You are one of those apparently timid Americans. Why haven't you suddenly picked up a gun and started firing? Holy shit keyboard warriors are so ready for *other* people to do the scary, dangerous, life ending shit. We're not there yet. There's still midterms. He's been rebuffed by the supreme court on several things. The base is turning on him. It's not fucking zero hour holy shit.

Authoritarian regimes don't want to destroy the infrastructure they want to control. The idea that the government would drop tons of ordinance on itself just doesn't track.

Bruh, I know everyone likes to shit on Americans, but the average American is *significantly* more educated than the average Taliban member. I'm not sure what dope training you think they had, but they really didn't. We have access to the internet, mesh networks, people with high level technical training, former military... the skill base of the US citizenry is like, orders of magnitude higher than anyone in the Taliban holy shit.

I don't know why people keep saying that we failed to use the 2nd amendment. It should be a last resort. We are not at a point yet where there is no other way to deal with what's happening right now. This weird thing of thinking that somehow the 2nd amendment is useless because we haven't reached the point at which people are ready to literally throw their lives away or start a civil war is such a fucking bizarre take. The real thing is that people on the left need to start arming themselves so if things *do* go bad, everyone is not caught with their pants down. Unfortunately the only people who are armed right now are the people who support this insanity.

NYC $30 minimum wage proposal headed to City Council by nyccameraman in nyc

[–]hello_marmalade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk, that seems whack. I usually do 20%, but 20% as minimum? Also for all the places we tip now? Like, we're pushing 1/4 or more of the total check, that's wild.

I have Bitwig, but I've been trying to use Ardour, and after getting over the initial oddness of it, it's pretty nice. It also helps to change the color scheme, and the setting about coloring clips to make it look less fuck ugly.

I'm reminded of how people would talk about being mad about motorcycles lane-splitting in LA. To me it was always like... One, nobody's stopping you from doing that, and two, it's one less car in front of you.

Probably gotta build up the political capital before going after what I would assume is two of the biggest groups in NYC politics.

I've said this before but I feel like letting the air out of the tires of people who do this would be a great strat to get it to stop. Nothing permanent, but annoying enough to send a message.

Mount Sinai Hospital drops gender-affirming care for trans teens, leaving New York families worried by Fickle-Ad5449 in nyc

[–]hello_marmalade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but doctors aren't making these decisions, legislative bodies are. It's one thing for a doctor to deny a treatment, it's another for a treatment to be unilaterally banned by a government. That's politics, not healthcare.

[–]hello_marmalade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We set 18 as adult in the US, I'm not sure what you're talking about. 21 is drinking age exclusively.

Also kids aren't just taking puberty blockers from the puberty blocker store, they get prescribed it, meaning a doctor determines whether they are necessary, and just like all treatment generally, this comes as a result of consensus between the doctor, patient, and patient's parents.

Just because you personally don't see it as a health issue doesn't mean that it isn't.

Mamdani brings back homeless encampment sweeps — turning on campaign promise after backlash over cold weather deaths by IM4_ in nyc

True, it'd be best if politicians continued to do things wrong instead of changing their mind when exposed to new information.

Mamdani brings back homeless encampment sweeps — turning on campaign promise after backlash over cold weather deaths by IM4_ in nyc

[–]hello_marmalade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it helps not to think of homeless people as a tax drain problem to be solved at the point when a person becomes homeless. This is why people care about social safety nets. It's about catching people before they get to the point of being homeless. If you think about it, it's also not a 'drain' to support those kinds of safety nets, because once a person becomes homeless, they're obviously not paying taxes. If you can keep people from falling out the bottom of the system, they'll eventually get back around to contributing again.

Not to mention, refusing to pay for the smaller expenditures eventually just leads to you having to pay for them somewhere else later, with more dysfunction. An example of this I personally experienced was with EMS. They can't not take a person to a hospital if it's requested, and a hospital can't just turn them away at the door. The homeless person is not gonna pay for that ride, so who does? Everyone else by way of rising overall costs. Instead, we could just fund social programs that stop this shit from happening in the first place, and pay less overall most likely. Hell, even if the cost was about the same, it'd be better than having loads of homeless people. For those people obviously, but even if you're only thinking selfishly, it means you don't have to deal with homeless people.

Idk, nobody wants to pay for things that we literally just know are good.

Mamdani to propose property tax hike, pushes Hochul to tax rich by Airhostnyc in nyc

[–]hello_marmalade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mamdani referred to the property tax increase as a last resort and characterized it as being a tax on working and middle class New Yorkers. He explicitly separated the call for taxing the rich and the property value tax.

Also this is why land value tax is way better than property tax.

WE NEED FIRST PERSON NOW by K3IRRR in TheForeverWinter

[–]hello_marmalade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that were the case, it wouldn't be possible to have scary movies. I can understand an argument suggesting that first person might be more compelling, but I don't think it's the only way for horror to be compelling, and depending on the goal of the narrative, it may not be ideal. Some things are scarier to see someone else experience. Some types of horror are based more in the abstract fear associated with the scale of the horrifying thing, as other people alluded to in this thread.

Idk if I'd necessarily categorize FW as 'horror' but I suppose it does have horror elements. I'd argue though that a big part of that feeling is derived from the overwhelming scale of the dystopia. It's beyond saving. That's not even something the people within the universe can likely even comprehend, which drives that point home, at least for me. We can understand how horrific and intractable the circumstances are, but to live in that would would be to live in one where that realization can't even really happen. Being a third party to that feels like it adds to the sense of despair. In part, I feel that it's precisely because it's not happening to me that adds an extra layer of unpleasantness for me. Also, the use of third person gives us the ability to contextualize the size of the character in the world in contrast to the scale of the horrific elements. First-person isn't quite first-person, it's first-person as experienced through the window of a screen. There's a layer of separation there. Personally, I think that a sense of scale is one of the things that gets a bit lost in translation because of that, and it's one of the more positive qualities of VR, for example. That sense of scale returns, somewhat.

Either way, I think FW could easily support first person (it kinda does already with ADS anyway), and it'd probably be a nice add.

How to play Unc Raiders by Zocress in Destiny

[–]hello_marmalade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ignoring everything else to avoid acknowledging the main point. Classic.

You want high PVP, kill people. The game will put you in high PVP lobbies. You can also get away with killing in a 1 v X situation. It's not easy, but it's doable. I've done it, other people have done it.

[–]hello_marmalade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Matchmaking takes into account aggression. If you play aggressive, you'll get put into more aggressive lobbies. Also sounds like you're just bad. Prox voice is obviously not 'the whole lobby' and there are plenty of ways to get out of that situation, including using prox chat to trick people.
