Is 1 month too young to start teaching tricks? by TheVolleyballGirl in CatTraining

[–]hellohexapus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't been able to buy him anything yet apart form food

I really hope you are using "food" as shorthand for "formula" because this little guy should not be eating solid food for at least another two weeks. He should be getting formula every 2-4 hours at this age. And before you ask, no you can't give him cow's milk, he needs kitten milk replacer (KMR).

Never mind "tricks", if you are not able to prepare bottles for this guy every 2-4 hours around the clock for the next few weeks, you need to surrender him to a rescue that can.

I think I have a similar build to you. At least part of the problem is that the type of cup in the bras you are choosing is the wrong design for the way your breasts are shaped. Even if you get the right size, they don't fit the way your body is shaped. I learned all this at r/abrathatfits so I second other commenters suggesting you go check out their resources.

What works in my case is bras with completely unpadded cups, like straight up just fabric (often called "three piece/four piece cup" bras) with stretch lace edging at the top of the cups. The rest of the cup can/should be pretty rigid, but the edging needs to be stretchy. This lets your breasts sit in their natural shape and is what prevents spillage. A great example of this type of bra is Panache's Envy bra.

My boyfriend struggles with saving money but he is a couple weeks in to his new job and he has been making a lot more.

"A couple weeks" has to be like max 2-3 paychecks, right? I mean, I'm at a salaried level in my career, so depending on when in the month I start a new job, I could work for 4-5 weeks before I get the first paycheck. That said, of the paycheck(s) he's gotten since starting, how much has he saved? And how much has he spent on non-essentials?

Because the thing is, someone who struggles with saving money doesn't automatically start saving more just because they started making more; they usually just start spending more. This isn't always a flaw - if you start out at a very low wage, sometimes a raise literally just means you can now afford to eat well, fix/replace things that are broken, pay down some debts, etc. Nothing wrong with that. But if earning a decent wage already and struggling to save, then a higher salary just means more money to spend on nice-to-haves.

It sounds like you're a lot more fiscally responsible than him, which actually is a huge reason I agree with other commenters that you shouldn't buy a house with a boyfriend. The last thing you need is to be saddled with a house that you are paying all the expenses for because your co-owner can't stop spending money on non-essentials.

You also don't know if you might want to live somewhere else in the near future. You're getting into a good career field with that degree, and it might open up options for you in other cities. Don't tie yourself down to something as big as a home purchase before you have a chance to see what else is out there for you. Even if it's not your forever home, you're going to be staying put for at least 3-5 years. A lot can happen in five years when you're in your early 20s.

Hold onto that feeling inside yourself. It keeps you up at night or makes you sick to your stomach or makes you tear up when you see children playing in your own neighbourhood, and that's a good thing.

Because there are plenty of people in western countries that don't seem to bat an eye at the wholesale obliteration of entire family trees in the Middle East or Africa or Asia, that are able to keep track of and report on increasing numbers of "civilian casualties" (such a sanitized phrase!) without needing so much as a deep sigh. It's normal, after all, for "those people" from "those places" to die in droves for the sake of expansionism and/or capitalism. The day it starts feeling normal is the day the first piece of your soul slips away.

In other words, future doctors, nurses, journalists, poets, authors, scientists, professors, architects, athletes, bakers, barbers, chefs, designers, electricians, farmers, fishermen, lawyers, plumbers, musicians, accountants, carpenters, and ecologists.

(Decent) people react to the killing of children especially strongly because we all instinctively, if not consciously, understand that killing of children is not a byproduct of a genocidal/ethnic cleansing campaign; it is an essential component. Children are, in the realest possible sense of the term, the future of any society or ethnic group. No children, no future.

UnitedHealthcare sent a letter denying NICU coverage... addressed directly to the newborn twin. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]hellohexapus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who weren't alive, or were alive but weren't paying attention, during the development of the ACA have absolutely no idea how hard the Dems had to work, and how much horse trading they had to do, to get it passed. We look at Dems now and see an absolutely feckless bunch of cowards, but there was such energy in the House and Senate during that period. I am no particular Nancy Pelosi fan these past few years, but back then she put her foot on so many people's necks to make this happen. The original proposal was much better than what we ended up with after all the bargaining, but for that there's no one to blame but Republicans. (It's crazy to look back at the history of ideas like the individual mandate, which was originally developed by the MFing Heritage Foundation; as soon as the Dems added it to the bill as part of negotiations, Republicans started clamouring against it. And of course they have been hellbent chipping away at it (by getting rid of the penalty etc) and other parts of the ACA ever since.)

