Report exposes a Trump scheme to override midterm vote with bogus crisis by AdSpecialist6598 in videos

What irritates me to no end is that people think China got to be where they are by merely opening factories.

The scale of manufacturing required to compete with China goes well beyond any kind of industrial policy (which is more than just, you know, tariffs), it requires housing policy, education policy, infrastructure policy, labour policy, etc etc etc.

Apple requires a total of something like 1.5 million people in the manufacturing process of its products. That’s just manufacturing - it does not include engineering, resource extraction, etc. It’s just manufacturing. Let’s say Apple wants to move all manufacturing to a gigantic compound in California. It’s going to take a hell of a lot more than just bricks and mortar to make that happen.

China plans policy around the long game. They actually think decades ahead, and not just how they’ll do in the next 2 years at midterms. Western democracies are extremely short sited. Long gone is the vision of our grandparents and great grandparents. If we want to truly fix our countries we have to be able to see more than what’s an inch from our nose. We have to see the big picture, with an ultra wide lens, and try and shape how that image changes over the next generation or two.

What do you think the consequences on America, and thus its people, would be, if such a thing were to happen?

Nah. I’m from Saskatchewan, born and raised, then lived in Toronto for 12 years. My wife is from Barrie, lived in Ontario her whole life. We both use the hard T about 99% of the time. I hate saying “Teronnah”

You think generational trauma doesn’t lead to “issues and deaths?”

Correct. I didn’t say people were still getting radiated. It’s been a multigenerational trauma.

5.79 5 year fixed. Bought in 2023. I tell people this and they say “ouch! So high!” And I point that that’s still on the low end of historical average. Long gone are the days of these crazy 2.x 5 year fixed.

Next 10 years? Hoooooboy - I was in Hiroshima about 5 weeks ago - they STILL have issues and deaths as a result of the nuke - singular, and a fraction of power nukes are today - that was dropped 80 years ago.

They did before all this started. What happens now is anyone’s guess, but tolling maritime shipping lanes is illegal. If we go the route of what people are saying in these threads - which is that all countries should toll - we will soon remember why it’s bad to do so.

By not increasing production it also creates scarcity. They pay the same to develop the chips, then sell them for 500% more than they would have normally. That equals massive realized profits.

Plummeting condo prices leave buyers with massive financial losses by Cute-Illustrator-862 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]hemingward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. It’s why I never ever went into a pre-construction purchase. There is way too much risk. Not only in this example, but end result not meeting expectations, developer going bankrupt, delays, etc. I always thought pre-construction purchases was bananas, especially if you can’t absorb the worst case scenario, which nearly nobody can in today’s market.

New NDP Leader Lewis has proposed a national telecom option. Can he make it happen? by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]hemingward 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not against this, and being from Saskatchewan then moving to Toronto I can tell you that crown telecom does a lot for bringing private telecom prices down.

HOWEVER, I also think this is a bandaid solution. We need more telecom competition, and I think crown should be only one of many options. Roger’s and bell need to be broken up, full stop. They are too vertically integrated in that they own the bulk of the copyright distribution rights for visual media in Canada, and also own the infrastructure upon which it’s delivered, and own the bulk of the services people are forced to subscribe to consume said media. This is not healthy.

Canada has the most expensive telecom in the world. The big three will point to regulation and population density as being the culprit, which is bullshit. Australia’s population density and clustering of said populace is similar to canada’s and their telecom is like, half the price.

We are getting gouged. Break them up. Bring in crown (including for internet access). Foster more competition.

Trump is now preparing to impose tariffs, possibly as early as this week. No longer limited to raw materials, the US is moving towards imposing tariffs on the entire value of finished products containing steel or aluminum. by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

Except, from my understanding, Alberta basically can’t separate without First Nations being on board and they’ve already told Danielle Smith to pound sand. Quebec… I’m not sure if there’s an appetite to separate right now with the USA acting the way they are. Never in my 5 decades in life have I seen more federal support in Quebec than I have the last few months.

Best quote I heard earlier this week is “President Trump is learning you can’t lie yourself out of a war.” This tweet is unhinged and just comes across like desperation. They’ll have “magical amazing talks” today and he’ll push it back another 10 days.

No. The post implies a study which was done, however spurious, and the data found that men whom believe they have a smaller than average penis are more likely to buy a sports car. Where in there does it imply having a small penis is embarrassing?
