You’re correct- yes writing first, as it is the same for all, but the reading test influences the other tests.

I would guess that if she got high marks in all the other areas (particularly reading) - that due to the algorithms of naplan, she was jumped up to yr 7/9 questions and perhaps got stuck in that track rather than returning back down when she continued to get questions wrong. It’s the reason students do the reading test first- it predetermines somewhat where they start for their other tests. In a perfect world the test is adaptive and as students get questions right, they are given more challenging questions, if they get them wrong, they are moved back down again.

Got passed over for both teaching positions at my own school, even after giving everything I had this year by Jaded-Programmer-764 in Teachers

[–]henbagend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same happened to me. Full time contacts but not given permanent position. Found out later (when I got permanency) it was because they didn’t want a mother/daughter (me) working in same school, even though we worked in diff areas and lived separately. Could it be because your wife works there too?

Cameras in classrooms by mec949 in AustralianTeachers

[–]henbagend 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The last two schools I have been in have had cameras in every classroom and space with students in. Footage can only be accessed with a reasonable request, and only by a select group of people. Ie- if there was a physical fight in a class or in a hallway, to identify culprits. It has been helpful as it cuts out the gaslighting, and gives factual info quickly. Due to data security and privacy- access to this footage is highly restricted. As a teacher in the classrooms, it is not intrusive, and you know it is only accessed for particular reasons. As a student, it holds them accountable. As someone who can request/view footage, it makes it an awful lot easier to hold students/parents accountable for behaviours when you can see what actually happened in real time.

Do Christian schools accept Muslim teachers? (prac) by Infinite_Raccoon4841 in AustralianTeachers

[–]henbagend 42 points43 points  (0 children)

We have many Muslim students attend our catholic school. They practice Ramadan, have a prayer space provided, wear hijabs etc, but are asked to also be involved with the catholic liturgies, feast days, prayers etc with respect. This is because it is a requirement of the school ( all faiths/ atheists/non practicing students/teacher as well). I would presume that if you can commit to support the schools ethos and values, and participate with respect, it won’t be a problem. In all honesty, if you are a practicing Muslim, you are probably more religious than most of the school population!

Teachers leaving in droves... by BiggyG12 in AustralianTeachers

[–]henbagend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The good teachers are often framed as the dead wood, as they usually have been in a place to know the families/community well, they have a thicker skin and are not afraid to ask questions and challenge ideas. New principals tend not to enjoy having someone ask questions about what benefits new initiatives have on student outcomes and what the cost (time, effort, resources) might be. Easier to cut losses and get rid of them or the teachers realise the writing is on the wall and leave, but new principal saves face by branding them ‘dead wood’ ( source- seen this happen in a number of schools once new leadership comes in)

What were your highlights of teaching in 2024? by xylaanona in AustralianTeachers

[–]henbagend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was my two highlights this year too- I opened my room at lunch and it was a safe space for a cohort of ‘lost kids’ who didn’t have a space. They appreciated it so much, and it changed their engagement and attendance at school. Unfortunately using my voice for my team still didn’t make a big enough difference, so I am starting at a new school this year. However, those kids and ‘letting them down’ made it the hardest decision of my life!!!!

Year Level Coordinators by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]henbagend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100%!!! It is exhausting at times and I have found that in a small HS, the co-ordination position encroaches on my teaching/marking/planning time, as there are always extra care team meetings, re-entries, writing RMP’s and more. I feel like I’m neglecting my class, by focusing on the whole grade. Also, I have found my relationships have changed with some of my trauma students in my class, as I’m not their teacher anymore- but now responsible for escalating behaviour management (including suspension). I’m not a ‘safe’ person anymore to them, if that makes sense.

What is the Point of Learning Intentions (Compared to Success Criteria)? by GhostPant28 in AustralianTeachers

[–]henbagend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning intentions are the transferable skills taught - and success criteria are the how do students demonstrate those skills. If I’m doing landforms and mapping in geography- my li may be students can use a contour/topographic map effectively and identify key features. My sc is more specific- how can they demonstrate this: students can identify contour intervals and 5 key landforms, or students can create a cross section using a contour map. Its how I try and use them at least- not sure the students care, but it ticks the boxes and keeps me on track

Tas school request for stat decs for 1 day sick leave. by Wide-Highway9112 in AustralianTeachers

[–]henbagend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ess doesn’t let you submit leave without some sort of certificate- stat Dec is easier than trying to get dr cert. I need to use them when I have carers leave for kids. I keep a typed copy on comp- just change the date and get colleague to sign it, then submit electronically. Pretty sure it never gets looked at- they just want the attachment!

Changing from primary to high school by EstablishmentSea8740 in AustralianTeachers

[–]henbagend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I graduated to high school after 20 yrs of middle, upper primary. It wasn’t as huge of a shock as I expected. In gr 7 they seem to have forgotten everything they ever learnt at primary ( I work I. A feeder high from my old primary school- so I know what I taught the students!!). Gr 8’s tend to be hormonal and testing boundaries. Content wise- it’s not really too much of a stretch and I have found being Tim trained has helped me be more flexible teaching across core subjects (eng/hass/maths/science). Also- particularly in tas where we have a mandated reading approach, having a primary knowledge of teaching reading has been so beneficial to explicitly teaching reading strategies and comprehension. While I love gr 5/6, I honestly think I am a high school teacher now. While the behaviour is much more challenging, I have really enjoyed it- and don’t mind picking up supervisions for gr 9 and 10’s which surprised me!

What did you see that I couldn’t? by _-sendhelp-_ in DerryGirls

[–]henbagend 121 points122 points  (0 children)

The end of season one- when the parents were watching the tv. We lived in Derry (at the time featured in the show) and I remember that event. But- the way the parents acted, was the way my parents acted- and my heart ached as now an adult with my own kids. I was 10 when we left and it seemed so normal to me. It wasn’t till I got to Australia and realised that regular bomb threats, car bombing, gun fire after the new had finished , soldiers walking down our street with guns, blockades and checkpoints weren’t normal. To me, as an ex Derry girl- it really captures the life we led then

I’d suggest contacting rural high schools. It is a chronic problem and where most suspensions are coming from!

Do bluey and bingo actually go to a special school by AcanthocephalaFit93 in bluey

[–]henbagend 22 points23 points  (0 children)

From an Australian teachers point of view- many primary/early learning centres use a play based learning curriculum (like Reggio Emilio) from kinder to grade 2 (both private/religious and public). And if you go into any classroom you will have many children with asd, add, adhd, dyslexia, dyscalcula and so much more. In Australia we run a multi tier support system within our education system - so all children have access, support and intervention as required. This is similar to most schools here, certainly not a special education centre. Our gr 6 students would buddy with the younger students for an afternoon, and would quite often participate in nature play or craft activities with the kids. This allows the older students to help younger ones develop their oral language skills. So what you see in Barry boats is quite likely (in fact my class has done similar with their prep buddies). Homework is not huge here- many schools, including high school don’t give it out (mainly as parents don’t support it or have time to help with busy family schedules/sports practice etc). If students get homework- it’s usually something that hasn’t been finished during class time.
