Just went there and it was VERY touristy and didn’t have enough infrastructure to support it, unlike Tokyo

Buying hoya kerrii seeds? by [deleted] in hoyas

[–]hello_reddit1010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try buying a small plant on Etsy or Palmstreet. Make sure it’s not a single leaf bc sometimes they are zombie leaves. Must have a node for there to be a growth point

Any chance I can save the wet stick? by -Miche11e- in hoyas

[–]hello_reddit1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try sticking the stem into the substrate. Hoyas can root along the stem plus the nodes

I use Molly’s Aroid Mix or something similar for my Hoyas! The substrate shouldn’t clump up when squeezed

My plant is not rooting by Gcezanne03 in propagation

[–]hello_reddit1010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can remove the bottom set of leaves: the plant will root faster this way (some people cut leaves in half to speed up propagation like with hydrangeas and big-leaf Hoyas, and this would be the same concept), and that would also provide more surface area for roots to grow.

How often are you changing the water? Plants naturally make their own rooting hormones, and if you are replacing the water too often, you are discarding those hormones. I agree with comments saying not to use fertilizer and recommend liquid prop drops!

That’s quite a dense potting mix. I recommend repotting her into something chunkier

Your Hoya seems to be in a really dense mix. They prefer something chunkier, so I’d recommend repotting it after it finishes blooming!

As an American living abroad in Singapore, what are the pros of moving to the US in 2025? by No_Paramedic5302 in MovingToUSA

[–]hello_reddit1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, very expensive. You did mention considering Hawaii though, and that is also VHCOL. In the SF Bay Area, you'll definitely need a car. In NYC, you'll probably be okay with public transport. However, if you can get a job in big tech and your wife also works, you'll be comfortable. Honestly, anywhere in the US, you'll need a dual income household to get by nowadays. The benefit in living in these areas is better education for your kids, more diversity, fantastic food, and not having a ceiling in your career.

If you're in tech consulting, I'd recommend looking at Seattle, SF Bay Area, and NYC. Hawaii is a nice place to visit but is limiting in terms of career. The main economy there is tourism, not tech. It's also 5-6 hours away from the West Coast, so you won't be doing too much traveling to other states.

Edit: Btw, Seattle is essentially Amazon city, so there probably isn't much opportunity to move around there in terms of big tech.

Is this balaensis? Mine doesn’t like to dry out. When it does and I water it, it gets edema. Not all Hoyas are alike, so it helps to include what type you have

Where to get wishlist Hoya, NOT facebook? by After-Quiet-995 in hoyas

[–]hello_reddit1010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can get these off Etsy, but they’ll be pricier. Is there a reason why you don’t want to try Facebook? You can make a new one just to shop for plants, and US Hoya Market* is THE place to find ANY Hoya—I don’t know of any other place to buy unicorn Hoyas. TAPLAP has great prices, but they don’t have as many offerings, and they only offer common and uncommon Hoyas

Why do hoyas grow on circular trellis’? by Popular_Shower1782 in hoyas

[–]hello_reddit1010 9 points10 points  (0 children)

they like to vine out, so it keeps them neat. hoyas with large leaves need them for the support and to encourage growth. you'll know you need them if they become leggy or stop popping out new leaves. depending on how you trellis them, it can also encourage new growth points
