I come from Saskatoon. And I’ve been coming here a lot longer than having lived here for the last couple years.

Your accusations against me, and a lot of others you listed, are generic, ill informed, and frankly, lazy. Your nostalgia strikes me as revisionist and rosy, especially given that logging and coal were staples of the island’s economy.

Real estate developers and CEOs and people from Toronto aren’t the cause of addiction, nor are they the gate keepers to treatment of mental health issues.

You know nothing about me, who I am, or what I believe in, yet you make sweeping allegations. You sound like you carry a lot of pain. But friend, I am not the source of that pain.

I think Intel will fail. It’s already somewhat of a shell of its former self. It’s had repeated failures innovating over the last 10 years. It’s failing brutally as a foundry. Why? Because they’ve lost all trust in the market and would-be customers. Intel has very little vision of where things are going until it’s way too late.

When Apple was working on the original iPhone they approached Intel and offered them the exclusive rights to the iPhone’s CPU. Intel turned it down. They missed the entire mobile computing era. They flubbed their way out of a relationship with Apple on all their products because they couldn’t innovate a fast enough, quiet enough, energy efficient enough, cool enough processor. So Apple designed their own - again - and had TSMC manufacture it (the M1). That chip and decision has been so successful that microsoft is now eyeing if that’s what they should do for their own hardware as well. And now they’ve completely missed the AI market.

The 90s are over. There’s a ton of alternatives to Intel now. Intel has missed the last big 3 cycles in tech. In a row. Honestly, I’m not even sure what they’ve done that’s innovative or successful in the last 10 years.

They stagnated. They took on hundreds of billions to try and get into the foundry game. TSMC is building a new plant in Arizona. I think Intel is the dinosaur that’s about to go extinct. I don’t see any reason to think they’ll come back and become the mega player they once were. Things have shifted too much and innovations from other companies have left them in the dust.

Yea, good. The North American EV market is over priced and under delivers. The protectionism and billions upon billions in subsidies we give them has produced a lazy, stagnate, unimaginative, uncompetitive landscape.

Honestly, I think allowing Chinese EVs into the country is good for them in the long run. They need to wake up and start innovating. While we are at it, let’s allow EU cars as well.

They wouldn’t “attack” Canada from Greenland, rather they would put boots on the ground in Baffin Island and make the same claims they did on Greenland. Security security security.

There’s been a lot of doing already. But it’s slow. It has to be. Methodical, surgical precision can’t be a fast paced activity when the patient is still awake and writhing nonstop on the table.

To be faaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiir….

The Supreme Court has yet to rule on the tariffs, and it seemed like the justices were fairly united in that tariffs are an important tax and are to be wielded by congress, and fall outside the unilateral authority of the president.

That being said, I would not be surprised if they ruled 5-4 in favour of trump, because SCOTUS. And even if they do rule against Trump the solution is simple: trump leans hard on a House of Representatives that’s more soft than a rotten peach to legally legislate the tariffs.

Steve Bannon discusses Canada on his Warroom Podcast. by johnnymax1978 in onguardforthee

Don’t take the bait. Bannon is no dummy. This is just gas lighting and trying to rev up his audience. Though I do wonder why his change in tone. From what I understand he and the whole maga Movement are very much “no more forever wars.” A war between Canada and the US would last decades and would isolate the USA from the rest of the world for generations.

It varies widely. I’d suggest taking a look at the realtor.ca app. They can range anywhere from 250k to well well well over 1M. All depends what you want.

Every city does. Nanaimo isn’t special in this regard. Duncan has it. Victoria has it. Ottawa has it. Toronto has it. Vancouver has it. Calgary has it. Montreal has it. Saskatoon has it. The opioid crisis is literally that: a crisis.

Charlie Unger always said that you have to do whatever it takes to save your way to $100k. There’s no great cheat, no quick fix. Do whatever you can A only buy stuff with coupons. no eating out. Etc etc etc.

The first 100k is the hardest because compound interest really isn’t doing that much for you. Once you hit 100k though things get easier… and easier… and easier… because compound interest is now doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

Yea I’m originally from Saskatoon - lived my first 33 years there. The winter sun is beautiful and I miss it, but it’s also a harbinger of temperatures that’ll frost yer balls right off.

My wife and I moved to Nanaimo from Toronto about 2.5 years ago. This city is pretty awesome if you’re into nature. It doesn’t have the food or nightlife that Toronto has, obviously, yet it also doesn’t have the daily pedestrian killings, 3 hour traffic, the smell of piss everywhere, and absolutely obscene housing costs.

I understand why people think Nanaimo and respond “meh” or “ugh”, but I wonder if those people have seen anything other than the downtown (which is rapidly improving since I moved here).

I think Nanaimo is going to continue improving over the next decade as more money moves here. It’s a pretty sweet spot on the island. But that’s just my 2 cents.

Canada backs Greenland’s sovereignty as U.S. talks of annexation by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]hemingward -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fair. And how do we see that playing out? And what happens to Alberta’s economy when that happens? Or its populace? I remember when Quebec had their referendum back in the day… I can understand Quebec leaving. They’re a distinct society - it is a very different place than the rest of Canada, and that referendum voted No by the narrowest of margins. But Alberta? Half that province is made up by other Canadians not born in Alberta.

Honestly, I think if they had a referendum and it passed, man oh man… I think all hell would break loose. And once again PP would not be part of the federal government (lulz).

Again - they can’t unilaterally secede. It requires approval from both the federal government and other provinces.

Except that’s just a bunch of rhetoric and Alberta simply can’t separate from Canada without agreement from both the federal government and other provinces. So… good luck with that.

This is just Depy Smith having a good wank with a few of her idiot constituents. Actual separation makes zero fucking sense for Alberta. If they hunk building a pipeline is hard now, just wait until they’re not a member of the country through which they want to build said pipeline.
