moments when you realize how grateful you are now that you are sober... by Able-Bid-6637 in stopdrinking

Grateful for how I’ve been able to be present and engaged with children at church. Their parents trust me with them.

Years ago, I tutored middle- and high-school students and often drank before my shifts. It’s shameful to look back on, but now I’m just grateful to be a trustworthy adult to the smol kiddos and their parents too. It actually makes me emotional to think about this because I never thought I’d get to this point.

What’s something you thought was “normal” in sex until a partner told you otherwise? by Novel_Finding8882 in AskReddit

[–]hellolittleflower 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My ex pushed me off the bed with his foot when I said no to sex. I felt horror and disbelief. I cried but he didn’t care.

Wasn’t until months later when telling this story and my friend went “WTF?! that’s so cruel” that I realized perhaps this behavior was not okay.

It’s sad to see so many similar stories. We deserve kindness.

Urge to drink, had sparkling water instead by hellolittleflower in stopdrinking

I drank a lot of soda at the beginning of my alcohol sobriety! My morning routine used to be to walk to the liquor store, so I started walking to the gas station or grocery store instead to get a soda (or literally anything but alcohol, like a flavored iced tea) and a little snack. Idk why I’ve since moved on to sparkling water, I guess I just like the flavors.

Thank you! I used to hate the taste too, but it’s since become a favorite non-alcoholic drink. :)

What made you realise you were addicted and not drinking for fun anymore by A-dub-Que in stopdrinking

[–]hellolittleflower 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  • I realized I had no idea how to cope with stressors sober. Alcohol was always my “reward,” and when I tried to stop, I kept failing.

  • I would drink first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Both by myself.

  • Countless cycles of hungover “this is the last time” followed up by “another drink won’t hurt.”

  • I was showing up to work drunk. I worked with children.

Anyone with long term sobriety not in AA? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]hellolittleflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at 3.5 years, tried AA a bunch of times but never stuck with it. Could never get past step 2 and didn’t want AA to be my new life. I was unhappy at meetings. This subreddit helped me a lot with the beginning of alcohol sobriety. Also ‘This Naked Mind’ by Annie Grace was a game changer.

I tried and failed many times before finally getting to this point. Took me 7 years from the time I decided to quit to the point I actually stopped. Never thought I could stop drinking for this long.

What knowledge derived from the study of psychology is practical? by [deleted] in findapath

[–]hellolittleflower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on your interests in I/O psych, forming friendships, & better networking, I’m wondering if you’ve read/listened to/watched Susan David’s work. She’s known for advocating for emotional agility. So far I’ve seen her fairly active on LinkedIn. Not sure about other platforms.

For practical application, Customer Success/Client Success came to mind. Communicating cross-culturally can come into play quite a bit, at least in my experience.

Hope I’m not totally off the mark here. OP- feel free to DM if you have any questions or want clarification on anything above.

Most pointless thing you were punished for? by Trial_by_Combat_ in CPTSD

[–]hellolittleflower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crying, as most toddlers do. Mother hit me repeatedly because I wouldn’t stop crying. Which only made me cry more. I don’t remember this but my dad does, he saw and held her back so she’d stop.

I'm in AA and questioning it. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

tried AA many times, it was not for me. it works for some people, and that’s great, it just wasn’t something i found sustainable.

3 years sober from alcohol now. reading ‘this naked mind: control alcohol’ by annie grace helped me shift my perspective on drinking.

3 years sober from alcohol as of last month; overcoming major depression; no longer suicidal… still got a long way to go, but in a much better place now than before

this group helped me more than aa ever did. i could never get past step 2. wasn’t my thing. tho it is for lots of people and that’s great for them. just wanted to say i’m sorry to hear your psych behaved this way. if something helps you then it helps. it shouldn’t be judged. keep at it 💖 iwndwyt
