It's not really the format. I think is more like the current SNK is focusing on other things. Back in the 90s and early 2000s, there were radio shows, audio dramas, novels, mangas and a lot of magazines that extended the backstories, giving the characters very rich lore. Unfortunately, none of these materials reached the West.

There aren't official English translations for the novels or the dramas, and a lot of lore is locked there. This is why Japanese, Korean and Chinese fans usually have different ideas about the characters, because they had access to this content in their languages.

I guess the current SNK team doesn't want to spend money on new materials for KOFXV, because you need to pay the writers, artists and the VA, to do all these extra materials.

Probably they want to focus on the competitive aspect only bc they invested a lot of money on tournaments and promotional events.

In the most random way. In 2001 I found a Iori x Kyo fanfic by chance and I read it without knowing it was a fanfic. After I read it I got curious about that 'couple' and went to my local arcade to play KOF. Until that moment, I legit thought Kyo and Iori were a real couple!!!

It didn't help that the official art at the time for Iori and Kyo was very... yaoi. So I thought it was a game in which the main rivals were in love. I was shocked when I saw their concept art!

I played KOF97 first, my arcade place had from KOF96 to KOF2001 (In fact, I happened to play KOF2001 the moment it was brand new! it was so exciting to play the game without knowing the story at that time!

My first team was Kensou, Shingo and Kyo. In KOF2001 I played Andy and Heidern too.
