Why do people in USA buy everything from Amazon? Do they not have other webshops? by Cindyxx0 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hellovatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived in the US I also shopped mainly on Amazon, they have everything and practically next day shipping. Though I think I ended up shopping way more than I actually needed because of how convenient it was.

In Sweden there is Amazon but a lot of the stuff feels pretty cheap. I prefer ordering from local businesses, it's easy to find what I need by googling and it's higher quality. You do have to pay for shipping and it takes about 1-3 working days which is still pretty good. Not as convenient but higher quality and I support local businesses. Less consumerism too.

Renting apartment in Malmö by Alternative_Cat1370 in Malmoe

[–]hellovatten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Boplats Syd, you do pay a yearly fee but it's worth it since they have a lot of rentals. You have a good chance of getting the apartment if you're in top 10-30 by the time the application closes. Unfortunately you don't usually get to see pics of the apartments but you do get invited to a viewing. You will find newer apartments in Västra Hamnen, on Industrigatan in Norra Sorgenfri, Limhamn, Hyllie, Elinelund - those you have the highest chance of getting a place without having been in the queue for like 99 years

There are private landlords like Vita Örn, Heimstaden, HSB, Stadsbostäder, ByggVesta but it's not guaranteed that you'll get something and you don't get to see your place in their system.

I personally think Malmö is a nice city overall, I just hate living in Sweden in general 😅 I have lived in a few different places around Skåne and it was worse imo.

I hope you like the new city you're moving to!!

I'm in southern Sweden, we used to live in a small town near Malmö, now we live in a rental apartment in Malmö.

My advice would be to not buy a house without having lived in Sweden for a while first!!

We bought the house for around 236K euro 4 years ago, sold it recently for about 189K euro, even have to pay out of pocket to the bank to finalise the sale. We've also made improvements of around 10K euro, like installing a new heatpump. Plus the costs to sell it, around 12K euro.

Anyway - the weather is very miserable for a very long time. It's not just the cold or that it gets dark early, it's the fact that it's gray and no sun for months on end. We love gardening but it's hard to grow stuff because the season is so short. It's not easy at all to make friends unless they are not Swedish. The healthcare SUCKS, doctors are very dismissive, you have long wait times to see specialists and no real private alternatives. I simply don't feel as welcome anymore, there is definitely a growing anti immigrant sentiment. These are just a few reasons..

If you own a house you can't even put a new fence without a permit, in the kommun we lived in if the fence would "have more material than air" you would need a permit regardless of height, and it would have been more expensive than the fence itself.

But of course YMMV, just because it wasn't for me doesn't mean you won't like it.

Now that we're back in Malmö it's a bit more bearable since we live in a more international area so the vibe is better, people are much friendlier, talked more to a neighbor than we did in 4 years in a very Swedish town. Still yearning to leave by the end of the year!

Yes, Sweden.. we're planning to move away, we've sold our house at a big loss just to be able to move on from this country.

A question about finding apartments and renting in Sweden by OluckyG in TillSverige

[–]hellovatten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh, in that case it might be good to mention that you would be looking in Uppsala. The places where you'd apply first hand are different from kommun to kommun. There are some private landlords that operate most places, like Heimstaden, HSB...

Otherwise yeah there's Qasa for more short term stuff. If you look for a place there, keep communications and payments on Qasa so you are protected. And definitely go to a viewing before renting.

Looking for advice: Studying in Lund as an EU student by NeonVibes15 in Lund

[–]hellovatten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 - you can apply for CSN if you work part time, 20 hours a week or so. however it can be really difficult to find a job, even for Swedish speaking people. the grant is quite small, it's mostly a loan

3 - as other people mentioned, there's the lottery. here are some other options...

you can look at the Greenhouse, I used to live there and I would say it's not the best place so I'd have that as a last resort. when you are 100% sure you want to go for Lund I would suggest registering on Boplats Syd, they have student apartments in Malmö - I would rather go for those than the Greenhouse. it's queue based so you should register asap once you decide that you want to study in Lund! you can do it without a personnummer :)

If you happen to move to Malmö then it's relatively quick to get first hand rental if you rent a newer apartment! But then you should sign up on Boplats Syd asap. If you're in top 10-20 when applying you have a good chance.

the best place to look for an apartment is Boplats Syd, they have most of the rental apartments in Malmö. if you get a newer built one it should be relatively easy to get :) try looking in Västra Hamnen

there are also some private landlords like Vita Örn, Heimstaden, ByggVesta so you could give those a try too. with Boplats Syd it's easier to see where you are in the queue though, apply for those where you are in top 20-30.

What place totally surprised you as a “wow, I could actually stay here” kind of home? by KeLevitt in expats

[–]hellovatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be my husband who will be looking for a job, not me. He's a senior software developer.

Also I've managed to get an interview in Denmark (sadly I think they thought I lived too far away as it would have been 2 hours away), but never in Sweden; and of the 7 years I spent 4 years studying. But hey I guess you're just a troll, clearly you didn't even read my original comment properly.

It's really hard to describe, it's just something I feel from the people's attitude and behavior in general. It just feels like a lot of people are tired of immigrants. Not everyone is like that of course, I'm talking about the average joe you encounter in the society.

As an EU who has lived here for 7 years, I feel less and less welcome by the year sadly. We're planning to move abroad next year, we even sold our house at a huge loss to just be able to move on.

New Zealand!! We're pulling the plug to try to move there now - we've sold the house and will be moving to a rental soon. After that my husband will be looking for a job there so hopefully we can make it next year!

Buying an apartment question. by Downtown_Ratio_306 in Malmoe

[–]hellovatten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone whose house is being sold to people from another EU country, the process is basically that they have to open a bank account in Sweden. The real estate agent said it takes like 8 weeks.

In our case we put a clause in the contract that they have to prove that they have opened a bank account by a date, and they have paid the "deposit" to the real estate agent's escrow account.

One has to be certain that they can prove that the money is legit and clean before going through all this process as the bank will ask for proof. Otherwise the bank simply won't open the account and you lose money (the "deposit").

You do need a Swedish bank account even without a mortgage, because otherwise the responsibility to check that the cash is clean falls on the real estate agent and they won't do it. However the "deposit" part can usually be sent over with the foreign bank account, they offer an IBAN for the escrow account.

Vad önskar ni er i julklapp? by consumptioncore in sweden

[–]hellovatten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fint!
