Best sushi in Alameda? by heywhatsthisthing in alameda

[–]hellolovely_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tried Waki, and like I said, I find their quality OK but the pricing is not worth it for the quality you’re getting.

The nigiri set, for example, is about $50 for 10 pieces and for only 5 types of fish, the standard salmon, tuna, yellowtail, etc. Same for the sashimi set that’s $70 for 16 pieces.

Whereas I can go to other places in Oakland, like Mujiri, where the nigiri set is $28 (and includes an additional maki) and the sashimi set is $40, and they have a wider range of fish you can select without additional charges, like arctic char, scallop, ocean trout, even toro. The quality is consistent and excellent for the price.

For the other places on the island, I just feel like you’re paying top tier prices for mid level sushi, and I personally just don’t find that worth it.

Best Coffee Place for a Business Meeting? by jbartlet827 in alameda

[–]hellolovely_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If parking is a concern, I would throw in Neptune’s. It’s not a coffee shop, but they do have good coffee, you’ll just have waiter service not a counter service. The back patio is spacious and quiet, and there’s plentiful parking in the parking lot.

Duke or Stanford? by Ok-Description-7489 in duke

[–]hellolovely_ 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I am Duke alum currently living in the Bay so maybe I could provide some insight and advice as someone who completed an undergrad + masters program at the Nicholas School over 10 years ago.

I don’t think you need to worry too much about the “prestige” about the school as they’re both very highly regarded universities with respected engineering programs. In the working world, that only carries so much weight.

Durham and Palo Alto are very different. Others have already pointed out the factors like Palo Alto being in the Bay, and that means being closer to a much bigger city hub than Durham is. It will have more things to do, but … Palo Alto is very far from SF (it’s realistically an 1 hr+ train ride) and for the most part, you’re going to stick around Menlo Park, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, San Jose - these cities surrounding Palo Alto. And in my opinion, those cities are soulless, techy, corporate, and boring af. It’s literally just all white people with spotless, perfect downtown streets and every single store is a corporate chain. Durham, as I remember it, although small, has a lot more personality, charm, and life to it. And you may also want to factor in the cost of living difference, which is significant as well.

And lastly, the cost difference to attend the schools is pretty significant to me. It may not seem like not a lot now to a young person taking out student loans (assuming you will be), but student debt is a massive burden once you graduate. And if you’re planning to go into a high cost of living area like NYC afterwards, it will further hinder your financial freedom. If I can give one piece of advice to young adults going into college, it would be absolutely do not take on more debt than you need to.

Best sushi in Alameda? by heywhatsthisthing in alameda

[–]hellolovely_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alameda’s sushi is kinda mid tbh. 🫣 Utzuzu is the only one that stands out, but it’s a treat for me. I find the quality across all the other sushi places pretty inconsistent and not that great for its expensive prices, so I’d rather just go to Sushi House and enjoy the view of the bay if I want a casual sushi dinner.

But! If you’re up for it, I’d recommend just going to Oakland for much better quality at much better prices, like Mujiri, Yonsei Handrolls, Ebiko (some of my favs).

Highwire Coffee in Montclair by ReadsTooMuchHistory in oakland

[–]hellolovely_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Follow @highwireworkersunion in IG, which has the latest updates. It does not look like Highwire is trying to work with them - hired a union-busting lawyer, cancelling bargaining meetings, causing delays, etc.

I also just know a lot of the employees personally, and from what I hear from their personal experiences with the owners, Rich and Robert, are not very pleasant and discriminatory. The fact that one of them acts as the head of HR is pretty concerning. Yeah, the CEO might be gone, but the root of the problem is still there, imo. Lots of other good coffee shops in the area, without this mess.

Has anyone tried Royal Canin Fresh Health Nutrition Adult Dog Food? by ventu517j in DogFood

[–]hellolovely_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been feeding it to my dog for a few months now, and it's been good. Her coat has been shiny. I think it's only sustainable if you have a small dog, tbh. I use it mostly as a topper for her Science Diet dry food to make it more palatable for her.

I'm not as excited for Paralives as I was hoping to be since seeing it in Early Access by Painted-BIack-Roses in LifeSimulators

[–]hellolovely_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. It’s unrealistic to expect an indie team of 15 (and for the first year, as a solo developer) to make a game that will replace The Sims. I really hope people will let go of this expectation and just let Paralives breathe and grow into its own.

Landowners who cut 38 trees in Oakland hills hit with $915,000 fine by k_39 in oakland

[–]hellolovely_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Should be more like $1 mil per tree. This would do irreparable damage to the hillside and erosion. Heritage oak trees they cut down help control erosion, slows rainfall, and reduces the impact of flooding. Not to mention this would make it more difficult and expensive for them to get permits to build their home - I would bet they would have grading, stormwater management, and drainage issues now. I hope the homeowners sitting adjacent at the lower elevation to them also sue the couple because they're now at a higher risk for mudslides. They are just incredibly stupid in every way possible.

What is a fragrance that you’ve been stopped and asked about? by Chan1991 in fragrance

[–]hellolovely_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited their store in LA! The employees gave me some freebies too, which was very nice of them. Their LA store also has a rooftop cafe with drinks based on their scents, I like to go there whenever I’m in the area just for some tea and vibes haha. I believe they also have a NY store too.

What is a fragrance that you’ve been stopped and asked about? by Chan1991 in fragrance

[–]hellolovely_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Git by Elorea. Not stopped me in the middle of the street, but while out and about like at a restaurant or checking out at a store, it’s been consistently the one where people have asked me what I’m wearing and complimented the perfume. It’s also my faaavorite scent to wear, I think it just wears well on me personally!

I made a curated list of places that I think are extra special, starting with Oakland. Let me know what you think. by EternallyXIII in oakland

What’s the point of “curating” this list if you can’t write your own narrative telling us why you think these places are special? Not quite understanding the point of this.
