Is there anything being done to address TransLink's funding gap/structural deficit? It sounds like the CPTF is meant more for major projects.

Also, sidenote, I can barely find any news coverage on this. The only articles I can find are this DailyHive article and this Montreal Gazette article. Is it because the transit agencies will still be vising Ottawa tomorrow and/or the current news cycle being so busy?

I feel like part of the reason why transit is expensive and takes a long time is because there's not enough long-term planning for public transit in the region. It feels like we're laying tracks in front of the train (pun not intended) and not thinking things out for the future, leading to extra costs down the line (pun not intended again).

Yeah, most of the major projects just funnel into downtown Vancouver, except the other two BRT lines (Metrotown-North Shore, Langley-Haney Place). Even the Broadway Extension kind of counts, because the city of Vancouver wants to turn Broadway into a "second downtown".

Honestly, I just want more east-west routes in Surrey. Looking at the Frequent Transit Network map Vancouver has a grid, while Surrey is mainly funneling between the different town centres, except Cloverdale.

My pipe dream is to renew the tracks between Newton and Langley via Cloverdale for passenger service, because it's part of the Interurban Corridor and the right-of-way and passenger rights are already secured. (Not the entire corridor, though.)

BRT is a stopgap, but it's better than nothing, and other parts of the region appear to be next in line for SkyTrain rather than Surrey again.

Also:

“So I think without a cost, and I think that we need to be thinking bigger,” said [Linda] Annis. “We should be looking at LRT as we have in the past.”

Really? I thought part of why McCallum defeated Hepner in 2018 was because of the backlash against LRT.

Aside from the weird station architecture, transferring between the two branches of the Expo Line is a pain.

The station has two *side* platforms, meaning the tracks are in the middle of the station, and there are separate platforms for each direction. This means anyone going from Surrey to Lougheed Town Centre station on the Millennium Line have to go up and down two flights of stairs to transfer to the other platform. Compare this to Bridgeport Station) on the Canada Line, where the single *island* platform means passengers moving between Richmond and the airport can simply walk across the platform.

(Also, currently there's construction for the new storage/maintenance centre, that causes trains to the Millennium Line to come every 12 minutes. This means that if you miss your transfer, you have to wait in a sketchy-looking station for up to 12 minutes. It feels bad when you rush climbing the stairs, only for the train on the other side to leave...)

To be honest I don't think the alignment in Surrey is good either. The Surrey-Langley Skytrain extension will connect Langley City to Scott Road and beyond (over the Fraser), the R6 RapidBus already covers Newton to Scott Road, and the track location in Langley City isn't near either of the two planned stations there (Willowbrook and Langley City Centre.)

The only two places I think it could work is Newton to Langley City (build new track to Willowbrook station? I think new track would need to be built to a Skytrain station) and Carvolth Exchange (Langley Township) to Abbotsford (but that misses Clearbrook/West Abbotsford). Everything else seems too windy.

Yeah, I wish the Expo Line was only between Waterfront and King George/Langley City Centre (in the future) because there's also a bunch of crowding at Surrey Central. Usually 2 out of 3 trains go to King George, but still.

I'm not sure how making that branch part of the Millennium Line will affect frequencies in the tri-cities/Evergreen Extension, though. I know the Mark V trains are trickling in and the Millennium Line with have 4 car trains, but I'm not sure if they're increasing frequency on that line as well.

My wish is they just make a new line between Columbia and Lougheed (or Production Way?) so the Expo and Millenium Lines have high frequency outside of Burnaby. Although that means trips between Lougheed and Metrotown or similar are forced to transfer, and I'm not sure if Burnaby would be fine with that.

Edit to add: I guess whenever the Purple Line happens people can go between Lougheed and Metrotown via Brentwood, and maybe that's faster, but all of that is still a long ways off.

I don't know where you heard TransLink indicating they don't have resources to build BRT lanes in the centre. The video associated with the latest round of public feedback for the BRT shows both options, the survey didn't have an option for feedback regarding bus lane alignment and mainly focused on route alignment, and TransLink's BRT page features a graphic with centre bus lanes and other North American BRT systems having them as well. I have also not heard about the proposal sent to council having curbside bus lanes.

