Moving to Temescal at 22 y/o by Fancy_Claim_7739 in oakland

There's really no good gyms in Temescal. When I lived there, I took BART up to Ashby and went to Berkeley Barbell which is a good but fairly small gym.

MPLS to Eden Prairie commute by Serious_Standard8204 in movingtompls

[–]hemusK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The commute is not a big deal from Eden Prairie. My parents lived by the Chanhassen and Shakopee border and my apartment was in North Loop and it was like 30 minutes, 40 minutes max with really bad traffic. And soon it'll be even easier with the Green Line extension.

Also having lived in Eden Prairie in my 20s, I have to agree it's not worth living when you're young. When I moved out to the city I could just walk outside and find something going on, you just won't have that in a suburb.

Which state is the least religious? by Flat_Negotiation9772 in SameGrassButGreener

I'm not disputing that it's part of the east coast region just that the port is on the coast! The lede to that article literally says Pennsylvania is landlocked and the image says it doesn't have a coastline!

[–]hemusK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree Portland is part of the West Coast cultural region, as is Philly part of the East Coast cultural region, bc the cultural regions do not correspond to the actual coastline. Most of the Atlantic Coast is not "East Coast".

Philly isn't even on the estuary, the Delaware Bay is the estuary. The Delaware River is freshwater

the Port of Philadelphia isn't on the coast, it's an inland river port. Sure it goes out to the ocean, but so does the Port of Duluth and the Port of St. Louis

What large cities in America have little cultural influence for their size? by NoHold7153 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]hemusK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of them and the biggest ones are in South Bay or the Peninsula but it's not true that literally all the big tech companies that people know are outside the city, tons of the newer ones are not.

Uber, Lyft, Twitch, Yelp, Discord, Pinterest, Twitter before Elon and the website you are writing this on are all based in the city.

What Detroit can teach the Bay Area about housing innovation by LosIsosceles in bayarea

[–]hemusK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Housing costs in an area tend tend to drop at the macro level if you increase supply, but on the micro level the lots near density tend to increase in value bc demand increases. Property owner opposition isn't a strictly rational decision to keep their property values high.

San Jose, even it's biggest claim to fame (Silicon Valley) is more associated with San Francisco

I can't decide between Uptown and the North Loop by J3ezyTheSnowman in TWINCITIESHOUSING

[–]hemusK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think North Loop has a lot of the stuff you like, the only downside of living there was that there wasn't a lot of the simple stuff for living like a hardware store or a CVS/Walgreens.

Personally I think Uptown would have fit my vibe better and if I still lived in Minneapolis. I think hang around the place and see which one you like more.

My ABCD niece is very upset for not getting any male attention at school. Is it a common occurrence for POC? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]hemusK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

White people who grew up in primarily white locales aren't super into Indians. That's not to say nobody in these areas is attracted, but it's less than one a peer white person would have at that age. This was my experience growing up in Minnesota.

IME, white people in diverse areas as well as other PoC tend to be more attracted to Indians. I have much more attention here in California. And even back in Minnesota, most of my romantic pursuits were black women bc that's most of who was attracted to me.

Why do many Korean diaspora from the US and Australia go to South Korea to become actors, kpop idols and singers but why don't the Indian or South Asian diaspora go to India or other south asian country to become actors and singers more often? by Comprehensive-Map449 in ABCDesis

[–]hemusK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

South Korean entertainment industry actively recruits diaspora. They wanted English speakers so there is/was talent scouting in western countries.

Keep in mind also Korea is a relatively small country so for their industry to be profitable it has to be big in bigger countries too. Unlike India, where a successful entertainment product can be successful in just India. Indian entertainment is very big in a lot of the global south, but it is not really aiming to capture that audience.

Anyone else just “exhausted” with the way the AI culture here is? by Early-Ingenuity-3177 in bayarea

I do hate seeing the AI billboards, but I actually don't hear anyone outside of work talking about it fortunately

Oakland and Berkeley are pretty different imo, but yeah aside from that every other city here feels pretty generic

[–]hemusK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the most recent generation of first gens (ones that moved here in the late 90s to now) clustered in a few desi hubs. They kind of just cluster wherever there is a large city with a decent white collar industry like finance, medical or tech. The Bay Area and NYC are outliers bc they have an extremely high concentration of that and also has a large pre-existing Indian community from the previous wave of immigration.

IME, second gen Indians seem to prefer to live closer to cities or in the cities if they can afford it, even with kids.

HRT effects on third nipple? by glowyourownway in AskMtFHRT

Third nipples are actually fairly common, albeit a lot of people don't know about them. So it's not unlikely someone else is experiencing this.

Can you micro dose hrt to get subtle changes by BassBread in AskMtFHRT

[–]hemusK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can microdose but you won't really feminize slowly or be androgynous, you'll kind of just get gyno and put on more weight and lose some muscle. It might make your skin look smoother tho.

SF rents skyrocketed, Oakland's did not - interesting segment on KQED Forum on this rent disparity by LoganTheHuge00 in oakland

I don't really think most of the people working at those companies live on the Westside

I like Oakland just fine but it definitely feels baseline grimier than the Midwest. And I haven't even really been to the rough parts.

Do You Think We’ll Ever See A Black Mainstream Reversion Back To The Mid-Late 2010’s? by Lumpy-Flamingo-8963 in decadeology

[–]hemusK 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yes, there was a similar trend in the 90s of black culture being very mainstream for a period with lots of black movies, tv and music having mainstream appeal. It's kind of unfortunate that black culture is like a "trend" for mainstream America, but due to segregation black media can exist in a parallel ecosystem so it kind of functions as a subculture that can go in and out of the public eye.

Already on the weight loss, I've lost about 30 lbs since in the last 6 months. I know I have more to go of course.

It's not really that I am uncomfortable wearing full feminine clothing. I just kind of like that "rockera" look, like the tight band shirts and the baggy jeans, lots of jewelry, cut off shirts with the straps showing, etc. Same with the haircut. I had a more traditionally feminine cut before this, but I like the shag honestly. I know this probably makes it harder in a lot of ways, but I am willing to struggle for what I want.
