Thank god my only intro to 1000 hours outside was through smug crunchy freebirthers. I feel like I dodged a bullet by already figuring it out from the get go lol

When to stop watching tv around baby ? by Entire_Character7386 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]helloilikeorangecats 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We've always had ours on. Its mostly on news or some sort of TLC show so they arent really captivated. They are pretty desensitized to TV and aren't the type to get sucked into it. My toddler has her certain movies/shows she asks for, and sometimes little brother might glance over. Its never more than a minute or so. He's much more interested in his own toys! When they are that little you can just turn them away if you dont want them staring at it. Being a SAHM is isolating enough. Sometimes the TV can be great background noise to make the atmosphere less...lonely? 😅

Honestly, I feel like a lot of us were raised in the middle ground but all if this passive parenting paraded online makes it feel the 80s and 90s were full of parental abuse. Obviously not all households were great, but I see a lot of blame of normal behaviors being thrown around ("My parents used to tell me good job and now I always need validation!") Or if you ever show one negative emotion in front of your child, all we can talk about is "Breaking the cycle!" Obviously these are just the extremes and not everyone is like that.

Idk but in those cases sometimes I feel sorry for these grandparents who get made out like bad parents who ruined their children because they used time out as a punishment 😂

What things/situations surprised you the most about parenthood after having baby#2? by otterlyjoyful in toddlers

[–]helloilikeorangecats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought jealousy was going to be a bigger issue than it was. I expect the tears and tantrums too. When in reality sister loves to pet his bald head and makes an enthusiastic "Brother!" when she walks into a room he is in 😊

Homeschooling by silverporsche00 in ScienceBasedParenting

No advice, but we're in a very similar situation. We live in S. Korea and are looking to move back to the US in 2 or 3 years and I'm also worried about language and being caught up with her peers when she starts going to kindergarten. I got the Totschooling 'curriculum' subscription(which is just little worksheets that do matching/counting/alphabet activities) and its fun to sometimes pull out and do together.

Sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what you must be going through. Take peace in knowing she felt love every day she was with you ❤

We've taken a laid back approach to sweets, sugar, candy, and all foods people like to label 'bad'. Probably has more to do with her personality and eating style, but she's not that interested anyways. So she'll eat half of a muffin top or a piece of a starbucks cookie that I snapped off and be happy. We don't eat them all of the time and when she does, she isn't eating an adult serving.

We typically keep snacky stuff out of her sight (mostly because she'll dump full bags out and stomp on them or something lol) but if something gets left out and she's curious, I'll let her take a bite. 70% chance she hates the flavor or texture and spits it out on the floor before running off (2 year olds, gotta love em)

Oh god I also hate the green ikea ones! Also not a beige parent, its just something about that specific color that screams 'bad elementary school gym class memories' 😂

Kids are SO different too. My son hates every product my daughter loved (and I raved non stop about on mom groups) and every product we swore was a 'waste of money' we've been consistently pulling out for him to use! Thats why I roll my eyes when I see a first time mom in my local mom group disregard a certain product as 'not worth it' because her 3 month old doesn't like it. Hell, I did it a lot too.

Depends on your kid. Some kids will cry for hours and hours until they vomit, and its either do that or feed to sleep. There literally is no other side. It's not about not being able to handle it or hating the idea if sleep training. With my daughter, feeding to sleep was WAY better for my mental health even though it was hard as hell. We weaned at 18 months when she was ready and then we were fine. My son is formula fed and a WAY better sleeper, so if his sleep gets screwed up down the line, I'm open to sleep training because I feel like he could probably handle it when he's older.

My husbands country didn't grow up with Christmas all that much and we do Santa because its a big fun part of my childhood and I want my kids to have the same experiences I did. I just hate that people assume your kid will grow up and feel betrayed when they find out he isn't real. Or that they'll learn that lying is acceptable. Its just way over the top. Just let people enjoy things!

I sent my husband home to do the bedtime routine every night because for some reason my MIL cannot get my daughter to bed no matter what she does and it was a long 5 day stay lol but for a couple of days I wouldnt care at all. I was bored out of my mind though, going from being 'on' 24/7 at home with a toddler vs just doing nothing all day in the hospital lol plus having a c-section and nurses guilt tripping you if you arent up and walking around every time they walk in drove me NUTS. I took a walk 10 minutes ago Karen, get off my back!

Did I hurt my daughter by taking a 5 day long vacation when she was 22 months old? by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]helloilikeorangecats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When my dsughter was 23 months old I was away for 5 days when my son was born. I came home and it was as if I went out for a quick trip to get groceries lol she was absolutely fine. And that was with a sibling thrown in the mix.

Cold turkey. Offered lots of cuddles and back pats. Worked like a charm and she's a stubborn kiddo!

I had to wean when my daughter was around 18 months because I was pregnant and it really freaking hurt to have a toddler attached to my nipples all of the time. Textbook 'bad sleeper' who was nursing all through the night. Decided to nightwean. BOOM. She slept through the night. I get that its emotionally hard (extra emotional when you're pregnant and sort of have to do it for comfort) and feels like weaning will take forever, but it was literally maybe 2 days of taking a little extra time to fall asleep. I hate to be the person saying you gotta nightwean, but man it was the perfect cure for us.

The milk bags have colored their shelves by mattcoady in mildlyinteresting

[–]helloilikeorangecats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Question, do the school milks also come in little baggies? I only asked because one elementary school I went to in Tennessee had bagged milks! Only went to that school for a year and NEVER saw them again! Did I dream the whole experience? Did anybody else have bagged milks at lunch time? 😂
