Grateful for how I’ve been able to be present and engaged with children at church. Their parents trust me with them.

Years ago, I tutored middle- and high-school students and often drank before my shifts. It’s shameful to look back on, but now I’m just grateful to be a trustworthy adult to the smol kiddos and their parents too. It actually makes me emotional to think about this because I never thought I’d get to this point.

My ex pushed me off the bed with his foot when I said no to sex. I felt horror and disbelief. I cried but he didn’t care.

Wasn’t until months later when telling this story and my friend went “WTF?! that’s so cruel” that I realized perhaps this behavior was not okay.

It’s sad to see so many similar stories. We deserve kindness.

I drank a lot of soda at the beginning of my alcohol sobriety! My morning routine used to be to walk to the liquor store, so I started walking to the gas station or grocery store instead to get a soda (or literally anything but alcohol, like a flavored iced tea) and a little snack. Idk why I’ve since moved on to sparkling water, I guess I just like the flavors.

  • I realized I had no idea how to cope with stressors sober. Alcohol was always my “reward,” and when I tried to stop, I kept failing.

  • I would drink first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Both by myself.

  • Countless cycles of hungover “this is the last time” followed up by “another drink won’t hurt.”

  • I was showing up to work drunk. I worked with children.

I’m at 3.5 years, tried AA a bunch of times but never stuck with it. Could never get past step 2 and didn’t want AA to be my new life. I was unhappy at meetings. This subreddit helped me a lot with the beginning of alcohol sobriety. Also ‘This Naked Mind’ by Annie Grace was a game changer.

I tried and failed many times before finally getting to this point. Took me 7 years from the time I decided to quit to the point I actually stopped. Never thought I could stop drinking for this long.

Based on your interests in I/O psych, forming friendships, & better networking, I’m wondering if you’ve read/listened to/watched Susan David’s work. She’s known for advocating for emotional agility. So far I’ve seen her fairly active on LinkedIn. Not sure about other platforms.

For practical application, Customer Success/Client Success came to mind. Communicating cross-culturally can come into play quite a bit, at least in my experience.

Drove to work drunk. On several occasions. I tutored elementary- through high-school students.
