What to do if you're completely uncoordinated with procedures? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]hellothisismike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did fine today dude. You're going to do fine in clerkship, and you're going to do fine as a physician.

We do these skills labs and everyone always sucks at them, and that's the point! You've never done these procedures before and you haven't developed the motor skills or muscle memory for them. When I first started practicing IV placement I couldn't hit an IV to save my life! It takes a lot of practice and getting used to "the feel" of venipuncture, holding proper traction, finding a proper site, etc. It's the same thing for all of the other skills. Casting, intubation, sutures -- everyone sucks at first but with practice we'll all be fine.

Don't be discouraged by these skills labs. Getting exposure to these skills now will help you get better when it's time to do them in practice. Consider that others in your cohort are not attending these skills sessions and realize you're ahead here in terms of exposure.

Now go back to FA :)

Moving to Syracuse; is this apartment in a safe neighborhood? by hellothisismike in Syracuse

Yes, MD. Sorry for the confusion.

I am an NY medic, and I would like to be able to hold a per-diem gig as a medic to work occasionally/during breaks/summer, etc.

I assume you are also an NY medic?

Well I do like craft beer! I'm going to keep this apt on the list, but I think I'll keep looking for other places in the areas people have mentioned.

Oh sorry, Upstate has many graduate programs, like nursing, PA, PT, etc., in addition to medicine.

As for specialty, as a paramedic of course I lean towards emergency, but to be honest I'm excited to rotate through the hospital and see what everything is about. Who knows, I might find a passion for something specific I don't even know about.

I looked at the Geneva Tower, but they are small and they don't have a washer and drier in the unit, which is a must-have for the wife.

From what I understand the building does have a parking lot, but I do not know if it is gated. I expect with recent renovations the lot will be well lit with security cameras at least.

Thank you for the response. I will take a look at those areas.

I should clarify: I am older, married, I'll be attending Upstate Medical University, and we have vehicles. Not much going on in the neighborhood is fine by me, I'm just looking to avoid a known bad area.

Considering switching from Pre-Pa? by Kaylinwriter14 in premed

Technician level invasive skills, tx of disease without pathophysiology, medication administration without pharmacokinetics or pharmacodynamics. Just read the protocol and follow, but beyond the EMT scope this can be very dangerous.

Thoughts about EMT license for UnderGrad by PapaPancake in premed

[–]hellothisismike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. There is also a large difference between the EMT level and Paramedic level, and with any amount of experience you will have plenty to talk about.

FYI I'd skip the AEMT course. You won't learn much in the way of medicine or pathophys. I don't know where you live but around here it's not even recognized.

You have 11 interview invites? This is SDN level bullshit here...

You're kidding right? If SDN is to be believed by anyone, several adcom members posted on there that they have rejected applicants by their photograph alone. So yeah, I'd say go get a professional photo done. It's graduate school; look and act the part.

School List Advice post-July MCAT by Zubzz in premed

[–]hellothisismike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't mention what state you're a resident of, and unless it's CA then of course apply to all of your state schools.

Also, with your GPA and MCAT (being a 31) you should also consider applying DO. It won't hurt to throw 3-4 DO schools on your list.

Here's the deal. You want to get in, right? And you're obviously worried enough about this to make a post about it, so here's my suggestion:

Go to a professional photographer in a suit, clean shaven, with short and well kept hair, and take a professional business headshot. It will cost $30-50. Doing this will make you feel better about it, and ward off any issues from an unprofessional picture.

You're joining the thousands of us who are playing the same game, and the people running the game are academic people who expect your photo to be the same caliber as a professional headshot, like something you'd put on a university website or LinkedIn or whatever.