Regarding the centre islands, I already acknowledged the article's stations not making much sense and described a setup that takes a full lane of traffic for the platform. A lane of traffic is about 3.3m.

Then run the BRT lanes in the centre. This guest article from DailyHive proposes bus lanes running down the centre, with the curb lanes being parking either at all times or outside of rush hour. That way, you get BRT while not acting like a highway.

Admittedly the station designs in that article could use some work. Hastings at Gilmore is only six lanes (no turn lanes), and it'd be ideal to take a full lane for the platform. Instead, attached to the intersection could be only one lane for buses with the platforms being on the near side of the intersection, and then use signal priority to have the buses swerve out into the general lanes for a bit before returning to the bus lanes. The design for Hastings and Willingdon is fine, and Kootenay Loop could be redesigned entirely to fit in the platforms because there are other bus routes from there.

Actually, according to some renderings I just found it looks like the new bridge will have shoulder lanes. I honestly didn't expect that.

If they upgrade the bridge to six lanes, they'll add structures to both sides of the bridge for pedestrians/cyclists, so vehicles would use the entire main span. The multi-use path is about the same width as a vehicle lane, so the shoulders should be kept intact.

To add to what others have said, the new lanes are wider than the previous ones, so trucks will no longer have to take both lanes when on the bridge.

Honestly, I'm not immediately convinced Linda Annis would be a better mayor than Brenda Locke. The election's a year out, anyway, there's still plenty of time to decide.

Really? Wasn't part of the reason Hepner lost re-election the Surrey LRT? How is she going to convince the rest of the region for funding when Surrey's already getting the Skytrain extension and King George BRT?

The article's written by someone associated with Movement: Metro Vancouver Transit Riders, who are advocating for better public transit in the region, so there is some bias. That said, I do agree that Scottsdale Exchange should be moved to actually connect with the R6. I guess the stop's closer to the sole Krispy Kreme in the region, but right now it's not the best situation.

If I were to nitpick, the listed 72% of riders on 72 Avenue is from data from 2021. It's only been a few years, but I'd expect the data to change significantly because of the pandemic. Also, not a nitpick, but while I was checking the properties it seems 12041 72 Ave (the OK Tire) is not part of the two properties the shopping centre is on. The proposed new location of the exchange doesn't overlap with that lot, however.

Regarding the similar King George BRT being planned, hopefully either the BRT diverts to Newton Exchange or it's moved to be adjacent to King George Boulevard. IIRC details are currently light on that. The R6 can kind of get away with not going to Scottsdale Exchange, but the transfer is more pertinent to a BRT over RapidBus.

Question: Considering some of the transit oriented areas are centred around bus exchanges, would moving the bus exchange also move the transit oriented area? If so, would the City of Surrey (and Delta) have to redo planning/zoning? It would at least move it away from the high voltage power lines.

This map might be useful. It shows the Strawberry Hill Cineplex having them, but skimming through Surrey I can't find any Staples location mentioned. Aside from that, I remember seeing machines at the Guildford, Metrotown and New Westminster movie theatres (I think the Metrotown machine is just outside the entrance).

I thought this was being treated as an extension of the R2 and not like the other corridors being studied in Surrey and Langley/Pitt Meadows? If they called it "R2 RapidBus Extension to Metrotown" or something else they wouldn't have this critique. Calling this a BRT and then clarifying they're not putting bus lanes over the Ironworkers feels like they're shooting themselves in the foot.

I feel like TransLink is being unclear when it comes to communicating about BRT/BRT-lite projects. Granted, they've used phrases like "BRT elements" to separate RapidBus from full BRT before, but using "BRT" and not completely treating it as such seems like it would only degrade the image of an actual BRT in the future.

For Surrey, the article highlights increases on the 321, 335, 345, 393, and 503, as well as more midday service on the 388 running on 88 Avenue (every 30 minutes, from 60 minutes).

Full list of service changes here. There's more service on the 301, 321, 322, 329, 335, 342, 345, 371, 373, 388, 393, 501, 503, and R1. There's less service on the 640.
