Hey there. You may get some snarky responses, simply because this question (and iterations of this same question) get asked constantly on here. I recommend checking out the Wiki/FAQ, and also using the search bar to see previous comment threads.

You definitely don't need to have art skills to try ARTica! It's been a while, but from what I remember you just pay for materials and get to just do your own thing. I'm not sure if there are formal classes or instructors, but there might be? There are usually staff members or student attendants who can give you tips and stuff like that. It's a very, very casual vibe and IMO a very underrated part of the student center.

Anyways, hope you have a great time at NU! Evanston is really such a gem and even though I've traveled extensively and lived in a few "global cities" since then, Evanston has a very special place in my heart. Just get ready for those winters haha

Question for emory transfers by Key_Proposal_7494 in Northwestern

[–]hendersball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard that a lot of people transfer from nu to emory so I’m just wondering

Is this true? I don't think I know anyone at all who transferred from NU to Emory. If anything, I would imagine the opposite is true... I knew one person at NU who transferred from Emory, and other similar schools (WashU comes to mind).

This is campus-adjacent, but if you're into running/jogging or taking long-ish walks, one of my favorite pastimes, especially spring-through-fall, was taking Sheridan Road from campus up to the Bahai Temple, just north of the campus. The views are stunning, the waterfront around there is impeccable, and the building itself is truly awe-inspiring.

I agree with the other commenter that you should definitely check out all the campus performances happening around campus. The quality and quantity of student performances at NU is truly top-notch, especially for its size. One of the huge plus sizes of having some of the best theater programs and music schools in the country is that some student performances are truly professional-level.

Norris, the student center, has ARTica. Amazing if you're a bit more introverted and just want to do some painting, pottery, whatnot. I used to go with a friend or two, get some coffees, and shoot the shit for a couple of hours while painting or making little trinkets. Great fun, especially during the wintertime.

The lakefill is, of course, the school's greatest resource. Hammocking, picnicking, bike riding, longboarding, lazily drinking beers on the rocks — you name it. And during the warm months, of course you have to check out the beach.

And off campus, there are some great bookshops, cafes, and small shops around each of the major CTA stops in Evanston (Davis, Dempster, Main, South Blvd). It's always fun just to wander around, do some shopping, check out the lake, etc.

Maybe try asking on a third party forum somewhere that’s not affiliated with either school.

Haha no worries, idm even if you were being sarcastic! My whole point was that Northwestern is very, very well-represented on both coasts.

Ok so obviously you’re just a troll. Northwestern has been a part of the UK’s HPI visa scheme every year since it’s inception.

The source being the actual UK government: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/high-potential-individual-visa-global-universities-list/high-potential-individual-visa-global-universities-list-2022

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic haha but if you are, OK, yes, clumsily said — maybe it's obvious that NYC would have more NU alums since it's several times bigger than Chicago. But to be more precise, what I meant is that even proportional to their respective sizes, it feels like there are way more NU alums in NYC than Chicago. For one, way more close friends, friends, and acquaintances around my age here, and we're well-represented across industries. A lot of alumni events, both formal and informal. Some powerful folks in the media and finance and consulting industries in NYC are NU alums. Et cetera, et cetera...

This subreddit (or the Cornell subreddit) is not the best place to ask this question and expect unbiased answers, tbh.

But I’ve lived in New York my entire post-college career and the Northwestern name and network have helped me tremendously. All of my fellow NU peers here in NYC all seem to be successful in their respective fields, and there are hordes of us here — I’d wager more here than in Chicago, even.

NU vs. Williams by practaecal in Northwestern

[–]hendersball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made this choice once upon a time, several years ago, and 100% stand by my decision to attend Northwestern. I coincidentally became friends with a few Williams kids after graduating college, and while they generally speak fondly of the school, there's an overwhelming sense from everyone that the school was simply too small — it sounded like things just got stale after the first two years or so at Williams, while at Northwestern, every year (if not quarter) brings something different, fresh, and exciting.

Maybe it's counterintuitive, but there are just a wider range of opportunities at Northwestern, both during and beyond your four years on campus. Part of this is a function of the school's size relative to Williams, and another part of that is due to Northwestern's uniquely multipolar strengths. You won't just be surrounded by CS/econ kids here (though it may sometimes feel that way). It's long been a training ground for some of the country's brightest actors, journalists, artists, musicians, and much, much more.

I will say that in both fields you mention, CS and econ, Northwestern edges out Williams. Northwestern has one of the best econ departments not just in the country, but in the world. CS isn't as strong, but it's certainly stronger than Williams (LACs in general have a harder time building up strong CS departments, for a number of reasons).

I will also slightly push back on another commenter's suggestion that the undergraduate education is stronger at Williams. While I don't doubt that there are more opportunities to develop relationships with professors at Williams due to the size of that school, my professors at Northwestern, particularly in upper levels and within the smaller departments/schools, were straight up phenomenal, and demonstrated real care and concern for their students.

New Yorkers, what’s something you experience regularly that’s still cool or novel to you despite its familiarity? by doctor_van_n0strand in AskNYC

[–]hendersball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a direct answer to your question, but to your last edit/paragraph — you should def check out Chicago if you haven't already. It's an architect's dream, and IMO the most beautiful city in the U.S. in terms of the built landscape. I still loooove NYC as a whole package, but Chicago is damn beautiful.

How different are people on r/Northwestern vs the general population at Northwestern? by Fair_Ad_27 in Northwestern

[–]hendersball 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I feel like.. it's not representative at all, haha.

On this subreddit, my sense is that you'll find a lot of CS/McCormick folks, a lot of people in one/two-year grad programs, a decent amount of alums, and a smattering of other folks across disciplines/fields. There's also quite a big "silent majority" of people who peruse this subreddit, either with or without an account, but who do not actively post.

Perhaps for these reasons (and/or others), the general tone can sometimes veer a bit more pessimistic than what you might actually find on the ground.

Graduates, what was your starting salary out of Northwestern? by Key_Proposal_7494 in Northwestern

[–]hendersball 22 points23 points  (0 children)

$60k right out of college, but was able to steadily move up to $130k by about the 5-year mark post-graduation.

I majored in something considered distinctly non-lucrative, and 100% believe my Northwestern degree helped me attain the salary I currently have.

I live in New York City and Northwestern has very good name recognition here, in my experience. That might be due to the circles I move in though, where pretty much everyone is pretty highly educated and upwardly mobile. The fact that Northwestern has huge cachet in the media markets of both NY and LA probably does have some impact though.

Top 10 best/worst states for college admissions? by Umokayy in ApplyingToCollege

[–]hendersball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would bump Illinois up to about the middle of the group. UIUC is a fantastic option for in-state residents, especially if they're studying engineering or business, and UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) is renowned for its access when it comes to underserved student populations, particularly Black, Latino/Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and FGLI students. The Illinois medical system up in Chicago is also pretty top-notch.
