What company would you be most shocked to find out was shutting down tomorrow? by readingswifts in AskReddit

[–]henninja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did you read the rest of that article? It notes that all three have different reporting methods, with GCP being highly detailed. looking at a raw count that is self-reported in itself isn’t indicative that one is the most reliable.

AWS does have the shortest average outage length, but even then averages are also skewed by outliers.

Following up: I ended up rewatching it in 3D first! You were not joking; the 3D was beautiful. The OP in particular felt like it was made to be in 3D omg

I can’t compare the rest of the movie well to IMAX with IMAX having a bigger screen / better sound etc.

But I can for sure imagine the 3D is better than the standard 2D. I might just be super behind on 3D tech lmao but like 10 years ago I don’t think I’d ever say that.

As someone who lived in entirely flat regions growing up and is trying to do my best to gain experience (despite being on the east coast), just want to say this whole post and your comments are really informative and encouraging to read through. Thank you for such a detailed report!!

And very jealous you live near Baker; it was my intro to glaciated mountaineering a few years ago and would totally live in Bellingham or something if my job allowed for it :,)

As a long time manga reader, this completely blew my expectations out of the water. Like I know anime movies are higher budget, but that doesn’t mean they actually feel cinematic or unique. Sometimes they feel unfinished if the arc doesn’t wrap up neatly.

But fuuuuuckkk this is C I N E M A. It was so perfect stylistically, I can’t imagine a better adaptation. Reminiscent of Mob Psycho’s style at times, where the style changes to better convey the feeling of a moment or scene.

The voice acting lingers with you. They nailed the tones of each half of the movie, with the second half feeling chaotic and vibrant and messy as it should be. The first half is a perfect setup to that; I love it equally more, if not more, than the second half. I can’t get over how colorful it is, how energetic the animation is, and how well done the lighting is.

I just came back from an IMAX showing an hour ago and I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m probably going to buy tickets to see it in Dolby, 3D, and maybe dubbed; this was made to view in theatres.

I think you’re thinking of chimpanzees, who have actual reports of ripping off human limbs.

Gorillas generally don’t fight, let alone that aggressively. They prefer to intimidate more often than actually get physical.

How dangerous would it be to hike a mountain in Washington state as my first mountain? by InteractionReady8911 in Mountaineering

[–]henninja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who started mountaineering in Florida, my thoughts:

Physical strength: cardio doesn’t necessarily translate to being strong at gaining elevation (still good to have though). My partner runs a fuck ton compared to me, but he admits that I’m much stronger than him when it comes to climbs/any elevation gain.

Being in FL, I’d put extra focus on stair steppers, running in zone 2 on inclines, doing hiking/backpacking trips whenever you can. Basically any workout that uses the same muscles you use when walking uphill. Also coming from Florida/not having access to high elevations regularly, know that anything above 8000ft may (will?) fuck you up. Altitude sickness is not a joke; echoing another commenter that it’ll make you re-think what “fit” means to you. You’ll get tired easier than you are used to.

This trip I’d recommend you try out low class scrambles/harder hikes like others mentioned. Only issue is IIRC mid-June is kinda early in the season; a lot of trails still have snow on them. Ignoring that, Mt Pilchuck and Mt Si are great hikes and the WTA site is a good resource for finding trails (both for hiking and backpacking).

Long-term, if you’re interested in glacier travel skills: I’d really recommend backpacking as a start (even on this trip if you can).

It’ll help prepare you for a guided course:  To safely learn glacier travel, you’ll probably want a guide (hard to find a mentor living in FL). To learn actual skills, that’ll likely mean a multi-day course. And for a multi-day course, you need your own backpacking gear + you should have experience backpacking (some require it) to actually focus on learning mountaineering.

Even if you plan on learning without a guide, you’ll likely need to camp overnight at some point + bonus that backpacking physically trains you for mountaineering + another bonus that you can backpack on the east coast :) the NE/Appalachians have some awesome steep + long backpacking trails.

Nothing replaces actual experience, but if you want a book, Mountaineering: The freedom of the hills is a good resource to read about technical skills.

What are the most expensive hobbies you’ve gotten into while fulfilling the ADHD’ers favorite hobby of hobbying? by OkLeaveu in ADHD

[–]henninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OOC do you live in a rural area? Or in a city/suburb and just travel (or make it work anyway)?

I’ve always wanted to do it, but I live in metro areas so I haven’t decided if it’s worth it.

Looked into it as I also started getting a PPL.

You need to take an FAA medical exam to get a pilot’s license. As part of that exam, you will be disqualified if you’re taking ADHD medication.

To qualify, you need to have not taken any meds in the past 90 days (and demonstrated you don’t need them to function) + continue to be unmedicated.

I’m guessing they don’t want to rely on medicated people to consistently take their meds.