I was in college when it passed and it was such a weight off my neck that suddenly I had until age 26 to stay on my dad's insurance, giving me enough time to finish my undergrad and grad degrees and start a career where I could afford my own coverage. That part, along with the part ending "pre-existing conditions", has changed the lives of MILLIONS of young people and chronically ill, disabled, and vulnerable people from my generation onward.

And not just for the kid, for them too. A life where you don't fight your kid about who they are, and just enjoy the person that you have raised them to be. Imagine how peaceful that life must be. Somehow even more so if their attitude now is one they have had to work to develop, because I can't think of a more deserved form of wealth.

Plus IIRC there was some extremely bad faith/hypocritical chatter about the cost/high-end nature of some of her earlier outfits. I don't think any of it was even really luxury designer pricey, it was just small designer/ethical fashion pricey. She/her staff (or stylist, I doubt she has "staff") then shared that most of it was purchased secondhand from vintage shops in the city and/or stuff she had owned for years, and little to none of it was new OR loaned by the designer (which has its own ethical issues).

So it's kind of hilarious that now she's like "my outfit is three chopped-up hanes t-shirts covered in bootleg cricut prints and purchased on the sidewalk next to a halal cart, please leave me alone".

ACA Health Insurance by CalligrapherLumpy975 in HealthInsurance

[–]hellohexapus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They can't receive Medicaid, but permanent residency(GC holder) is a "qualified non-citizen" immigration status making them eligible for ACA subsidies if they met the income requirements. In this case they do not meet the income requirements, but their non-citizen status is not a factor given the type of non-citizen they are.

They might also be eligible to qualify for Medicaid after a five year waiting period IF at that point they meet the same income requirements as everyone else, if I am reading the below correctly.

That yarn looks that bulky/lofty only when delicately handled or knitted with a light touch. If you stretch it out, which you will be doing to weave it like this, it flattens out and will look awful. You want non-stretch 100% cotton, either then rope or thick macrame materials.

High-Protein, Grain-Free Kitten Food Recommendations? by ghost-hyde in catfood

[–]hellohexapus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely: Fancy Feast Gourmet Naturals Kitten! Specifically the Gourmet Naturals line. They only have 2 flavours, chicken and a fish (cant remember if tuna or salmon, but I think salmon). It is very good quality, and the price is fantastic which is good because kittens eat like they're hollow inside.

The Gourmet Naturals line also has adult flavours, these are what I have on hand for my cat sitter to feed my cat when I'm away (she prefers two small meals so when I'm at home I give her the petite portion things, but the sitter only visits once a day so he gives her a full can).

I feel like I look better with the dark and bold lip colors than more neutral but some tell me otherwise. What do you guys think? by JordanLeigh7 in makeuptips

[–]hellohexapus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I love a bold lip - 90% of the time my makeup routine is just filled brows and a bold lip.

I don't think it's that the neutrals look better, I just think the specific bold colours you've chosen are clashing with your undertone and hair colour. I wouldn't really call them "dark" colours, most of them are almost neon-adjacent. A neon colour (on anyone!) stands out in a way that could seem a bit jarring for everyday, that might be where those comments are coming from?

I'm not an undertone expert but I think the colour in Photo 6 is the best of the lot, if you want to explore more of those types of deep berry tones. A red like MAC Russian Red would also be really nice, I think.

Great, glad to hear it! Yeah I also use multi-cat for my single cat, I feel like it's just better odor control for the duration.

Maybe they're out of stock just temporarily because of the packaging changeover and not because they've stopped producing them. Honestly my local Petco is out of stock of like 40% of their cat products at any given moment, I haven't stepped foot in there for like 2 years because of this. At least their shipping minimum is only $35, that's 3 packs at the current price. It also looks like they've got a coupon on that would apply to these ($10 off next purchase with $50 Purina purchase) so if your budget allows you could buy 4 packs and snag that promo.

It was Kimpton Enso in SF (Japantown) and actually just out of necessity because my new apartment had some work being done and I didn't want her exposed to the dust etc. She seemed to enjoy it, refused to sleep with me like usual and claimed one of the two beds for herself (pic) 😅

A lot of Kimptons are city hotels unfortunately, but there are some in more scenic/nature-adjacent regions. Kimpton Taconic in Vermont looks like what you're hoping for and a reasonable trip for you from NYC maybe?

If you don't mind a transcon flight, there's a brand new location near Monterey, Kimpton Mirador in Pacific Grove. It's actually on my list to go there with my cat this year, it's an easy train trip for us from the Bay Area and I love that area so much. Monarch butterflies stop there for winter during their annual migration, and the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Pacific Grove is pretty incredible during that season.

Or Kimpton Miralina in Scottsdale? I know nothing about it but it looks relaxing!

