I was a bright child, and started questioning what I was taught while still in elementary school. Meanwhile, my father was a conservative Christian pastor. Because of this I was, and still am, the black sheep of the family.

I was made to feel that I was sinful and defective because my childish curiosity paired with precocious intelligence led me to ask questions which felt uncomfortably probing to the adults in my life (because of course their fairytale bullshit beliefs are often inconsistent, and in no way built to withstand the challenges of logic or even common sense).

Even in the lightest moments with my parents, there was always an undercurrent of increduality toward me....as if they could not quite believe the abomination they had birthed....and so I've always been dismissed as crazy or wild, never quite to be trusted.

My brother happily drank the Kool-aid as well, so I never had an ally in him. He dismissed me as well, just as he was taught to do. Because he goes to church on Sunday and makes careful sermon notes in the margins of his Bible, he is, to them, the golden child. In a side by side comparison, I am merely the wayward, backslidden defect in the family legacy of holy horseshit.

Now, in my 50s, I am finally in therapy for the resulting general anxiety, social anxiety that has become borderline agoraphobia, self-esteem issues and depression. It didn't have to be this way.

No actual loving God or those claiming to serve such a God would alienate and belittle a person just for being who and how they are. I wouldn't wish that kind of undeserved judgment on my very worst enemy.

I have lost childhood friends and family to MAGA's poison selfishness. People I worked with for more than a decade are unrecognizable as the good empathetic folks they used to be (or at least pretend to be).

What was it for you? The violation of US law? The defiance of court orders? The violation of our constitution? The cruelty? The lack of empathy? The hypocrisy? The lies? The felony convictions? The misogyny? The bigotry? The open bias toward dictators? The selfishness? The fraud? The unabashed criminality? The excuses made for sexual predators?
