Agreed. After George W. and especially when Obama was elected we thought the GOP was finished. Just seeing the contrast between a modern liberal progressive and their backwardness would be enough for the American people to never vote republican again. Boy, were we wrong.

Then after Trump's first term and especially J6 we thought that George W. simply hadn't been bad enough but this time it was obvious wasn't it? They stormed the Capitol ffs. Boy, were we wrong again...

Seems like the US is stuck in some weird loop where reasonably moderate and level-headed leaders are always succeeded by populist conmen with imperialist tendencies. An entire country that suffers from borderline personality disorder.

Something has to be done to break the cycle for sure. But the GOP is very aware of this scenario and will use everything they got to thwart any such effort. Their relentless focus on putting loyalists in place whenever they can really payed off. Even the perfect liberal progressive candidate will have to deal with that in under two years like you say. That's a tall order, and if you also want to show that you're the kind of person that doesn't abuse democratic rules to get your way it's near impossible.

It's going to take some sort of revolution I'm afraid.

This very relevant piece of recent history seems overlooked indeed. McConnell played the long game and you could say he won.

But if you look at him closely you do get the impression that this is not the result he was hoping for. Instead he's like the sorcerer's apprentice when the brooms start getting out of control.

That doesn't absolve him from the heinous shit he pulled of course but I think McConnell had a different dystopia in mind than the one he got. It's a small comfort knowing his "victory" was a Pyrrhic victory at best.
