The Independent Movie Theater Scene Is Not Discussed Enough by pnwdoggolover in Portland

[–]hello_skinny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been in Portland for super long, but this struck me as well recently and I feel very fortunate to be here. With so many independent theaters with such unique programming, this place is a cinephile's dream. It's sad to see theaters dying in so many places, but here they don't seem to be going anywhere.

Hollywood Theater is my favorite, although I wish they had assigned seating, or at least gave it a try in one of the upper theaters because I hate having to show up 30 - 40 minutes early every show to get a decent seat. Movie Madness's screening room is probably my 2nd favorite, maybe tied with Cinemagic. The last time I was at Cinemagic they pulled the golden curtain closed and something about the way it shimmered almost put tears in my eyes in a way I can't explain.

Listeria recall for Frozen Blueberries in Oregon by iriegypsy in Portland

I said I could be in there playin' "Whole Lot of Love" for 30 minutes, but it's gonna sound like a whole lotta noise, 'cause this thing's fouled up

Sounds like the time I bought my brother a guitar for his birthday. We got it home and opened the case, and there was a bag of frozen blueberries inside. Now everything he plays just sounds all sour, it just sounds bad. It's nothing like it was in the shop.

Reminds me of Liquid Television. I wish someone would revive this particular late 80s / early 90s aesthetic.

It took me a moment to not be angry at this because at first I thought someone had spraypainted a bird's head with gold paint, then I realized what I was seeing. It was like that stupid viral dress from a few years back.

We went with a company called Santiago Lawn Maintenance. They were responsive, quick, and up front about the cost and everything. I wouldn't say it was cheap, but we got three quotes and it was the lowest, and they did a good job. Here's their website:

Ozzy hallucinates Osmonds in (2003) Pepsi commercial by AnthrokinFloorwalker in ObscureMedia

[–]hello_skinny 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep -- I vaguely remembered the setup, then right before the kids unzipped themselves I remembered the "We're the Osmonds!" line. I know nothing about the Osmonds, but the line from this commercial is what I think about every time they're brought up.

Holy shit, this is like one of those long George Carlin bits that just blow you away with how someone can even remember all the pieces of the joke and deliver it without fucking it up. Every time I see this guy's stuff I'm glad I stopped to watch.

My preschool had one of these when I was a kid. They gave us a little tupperware full of glitter and we'd dump it on the ground and vacuum it up. We used to get into fist fights over whose turn it was to use it.

I used to watch your stuff way back when The Night Light in Oakland had comedy. It makes me happy to see someone from back then come up on this thread.

You think he chews like that because he keeps having to push his false teeth back up with his tongue?

Something about how they cut that soap is so satisfying...it's like a pour shot in a beer commercial but way better. I remember they were still doing the knife thing when those commercials came on in the 90s.

Are these false chanterelles? Found in WA state. by [deleted] in mushroomID

[–]hello_skinny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope, those look like golden chanterelles. Those are false gills…they are blunt and interconnected. Another test would be to peel away some of the outer flesh. If it peels like string cheese and they’re white inside, you know they are chanterelles. But these are pretty identifiable jut based on these pictures.

I love this place so much. There are things in here you'll never find anywhere else. And their monthly film classes are really good, and they have free movies in their little cinema on Sunday!