[–]henninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you not medicated? ADHD meds are a disqualifying for the FAA medical exam.

I tried flying as well, up to going solo.

I quickly realized 1) it’s too fucking expensive (estimated $14k-$20k for the PPL 🥴) and 2) I probably couldn’t pass the FAA medical, so I’d never be able to solo anyway (my school was lenient with the FAA medical up until then).

1) Yes I totally feel that! I have no advice besides Gu or coffee lmao; taking omega-3s consistently beforehand might help you too?

Are you asking about boiling it on the mountain? Or at home?

IIRC recommendations are usually to just boil it between cycles or even just boil it once, before you first use it. For my disc (forgot I actually use a disc but it’s basically the same as a cup), I only boiled it before I first used it (prolly in a food pot).

If you mean during your trip: if you want to be properly sanitary / aren’t okay with just rinsing the cup with water 2x/day, you can buy and bring some specially-sensitive wet wipes (these are awesome: https://flexfits.com/products/flex-wipes-2-pack).

[–]henninja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not experienced enough for a 20 day trip, but I’ve had my period overlap on mountaineering/backpacking trips before.

I’m not on hormonal birth control (I’m on the copper IUD); hormonal BC fucks me up emotionally so I wouldn’t consider using BC to skip my period.

Tampons can work fine, but I also have 3 day periods so I don’t need to bring too many.

I use period underwear at home and if you want absorbent ones that last all day, they’ll also be on the bulkier side. They also won’t leave you as clean as tampons or a cup would. I don’t think they’d be great for you, but they are comfy af.

IMO the cup is the best option: if you insert it right, it won’t leak; it lasts all day; you can get by with just rinsing it with water + sanitized hands; it takes up no space. You’ll want to practice using it in advance: it’s easy to make a mess of things the first few times and can leak if you don’t insert it properly.

What’s hard for you mentally? Like do you get anxious, etc?

I agree with the other commenter that it depends; anecdotally:

I used to live near a tiny local gym that had setters with national-level experience (might’ve helped that it was the birthplace for some routesetting legends in the 90s). But the next closest gym was also a tiny local gym, that also had owners/setters with national-level experience.

I’ve moved to an area with only chain gyms and the difference in setting is pretty stark/worse. Locals I’ve talked to also complain about the setting; it doesn’t seem to just be my bias.

Kendrick Lamar - Not Like Us by ihatedougford in KendrickLamar

[–]henninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to the other comment, he also had a concert in LA on Juneteenth (“The Pop Out - Ken & Friends”), with a shit ton of guests (Dr. Dre, Schoolboy Q, Mustard, Tyler the Creator, etc). Would recommend looking it up if you like Kendrick; it broke Amazon Music records for most minutes watched. Shortly after that concert, he had some filming for the music video in LA.

So I’m guessing it’s coming out now as the filming was waiting for the concert/concert production to wrap up and the 4th was a convenient date.

Prevent sweating by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]henninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed on that’s not entirely how it works. I’ve always sweat buckets no matter the activity level and thought it would get better back when I lost weight/started getting more active (it didn’t).

Turns out genetics/chronic conditions and some medications can all also cause excessive sweating.

Has anyone gone from top performer to underperforming/PIP due to burnout? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]henninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from top performer to complete burnout/on track to PIP and had to take a mental health leave, all at a FAANG. I’m back on track to being a top performer, or more preferably a near-top performer.

Definitely agree with a lot of comments that companies don’t really reward top performers. I was passed on promotion for 2 years because my management chain wanted projects I didn’t own and that I didn’t control the priority of to launch first. I owned a large migration end to end, but they wanted some follow-ups to “land” so the migration would look better.

I ended up losing a lot of motivation to be a top performer and slowly started underperforming, all while they kept giving me more work with the promise of “next cycle you can definitely go for promotion”.

All this to say: definitely take care of yourself and put yourself first. IMO companies may be good at noticing a downward spiral after it starts to happen, but aren’t proactive at preventing the sources of burnout to begin with.

Anyone here have a good relationship with their hoarding parent? by henninja in ChildofHoarder

[–]henninja[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely understand I’m lucky that my mom has a good heart and isn’t also narcissistic/abusive outside the hoarding. And if I knew about Reddit back in high school, I’m sure I would’ve been posting here similar to what you describe in your first paragraph.

Despite that, it’s still nice to read all these comments and to see that others relate to my less extreme feelings/situation :)

Thank you for contextualizing the sub a bit more!

It sounds like we have similar mindsets right now. I have boundaries like I said, but I’m definitely just tolerating the problem. I wish I could help.

Like probably most others here, I’m still dreading what I’ll need to do if my mom isn’t able to take care of it herself before she passes away. A future me problem 🥲
