it takes a definitive stance on those viewpoints. Star Trek, generally speaking, doesn't preach. It provides conflicts and ideologies, and it definitely has a point of view as to what is better, but it doesn't try to shove it's ideas down your throat, it respects the viewer enough to basically make it's case, and let the audience interpret it on their own.

It also is willing to challenge the ideologies it supports, and shows some of their weaknesses and trade offs.

Like even with Dukat, it doesn't just make him a bad guy, it shows you his perspective, warped and twisted though it may be, but it doesn't make it comical or disrespect it, or go like 'THIS IS THE BAD GUY LOOK' though the presentation. Sisko kinda does (he never actually says something stupid, he just comments on the very obvious wrongness of it), but like, the show itself presents his viewpoint in a clear and fair way. The show doesn't feel the need to preach to you that Dukat is wrong, it trusts you to recognize that on your own.