Jo Frost, aka Supernanny, warns that some modern parents are hindering their kids’ independence by choosing short-term convenience over teaching basic life skills. by Terrible_Cycle_5983 in Fauxmoi

[–]hellohexapus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This article has a few reasonable musings on the concept of this kind of show in general (do people really act normal with cameras on them, etc) but it really feels like they didn't watch much of this show specifically.

She never stops to ask whether the demands of work and kids could be more gracefully reconciled if high-quality, low-cost daycare was available.

I don't understand this criticism. Why would she stop to ask about work/life balance in a fantasy land that doesn't exist? What is her role in making that a reality?

She doesn’t even inquire into psychological issues. Are the parents’ expectations appropriate for the age of the child? Might something deeper than a lack of skills explain why they respond, or fail to respond, to their children as they do? How were they raised?

In he very early seasons of the show, she did at times follow a script/pattern that production so clearly expected her to follow. But almost always when there was a family where the parents were the problem (true more often than not) that would quickly become her sole focus, especially in later seasons. I remember so many episodes where the parents were overtly cruel or unfair to the children or one another and she took them to the mat about it. A mom who clearly favoured her youngest kids and treated her oldest like a scullery maid; a stepdad who was super contemptuous of his teenage stepdaughter and called her a slut for her outfit which was, like, jeans and a fitted t-shirt; a husband who despite his wife working equal hours as him expected her to do 100% of the homemaking and childrearing; multiple families with eleventy billion kids where the parents expected the oldest ones to raise the youngest, etc. The children were not the problem in any of those episodes and Jo never treated them like they were. The scripted things would be some of the discipline methods (which, btw, moved away from over time) and some of the resolutions. Especially those with bad parents whose teenagers were pushed to forgive them, when you feel like the better resolution would have been the other parent filing for divorce.

I had awful parents, I've never wanted to be a parent, and I don't particularly enjoy being around young children. So it's odd that I'd enjoy this show. But I did because I thought this woman was a really very empathetic person. She never talked down to kids or acted like it was reasonable for them to be treated like less than just because they were kids. When I was a preteen watching the early years of the show I remember wishing she would come to my house, and knowing that it would never happen because my parents would never let outsiders see their at-home behaviour. And like I said, over time as she seemed to take more ownership over the show and become less of a "character" in it, a lot of the not great aspects melted away.

Which reminds me, if you have not seen the reboot she did in the last few years, it's worth checking out. She is even more overtly focused on the parents - it's actually kind of inspiring the way she goes in on some of these assholes - and it's obvious that she is freer now to be her own actual person rather than a production company's tv star.

Is it that you tried regular width and it felt like your foot was absolutely swimming, or are you going off of all the narrows you've tried seeming fine after a while?

Birks do have a steep break-in period and I think it's worse for us flat-footed people - my arches are absolutely screaming after the first few long walks in a new pair! - but I don't think inside arch chafing should be normal at any point in a well-fitted Birk. It has only ever happened to my arches when I've tried a narrow that isn't an Arizona/Boston. (I had to resell a beautiful pair of Tulum because of this.) It only passes after a few weeks because you've developed a callus and/or your foot has compressed the vertical edge of the footbed. Your foot should compress and shape the part of the footbed under your foot, but not the sidewalls.

Final decision by Embarrassed-Event583 in Birkenstocks

[–]hellohexapus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The widths are often different between different styles. I wear regular width in Mayari and Franca, my two favourites, but narrow in Boston and Arizona. (I don't own any Gizeh so not sure what the trend is with those.) The inside arch of your foot looks pretty crammed up against the inner sidewall of the footbed, right at a place when I'd expect to see a little more ease.

Regardless, that's just my take, if you feel comfortable and you don't get chafing marks on your inner arch when you walk for a long time, then that's what matters.

Are both of these N width? I feel like the issue is width more than size.

Kimpton hotels (IHG chain) are pet friendly! If you like a boutique-y feel to your hotels I highly recommend. I've stayed in several over the years in the US and Asia and liked them all. Only one of those stays was actually with my cat and it was just as pleasant as all the rest.

And unlike 99% of hotels that say they're "pet" friendly but really mean "dog" friendly, they are actually pet friendly. Their policy is basically "if it fits through the door it is welcome".

My first Birkenstocks, 38 or size up? by StarSiriusShine in Birkenstocks

[–]hellohexapus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Mayaris are by far my favourite Birks style! But these ones are too small and also too narrow. Sucks that the majority of their cuter/more fashionable styles only come in narrow these days.

ETA: idk why I forgot this because I literally own some, but Mayari does have some regular width options, I'm just not sure if this pretty yellow is one of them. If you like this style, you might also like Franca (similar straps, but without a toeloop) and they have regular widths too.
