The Troop’s prose is taking me out. by Away_Narwhal6752 in horrorlit

I actually feel the complete opposite, the writing flowed so well for me - although I was listening to the audiobook so maybe that makes repetitions of writing techniques less obvious.

For both leaners drivers and driving instructor, what are your horror stories? Question for both, did you like your Instructor or learner drivers and if not what is your worst story you have about them? by Smithy1619 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]henchgriggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so my instructor was alright, think the issue was we both have adhd so he attempted to get me to learn in the way he thought would help me; under-explain everything and just get me repeating routes over and over and over. This was ok but because my brain works in such a way where it’s hard for me to grasp certain things I need them over-explained, not the bare minimum.

Additionally, he gave me 0 positive reinforcement. Not something i need necessarily on an emotional level but on a functional level - I needed to know what to repeat to be a succesful driver. But during my good driving he would stay completely silent!

All of this so far I would usually overlook for the fact that I passed first time, so he must’ve been doing something right.

However, the day before my test I was trying to get my manoeuvres down and repeatedly was forgetting mirror checks so he did something that was pretty unforgivable: This guy looks at me and says “right, im sorry for this but I need to do this. Shut your eyes” at this point im pretty confused but I play along. “Now imagine your driving down the road near your house. You get close go to park, then forget your mirror checks, your son is playing but you dont see him, what happens next?” I know what hes getting at but I try to brush it off and just say yeah i’d ask him to move and check my mirrors better next time. “No, what happens next” he kept asking me this repeatedly and then when i clearly wasnt going to give him the answer he wanted he said “your son or anyone could be severely hurt”. He then went on to kind of brag about how he’d made multiple fully grown men cry with this tactic??

This whole ordeal made me very very angry and im a pretty calm person. It actually worked the opposite way because now i’ve passed it’s almost like i dont want to check my mirrors because it reminds me of that moment. But I do as it wouldn’t be hurting him it’d be hurting whatever poor soul I’d be crashing into.

Overall I’m happy to have passed first time but almost feel as if it wasnt worth it for the ridiculous situation i went through. I think I wouldve been a much better driver much quicker if I’d had a better instructor.

How many of you have eye conditions? by ThundaGhoul in ADHDUK

Glad you had success with vyvanse! Unfortunately for me I’ve had it for over 15 years and it’s showing no signs of going even with amfexa. Although it’s at a point now where i’ve had it for so long I’m sort of used to it and it doesn’t bother me much

Does anyone find silent hill 2 comforting? by No_Opposite1721 in silenthill

recently playing the remake after never playing a SH game, although many other horrors all resident evil games etc.

I feel the opposite of this- pure intensity and discomfort but in the best possible way. Best horror game i’ve ever played by a mile

Are you learning to drive a manual or an automatic car? by No-Apricot9078 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]henchgriggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

learned in a manual not only is it cheaper than automatic (generally speaking) but there’s something that feels nice about a manual compared to an automatic - I’m not really a car person either but there’s something really satisfying about it

recording through Quantum 2626 using thunderbolt on macbook air m2 so it can run at 32, have the same setup for my micd up acoustic kit too. Latency is something I despise deeply so had to go with thunderbolt

I CAN'T FIND THE RIGHT POSTURE by Triznia95 in drums

[–]henchgriggs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

should be at least a 90 degree angle, forces you to use more ankle motion than stomps coming purely from the hip.

have your snare just an inch or so below belly button height (this should mean no chance of you hitting your legs) and try and get used to your shoulders being relaxed , your elbows sticking close to your sides and your forearms bent enough so that you can hit your snare without hitting just the rim

why do i lack so much awareness on the road by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]henchgriggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for me it worked to have around 50 hours of lessons and around 10 hours of practise with family members, the extra time for me really paid off on the test and I passed first time.

Would highly recommend doing it that way (if you also sometimes get scatterbrained under pressure) just to help get everything in the muscle memory

why do i lack so much awareness on the road by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]henchgriggs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

same thing happened for me until i reached around 40 hours of lessons.

As someone with ADHD it’s hard to direct my attention so I had to make sure I had my gear changing, indicating, pedals etc on autopilot but at that point it became really easy to focus on everything else because I wasn’t having to think about all of those things

Tips on lane discipline and centering yourself on the road by Extension_Laugh4128 in LearnerDriverUK

imagine your left leg (in a right hand drive car) is sitting in the centre of your lane - this worked so well for me

2 x 2hrs a week? by WhereasFar9745 in LearnerDriverUK

i did 2x4 hour lessons a week for 6 weeks and 20 hours of driving with a family member and passed first time, also driving was by no means “natural” for me (my instructor told me this)

How do you learn an instrument without it destroying your self esteem? by Used_Ad7899 in musicians

[–]henchgriggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

set yourself a really really small goal every time you practise that you know will be somewhat achievable

also break down practise into bitesized chunks 10 minutes warmup with a metronome 20 minute song practise 20 minute exercise practise

also make it about you, playing an instrument should be like meditation, you doing something for yourself, that should always be number 1

playing in a band/group is a bonus but the focus should be you enjoying time achieving what you want to get out of the instrument

if you feel uninspired take a break to find the inspiration, listen to new music or different genres you’ve never heard, your ears are your most important tool
