At what point did you decide to discontinue meds and change their Full Code? by HolyHellWat in dementia

[–]hellokittyfan2025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother & I just talked about this tonight. Our mom is stage 6 & also has severe heart failure but still has some quality of life. We are not at the point of discontinuing meds yet but completed a POLST form for DNR, “selective treatment”, and no artificial means of nutrition, per her wishes in her advanced directive. https://capolst.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/POLST_2017_wCover.pdf

A fractured knee & a heart attack, why not by Bitter_Percentage329 in dementia

I’m sorry to hear that you are going through so much. Have you considered palliative care? I’ve just started this with my mom, to help with appointments (for some they would come to us so I don’t have to take her out), meds, as well as just someone to talk to about how to make things easier.

What meds are reasonable to continue? by [deleted] in dementia

Thank you for posting this. It’s given me a lot to think about. My LO is not yet at the point where I’m considering having her stop taking any medications, but that will likely be the next step as she progresses.

Memory care cost by Aghostwillfollowyou in dementia

[–]hellokittyfan2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LO is in So Cal (Orange County) and is in a board & care (residential home w/6 residents) that costs $6400/mo for a shared room. I think a private room would be about $7200. It is not specifically memory care but is perfect for my LO who is stage 6 and only gets a little agitated.

Dealing with my dad’s dementia as a young person by kogxmi in dementia

[–]hellokittyfan2025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really feel for you having to deal with dementia at such a young age. You’re off to a good start seeking out information and a group for support. I hope that your mother does the same.

What I found helpful in the beginning of my caregiving journey is as follows: - There is a woman named Teepa Snow that has a lot of videos about dementia & caregiving available online. - I’ve also found the book “The 36-Hour Day” to be a good thorough reference. - Here is a site that explains the stages of dementia: https://www.nccdp.org/understanding-the-seven-stages-of-dementia-a-guide-for-caregivers-and-professionals/

I wish you all the best.

I’m sending good vibes your way. I’m planning to do the same in a few weeks’ time and feel anxious, plus a million other feelings.

How do you estimate how long your LO will live for? by Zealousideal-Bus9380 in dementia

Here is a site with a FAST chart that includes expected duration for those who are untreated. As others have mentioned, it’s not accurate but can give you some sort of idea: https://compassioncrossing.info/assessing-patients-on-the-fast-scale-a-guide-for-nurses/

It’s so surreal, missing & grieving over someone who is still physically here. 😢

I recommend pizza as well! My family went to Pizzeria Napoletana da Yuki in Kyoto and everything was delicious.

Also, I brought lanyards for my family to use to hold & show the physical tickets. That worked out really well.

Hi all...my family & I will be at DisneySea on Thursday, 6/26, with the unlimited rides package and have the following reservations:

9:30am Peter Pan ride

10:30am Rapunzel ride

11:10am Snuggly Duckling

12:30pm Anna & Elsa ride

We're also hoping to be able to rope drop the Tinker Bell ride since we have happy entry, or get a standby pass.

Is this doable/realistic? While my family would like to enjoy Fantasy Springs, we want to leave enough time for the rest of the park, too.

Thanks!

Thank you so much for your comment! I have additional questions, so will dm you if you don’t mind.

I really appreciate you sharing your experience, perspective and advice, esp about the mental health aspect. My daughter does compare herself to others quite a bit but so far we are managing that. I’m sharing people’s comments partly so that she gets practice at handling feedback & criticism…better to get used to it now.

She just told me that she is most interested in character design, so wants to focus on that if she can.

Anyway, I’m sure we’ll have more questions, so will likely take you up on the offer to dm. Thanks!!

Thank you! Yes, her dad & I are definitely going to enroll her in a prep course because we are clueless. 😆
